10 Mo Old WANTS FOOD!

OK mommies, I know I'm a mother of four, but I don't remember when and what I introduced as far as food goes. I chalk it up to old age and too many kids causing loss of brain cells! My daughter turns 10 mos. today and no longer wants her formula. Obviously, I realize this isn't an option...I will continue the formula, however, she's noticing when we eat around her and doesn't want the oatmeal mixed with carrots anymore! She loves pretty much all vegetables but hated the Gerber meats. I have yet to try the real thing. When can I start? How about dairies? I just think she's ready for some variety and who can blame her...some of those things (like peaches) won't attract the dog!!! I really haven't found anything that she won't eat except for the meats. I don't want her to be picky so I want to give her all of the healthy options right now while she's open to them. Where do I start? I am running out on my lunch hour to pick up a grinder. I had one with my first son and ground up everything we were eating. He loved it. The twins, however, were so different because they were three months premature so everything was postponed. Any guidance would be so greatly appreciated!

What can I do next?

My daughter went on a baby food strike at 9 months old. She simply would not eat it anymore, so I started giving her real food at that point. Give her whatever you're having, just in very small pieces. Previous posters have mentioned the allergy thing, so I won't get into that, but just let her feed herself and she will LOVE it!

I think the "boooks" say one thing, but you are this kiddos mom! Grind up what can be ground, avoid the no-no food (honey, peanuts, etc..) and feed that kiddo! Feed that baby girl! I try to think of what we would do if we lived in "cave times" hehe...we would not have gerber, we wouls grind up our food and feed the kiddo!
She is tellin u she is ready....let her go to town!
Best wishes to you

I think the only things you have to wait on are the ones that have a high risk of food allergy (dairy, nuts, egg yolks, etc.) For both my kids, I just started mashing up whatever we were eating for them, I didn't use a grinder, I only gave them the soft foods (potatoes, cooked veges, fruits, rice, pasta, etc.) and then started easy meats like ground hamburger once they had a few teeth on top and bottom. just remember to introduce one new food at a time and wait 1-2 weeks in between new foods to wait for an allergic reaction!

I basicly started giving my kids food when they asked for it. All of my kiddos got thier teeth early, so they started eating real food when they were like 8 months old. Just make sure it is in tiny bites and it will be fine. Avoid foods that are highly allergenic (you can find a list on line) and also honey is not allowed. Otherwise, give her whatever she wants.

One of my daughters first full meals was last year at Thanksgiving. You know, turkey, mashed potatoes, greens, yams, etc, etc. She was almost ten months at the time. She, too, never EVER did the whole gerber bit. I'm glad I didnt force it. She is almost two now and eats ANYTHING. She even likes spicy stuff!!! My whole opinion on feeding your child is just that.....feeding YOUR child. Do what your gut tells ya to do!!!

At 10 months, my 3yo goddaughter's favorite breakfast was oatmeal with cornbread and banana and (soy) milk. She still doesn't like meat, and I still laugh at her. Don't force the meats, as they are not easy to digest, anyway. Right now she's figuring out what's good to her, so just let her eat whatever vegetables you guys are eating. For dairy, maybe a little string cheese or cheese on a potato. Give her very little to see how her system accepts it or if she even wants it. Others will pummel me, but I think that no one should drink animal milk once they've finished nursing, unless there's some very specific medical reason. It's just not good for our bodies. Find other sources of calcium.

Hi C.! You really got some great advice on here.....isn't this a great resource?! I too am a mom of 4, ages ranging from 15 to 6, our girl being our last as well! It sounds to me like you are doing a great job keeping up with things.....give yourself more credit and stick to your mommy instincts. I personally think your daughter is telling you she is ready, so introduce her to a little at a time and see how it goes with new foods! Definetely stay away from the no-no's......you know that though and what they are by now. You do what is best for HER. One thing that we did different with the girl, vs the boys, was that we had her on soy milk after she got through nursing and it may just be her, I do not know, but she has not had the upper respiratory problems, allergy issues, or teeth issues that the others have had. Something to think about.
Anyway, would love to talk with you more! :) I think you and your hubby are doing a great job so keep up the great work!

God Bless!

You can do yogurt right now, even though it's dairy. And cheese. My kiddos loved the YoBaby yogurts.
Also, you can give her pretty much anything that you guys are eating except for stuff that's too spicy or runs a risk for choking (ie popcorn, candy) or allergy (peanut butter, egg yolk, nuts, honey).
If you're having chicken, salad and green beans for dinner. She can have chicken (cut into tiny shreds or course), lettuce, cheese, tomatoes - whatever's in the salad so long as it's in tiny pieces and she can pick it up herself. And she can eat the green beans without you needing to have them pureed. This is a great time to get her used to feeding herself. She'll feel more like part of the family if she's sitting in her chair eating what the family is eating when the family is eating it. You can spoon feed her yogurt at other times in the day, but for the dinner meal, really shoot for stuff she can do on her own! :)

My son no longer ate baby food by 10 months, he refused to let me feed him. I gave him everything in small soft pieces, I didn't smash anything. Pasta, cheese, chicken, fruits, and veggies, crackers, yogurt, cereal, toast, ground turkey. Anything I made too, like a casserole, or if we went out to eat whatever we ate too. I have not given him seafood yet (not really sure why) and I avoided things that were too spicy although not spices themselves. I just tried to balance his meals out well, and I limited his juice so that he would eat. I never gave him the meats in the jars either, I tried it like I try everything I give him and it didn't taste anything like food, it was gross.
