My 10 month old son has a terrible cold. the doc on thurs. said he has croupe. He has had a fever ever since and is just miserable. we have been giving him tylenol and motrin to keep the fever down.
He's coughing, his eyes are watering, he can't sleep, his nose is running and he's sneezing. Any suggestions on how to cope? I feel like I am getting sick now too.

Now this morning he woke up with eyes both swollen and he is developing a rash on his face! HELP!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I took Logan to the e.r. today because he was just SO miserable. They decided he had a sinus infection and put him on augmentim, steroids and benadryl along with tylenol for fevers. I hope this helps! Thank you everyone for all your responses and advice!

Wow! I my 1year old daughter is having the same problem and I did the exact same thing that u did. Motrin and Tylenol, but she is still sick. I am taking her to the doctor today. I hope your baby gets better. This time of year it seems like everyone is ill. I would advise always have good hand washing and use plenty of Lysol to keep the germ to a minimum. Good Luck and Take Care.

Did they do a chest xray? If not I would request it. Sounds like he could have pneumonia. My daughter was that way and her cough sounded just like croup. Just make sure they ruled that out with a chest xray!

I feel your pain! My twins had the same thing at around 10 months and it was horrible. We weren't getting any sleep either. The only thing we did besides the Tylenol & Motrin was to use a humidifier in their room at night and give them the Little Remedies Little Noses saline drops/spray. We also bathed them every night and used the Johnson's Vapor Bath. It all definitely seemed to help them sleep better, breathe more comfortably, and cough less at night. It'll pass, but I know it doesn't seem like it when you're in the middle of it!

Hi A.,
I do feel for you! The only thing that seemed to work was humidity. I would turn scorching hot water on in the bathroom, let it steam up and then hold my daughter in the bathroom for about 15 minutes. I also had a vaporizer that I put spearmint essential oil into in her room.
Best of luck and well wishes to you and your son!

We had a nasty bout of croupe at 3 months and a minor one at 14 months. Although these aren't a cure-all, I found the following to help for colds and ease the pain (for both the adults and the baby):
* sit with the baby in the bathroom with the hot water running
with a vapor tablet in the bottom of the tub (can be found in the cold/flu section of pharmacy)
* baby bath with J&J eucalyptus vapor
* humidfier
* vapor plug in
* Vick's vapor rub for chest

I would even recommend trying Benadryl vs. Tylenol or ibuprofen if she's not running a fever. The Benadryl will dry her "boogies" up and help alleviate the cough.

With this last bout of croupe, my doctor gave my son a steroid shot which helped tremendously.

Good luck and know that it does eventually pass.
