Up until about 2 weeks ago my son was an average eater but now he will hardly eat. He even refuses his favorites. I am at my wits end! He throws a fit and will gag when he doesn't want something in his mouth. The thing that worries me is the gagging because sometimes he will make himself throw up. Now this is not to say he won't give in sometimes and allow himself to be fed I always make sure he has finger foods to feed himself but if we don't spoon feed him as well he doesn't eat enough and is hungry in an hour. I am afraid when he goes back to daycare next week they won't be so patent. Just a little info... he does have food alergies and reflux but I cook for him and everything is whole foods and wheat and milk free and he takes meds for the reflux. i feel like a bad mommy..I can't help him, please help me.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I called his Dr and he said to give it some time so that's what we are doing. He is eating a little better now. it turned out he also had a slight ear infection so we are hoping when he comes off the antibiotic he will do even better. Our only challenge now is to get him to eat more finger food. Thank you everyone for your help. N.

Mine did the same thing, I found if i just left them with their food they would eat. It's an independent thing. That and mine grew around 8/9 months then stopped at 10 so maybe he just doesn't need that much food at that age.

When my son was about 9 1/2 months he sort of did the same thing with his formula, his doctor suggested we try him on whole milk which worked wonders. Maybe he is ready for a change... good luck!

contact his doctor and tell them what is going on. doctor can help. My kids do that becouse there done growing for a short time. when the start growing they start eating agian. you are doing the right thing putting out finger foods and your not a bad mom it can some times feel like that. Just be persistant let him have a good variety of foods like grapes and other things he likes. try pediasure for extra vitamens. Hope this helps.

I would call his doctor. A friend of mine had a similar issue with her daughter about the same age and it turned out her gag reflex was at the front of her mouth instead of the back, so anything with texture would make her gag when she tried to eat it.

All of my kids did this (I have 3). They would go thru periods where they ate like pigs, and periods where they wouldn't eat anything. Grandma would always FREAK when they wouldn't eat, but I just waited for them to get ready to eat again, and they always did. My 4 year old just went thru a non-eating spurt, and it actually scared me this time, cuz it was for like 2 weeks. But now he's eating again. Just don't make the mistake I did, don't give him junk just to make him eat. It was a mistake that I'm having a hard time correcting now. I remember my 7 year old hardly eating at all when he was younger, but he out-eats my 13 year old now. My sister has never had this problem with her kids, she feeds her kids ALL DAY, and while Grandma thinks she's the better parent for it, 2 of her kids already have serious weight issues as a result. He'll eat when he's ready. Just keep putting it in front of him. I have noticed, though, that if I try and demand that my 4 yr old eat it makes him very mad, and causes him to not eat even longer. Good luck!

Hi I'm a grandmother of 5. Check his teeth, a friend was having this problem and the child's teeth had no enamel. At 10months both my kids were feeding themselves, so were the grandkids. Maybe he just wants to feed himself.

Take him to the doctor. Has he had his throat checked lately? My son just got out of the hospital. (He's 18 mths) I took him to the doctor and turned out he had ulcers all over his throat and tonsils. Doctor said that is why he wasnt eating. Could also have a soar throat, could be his reflux. I wouldnt guess that it is just a phase. I think that something is causing him to not even want to try to eat. He knows it'll hurt or upset his stomach. I'd take him in ASAP. Especially since he isnt eating. Good Luck....T.

Some times my daughter eats like no other, and there are times when I cant get her to eat.
They say that its pretty normal. Some say that its just part of there growth spurt. However in your case it could be different. I think you should talk to his pedi especially if he has issues with his reflux. Lets hope that its just normal behavior and nothing else. Your concern for your baby shows that you are a great mother. Oh and about the daycare. All you have to do is make them aware of the situation. If its a good daycare they will be understanding and will work with him.
I hope the best for your baby.

I can just tell you what happened when my now 16 month old was about 9 months. It turned out she was getting a tooth and didn't want to eat. All she wanted to do was drink. She had already gotten a couple of teeth, but my pedi said they can act different each time. The reason why she wanted to drink so much was because the cold felt good in her mouth. I don't know if this helps or not, but that might be it! Good Luck!

Kids go through so many phases with eating. All three of mine stopped eating for awhile coincidentally when they started walking!! Doctor said it was just a phase and all of them grew out of it quickly!

I agree with getting him to the doctor! If he is refusing his favorites it sounds like something is going on. If the doctor gives the all clear, though, then I'd say relax. Keep offering only those good foods you are, but let him choose when to eat and not. You are not a bad mommy when he chooses not to eat - Obesity is such a huge problem in America, so remember he has his own metabolism and by respecting it you are teaching him to respect it and not go beyond what he needs. You sound like a great mommy to me!!
