Hey Moms, i have a dilemma. My daughter (just turned 1) has started to grind her teeth. I don't know what this will do to her teeth in the long run, but i do know that the noise makes me nuts! Obviously now is the time to try and take her binkie away, but since she started grinding her teeth, I find myself giving her the binkie a lot more so that she will stop! What can i do to break her of this before it turns into a bad habit with out having to use her binkie??

What can I do next?

My kids both had this problem. And I did as well when I was younger. Our pediatrician had nothing to say to help us.
I ignored it in both my kids. I never said a word about it to them. And, thankfully, within a few weeks they stopped doing it.

Ask your dentist! I am 43 and I grind my teeth. I did it in high school - went to a boarding school and roomate was bothered - and it began again in my 40's. My dentist gave me a guard which will hopefully help any long term damage. At her age and with the first set of teeth it may be a different story. Check with your dentist.

My daughter grinds her teeth too and I used to also. It is damaging but I have yet to find a way to stop it at such a young age. I wore a mouth guard but that is not appropriate for kids especially at 1. I would ask your child's dentist. Mine had nothing to suggest but perhaps yours will. Good luck.

my son did that a lot while he was teething, but it also stopped from one day to another.

right now, with 24 months, he started again, and his last mollars are coming through.

The noise really is annoying, but I'm sure it won't last forever! And if you give her the pinky for a little while longer, that won't harm..

My daughter occasional continues to grind her teeth and she is now 6 years old. She started at 2 years old. I have noticied that it occurs at certain times such as when she has a sinus/allergy drip, over tired from staying up late the day before or when she has had a very active day. I know what you mean about the grinding. It would drive me up the wall as I am a light sleeper. I would often go to her and prompt her up on her pillow so that her head is higher than her body as it will help when she has a sinus/allergy drip.

She has gone to the dentist for the past three years with no problems. Unfortunately, both the peditrician and dentist stated that she would be okay.

your one year old may be grinding her teeth because she is actually teething right now. my daughter (18 months) always does this when her teeth are shifting or right before new ones pop through. if your baby hasn't gotten her 1 year molars yet, she may be working on them. they were very painful for my daughter and we saw lots of grinding at that time (13 months old). and sucking her binkie seemed to help her alot with that. i'd hold off on eliminating the binkie if she's teething, unless you are nursing, in which case i'd let her continue to nurse on demand. this may help. good luck, and keep an eye out for those molars!

My 19 month old son has been grinding his teeth occassionally also. The sound DOES make me crazy! I think he does it more when new teeth are coming in. I've mentioned this to my Dr. the last 2 visits and she said at this age there is not much to do. There are mouth guards but they aren't appropriate for the age. She also said that if this remains a habit, just to get him in to the dentist sooner.
