10 Month Old Started Refusing Baby and Table Food

I have a 10 month old son who used to eat baby food twice a day. Never enthusiastically, but he did ok. He recently started refusing all spoon fed food. we tried giving him table food, and he gags. He never refuses the bottle and chugs his formula like a champ. Is this normal? Has anyone experienced this? Thanks so much for your input!!!

What can I do next?

Hi

My son also wasn't great with solid food when we first tried it. He is now 14 months old and is doing much better...trying different foods. But, he still has his days when he would rather just have more of his milk.

I definitely notice a difference, when he is about to get some teeth as well. He has lots of food aversions for several days, and then a tooth comes through.

Good luck. Just have patience and know that he is just like us...some days he wants everything and other days, he is picky.

L. ~ Just a couple of comments. A child that does not eat, is NOT hungry. ALL kids at times will skip meals or choose not to eat. Keep a healthy eating environment and they will eat when they are ready. <Should not leave a child not eating past three days, time to take them to the doc, if they go over that>
Also, we have found that so many parents go from just cereal to FRUIT. NO, have veggies be your first foods. Once you get through all the veggies <about 8 weeks or so> then add the fruits, one at a time just like you introduced the veggies. You will be AMAZED at how well they will eat and choose to eat their veggies – EVEN into their TEEN years. Limit the bottle as well. If he is taking 8 ounces, down it to 5 or 6 for a day, he will regain his appetite.
Best wishes....

My son just turned 11 months a couple days ago and he is doing the exact same thing. My mom has been pressuring me into putting food in his bottle, but I've read not to do that. I also was told by my pediatrician NOT to give water for any reason. No nutrients and fills the baby up. Try to be patient, right now the only table food he sometimes eats is the yobaby yogurt. I am just trying to give as much formula as possible so his weight doesn't drop, but as for force feeding - don't do it, it will cause problems with eating in the long run. Oh, by the way, the gagging thing, my kid does it when he doesn't like something, he pretends to gag. I'm so on to him now, so just pay attention and get to know all of your baby's reactions, it's a wonder how smart they already are. Good Luck!

I'm in the same boat. My son just turned one and wants nothing to do with any type of food. It's nice to know I'm not the only one going through this. I have no advice but just wanted to let you know youa re not alone.

I think you need to FEED him BEFORE you give him the bottle,
and perhaps give him WATER instead, its thinner and less filling, which will make him hungry sooner, and hopefully stimulate him to eat.

Check his mouth for teeth, this could also be a reason,

and try starting by giving him those little gerber stars, they melt in their mouths and look like cheerios,

OR a Egg Jumbo cookie by stelladoro,
its great for first time eaters,
let him hold it in his hand and chomp away, of course you monitor him the ENTIRE TIME he might choke/gag a bit, thats normal at first, but do this daily till he learns how to do it,

If you wait to long to introduce foods they can develop food aversion, so don't be affraid to help him try new things,

Good luck

Hi L.. I have just been perusing the site looking for people who also have 10 month old children refusing all solids. My daughter also had an issue with gagging on foods with even the slightest texture and I thought it might have been improving, but now she is refusing solids all together so who knows. I am wondering how is going with your son now, a month later, and if you discovered anything helpful to him that you could pass along. thank you, A.

Start adding foods to his formula. I used to give my boy his bottle loaded with cereal and fruits. He loved it. He especially liked having his bottle so he didn't have to "eat" with a spoon or his fingers (he was very lazy!). That was usually his breakfast. You can put pretty much any fruit in his bottle, but I'd stay away from the berries because they tend to be seedy, except for maybe blueberries. And then just add some baby cereal for the grain. Bananas are excellent as well as peaches and pears.

I have a ten month old as well who was doing this and I think it was because he was teething really badly and wanted nothing to do with food, other than nursing. I would talk to your pediatrician. Usually it is fine for them to go on a hunger strike for a while as long as they continue to take liquids (ie; formula or breast milk).

Good luck!
