10-1/2 Month Old Still Won't Wave or Clap

My son is almost 10-and-a-half months old and is very much ahead of the game with his physical milestones such as crawling, walking, standing, etc.

However, I'm concerned about his communication development. Despite trying to teach him for a couple of months, he will NOT wave hello/bye-bye or clap his hands.

Is this anything to be concerned with at this point?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for the replies! Since he's just mastering a new milestone (walking) I ought to give him some time & not put too much on my little man at once. I'll keep working with him and see what develops... thanks again!

I would have to say no, it is not a concern yet. My 2-year old daughter has always been advanced in many area's transitioning to new things with little difficulty. She didn't really want to start waving or saying anything until she got closer to 1. It started snowballing within a few months of her turning 1 and she is now talking all the time, singing many songs including her ABC's.

Have faith and keep working with him. He will do just fine

Don't worry! He is alright. Waving and clapping can happen anywhere up to 18 months. My little girl didn't clap until she was a little over a year. She's two now and has a four year old vocabulary so I'd give it a little more time. I've taught baby sign language in the past. Get the book Baby Signs. It'll give you great info on language development in infants as well as some great things to try at home to further his development. :)

My 1 yo son is just the opposite- the boy waves, claps, and talks like crazy. He even has 8 words that he uses in the correct context. However, he was a little slower with his mobile skills- rolled over late, never did crawl, didn't become mobile (by scooting) until he was 11 months old. Obviously we were concerned and brought it up with our Parents as Teachers rep. She said that at this age kids are able to give their full attention to one major way of developing. That's why many kids tend to be either super mobile/no talking or highly talkative/little or no movement. She said that at some point after one, our son's brain will get better at handling more than one large task at a time and he will become more mobile, more easily and even more talkative!

Good luck to you! I hope this has helped.

Dont worry! My son is the exact same age and just started clapping about a week ago and only waves every once in a while when I try to get him to. Good luck with Evan and baby #2!!!
