I've been noticing my son has some not pleasant baby's breath. I've started using the baby orajel toothpaste, but is there something else I should use or would work better? I have only used it once so I'm not sure how well it's working. Please help! He likes to sleep right up next to me and breath in my face. . ugh!
He does indeed use a paci and he just randomly started using one (we think it's because he saw the other kids at daycare). That does explain the sudden breath change.

What can I do next?

Does he have a pacifier? That locks in the odor from druel. I use the orajel every night and morning on my 23 month old because of the bad breath. Just brush before bed and when he wakes up. There's nothing else you can give him. he's too small.

He may be teething or comming down with an infection, that is what usually causes bad breath in younger kids. Also check for white spots on his gums and mouth he may have thrush, a fungal infection in the mouth that can easily be taken care of with medication or go away on it's own in two to three weeks. A paci would not cause bad breath unless it spread some sort of infection.

You are smart to look for other causes. Almost always bad breath is either sickness or something happening with digestion, not something happening in the mouth. Hope you're both feeling better soon!

Is he eating solids? It could be food collecting in his tonsils (called tonsil stones). I am not sure if children this young typically get them, but they are normal. You can see by looking with a flashlight at his tonsils- they look like white stones in the crevices of the tonsil. They smell AWFUL!!

My son had bad breath when he had strep throat. That was his only symptom but we took him to the pediatrician and he tested positive for strep.

I found that when my babies had fevers, their breath was awful. Has it been going on for long?

It may be something your baby's eating that isn't working well for him... if you're breastfeeding, I've noticed that things like garlic seem to pass directly to kids and they end up with breath (and sweat) to match mom.

If he's on formula, have you tried a different preparation? There is some variety in ingredients, so it might be the fats or sugars or flavors added to one, but not a different one...
