According to our pediatrician, kids under the age of 2 will not "overeat" in an unhealthy way if they are allowed to eat at will - meaning, if they act hungry, give them food, because they won't eat too much. :)

However, I'm a big believer in talking to the doctor--that is what they are for and a call doesn't cost anything. :) Our doc gave us a handy 1-sheet thing that talked about feeding toddlers and how much they should eat of the various food types. While they usually mean "1-year" by the term toddler, it can't hurt to have that on hand.

It could be, at that age, that he also wants to have what you're having and is mad when you won't give it to him.

At his age he's not eating too much. He may be having a growth spurt right now. As long as you're not pushing food on him, he'll eat until he's full and stop.

Sounds normal to me, but you can always double check with your pediatrician. At this age babies and kids tend to be "grazers" and some say that is healthier for them. They also really can't eat more than their tummies can hold so I would just make sure that whatever he is eating is healthy (no processed sugary salty snacky junk). Like another person mentioned, he could be going through a growth spurt. I also noticed you had posted about him walking already and that is going to burn more energy - therefore he may be hungrier.

My daughter is 3 and still has some "toddler tummy" - I asked her pediatrician about it and she said that was fine. She's lean everywhere else, and is normal weight, height, and body mass index for a girl her age.

My daughter is 11 months old and she is the same way. Instead of letting everyone feed her when they have food, we schedule our meals and her feedings at the same time. Usually, if we happen to be eating and she wants some, we will give her a few cereal puffs to eat. Usually by the time we are done, she is done as well. I am anxious to talk with my pediatrician next week about the right way to handle this. I am always concerned that she will overeat. She has never turned away any food. She likes everything! She is 18 lbs and 1 week from her first birthday. She is in the 97th percentile for height, so she is relatively thin for those 18 lbs.

1) Is he like this all the time, or only now? - it could be due to a growth spurt.

2) Is he, still breastfeeding or taking Formula (if that is what you are doing)??? For the 1st year of life, Breastmilk or Formula, is a baby's PRIMARY source of nutrition.... NOT solids and NOT other liquids. And to nurse ON-demand, 24/7. I would not give him so much juice or water...

3) Is he, or his weight, a "problem" per the Pediatrician or not??? Has the Pediatrician said his weight/growth is too much? If not... then do NOT worry about it. LOTS of babies tummy's, stick out when full...

Do not feel worried if the Pediatrician is not worried.

My concern is.. that your baby only has some bottles..... and is ONLY eating solids????

4) But, he is also at an age where he is starting to 'self-feed' himself and seems real enthusiastic about it...

all the best,
Susan
