My 1 1/2 yr old daughter is now in this new phase of spitting out her drinks. She fills her mouth up and then just lets it go flowing out of her mouth. She also has a fascination with spitting on the couch and rubbing it in. She is making such a huge mess!! Anyone have any advice? Ive tried a couple of different things, but nothing seems to work!

What can I do next?

My 23 month old daughter does this with her drinks sometimes, as well. I find she does it mostly when she's not really thirsty and so she tries to entertain herself and her twin brother. When I find her spitting out her drink she gets the sippy cup taken away. Then somedays she just continues to spit even though it's just saliva it's still messy, so she gets taken out of the highchair and put in the corner. She really doesn't make the mess out of her chair, but for your daughter you may try allowing her only to have drinks in the highchair until you teach her that spitting her drink is not allowed there either. hope that helps :)

My niece is 2 1/2 and she did this for along time until my brother and his wife refused to let her have any drinks out of the kitchen and as soon as she would spit it out they took it away and said no more. She learned real fast that you dont get juice if you spit it back out.

Hope that helps, i have never had to deal with this first hand so i dont know, our little one will turn one 3 weeks but has Spina bifida and currently has a gtube due to a side effect of a decompression in the back of her head.

Sorry i couldnt be more helpful, but maybe you could try it

In addition to what Heather did we also made a point to not feed the need for negative attention by being as emotionless as possible about this action or any other negative actions.

Here's a site that shows the reasons for negative behavior.

Hi A.,
I dealt with a similar behavior in my daughter who is almost two. The first thing we did was only to let her have drinks in a chair in the dining room. I know it is easier to let them have a sippy cup and run around the house but it was better for my furniture and my sanity to keep food and drinks in the kitchen and dining room. The other thing we did was as soon as she let her drink run out of her mouth, we took that drink away and then IF she was still really thristy then we let her have water only. If they are honestly thristy, they will drink that even though a battle of wills may ensue. Good luck, I know it isn't easy but you can do it!!

Hi A., I know exactly what you are dealing with my 3 year old daughter was doing this for awhile and a little girl i watch is doing this to her mother every night when she goes home.
To solve it every time my daughter would spit the drink out I would take her cup and not give it back for awhile and tell her "no thats nasty and we don't do that with our drinks" and then make her sit in time out, after a couple times she has figured out she isn't gonna be allowed to do this. All I can say is consistency and being in the right place at the right time to catch her doing it. Hope this helps W.
