My son's 1st birthday is Jan 10th, I make cakes so I'm not sure how to decorate the cake.
I told everyone on the invite to bring their favorite book, from when they were a child. But I don't want to do a book cake. He loves animals but still not sure how to decorate the cake!
I'm kind of stumped and not feeling very creative! Anyone have any suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well I really appreciate everyone's suggestions! I made a Curious George Yellow Hat and also a small monkey "smash" cake just for him! Party is this Saturday and I'm so excited for this mess!
Also I made an elephant cake for my friend's son's 1st birthday (His is a week before my sons). All turned out very well! Thanks again everyone!

Just a thought, but how about a big worm. As in a bookworm! Most little boys love bugs! You could use round cake pans, like three,to form the body.......

What about the monkey from Curious George? That way you get an animal, and a beloved book character in one:) And, there should be tons of fun stuff out there if you use that theme. Have fun ~A.~

I agree with doing the cake with characters from your son's favorite book... or you can have a sugar sheet copy made of the cover, or a favorite page in a book. Wal-Mart can makes these very quickly and inexpensively ($5, I think). All you will need to do it transfer the sugar sheet to the cake and ice around it.

Kim,
My friend at work brought me a 'teddy bear' cake pan. You cook it in the pan and it stands on its butt. SHE decorated it for me, but she only used special icing tips that you can get at the hobby store. It didnt seem that difficult, but i did not try because i was trying to get everything else finished up for the party. Also, there was a smaller version of the cake that i made just for my baby. I gave him his 'bear' and a spork and he went to town.

Try going to Michael's or JoAnn's and purchase an animal shaped cake pan and just follow the directions that come with the pans. They are usually pretty easy. The majority of the time you will use a star tip for decorating.

If the aforementioned stores don't have the animal pan you want, try Cake Carousel they have pans you can rent if you don't want to purchase one, especially if you are just going to use it once.

Since you like to decorate cakes, it might worth the investment to buy a cake pan in the shape of a gingerbread man. It can become many different animals and characters. My mother did this when I was a child, and I got one for my own children. It was often a bunny (cut ears out of a round cake) for my birthday near Easter. At different times, it was a cat, dog, teddy bear, girl, boy, ballerina, Pokemon character, etc., or a cute gingerbread man. Cut the extra pieces out of an extra cake, or use cupcakes (halves make great bear ears).

Here are some ideas:

www.Wilton.com has some great & fairly easy cake ideas. You can get their "character" cake pans at most craft stores.

Cupcakes are really big right now and easy to serve - you could get fun candies to put on the tops of the cupcakes. There are some really fun cupcake decorating books out there right now (I got one for Christmas). Try browsing your local bookstore for ideas.

Finally, I love looking at the user photos at www.cakecentral.com. Whenever I'm stumped for an idea, I like to look here for inspiration. The cakes can be professional, but many are done by people who make cakes as a hobby.
