my son is in 1st grade and his 100th day of school is coming up in a few days and he has to take 100 of something with him. i dont want to be so practical with it, and he says he wants to do something that nobody else would think of..i and obviously want to help him be creative but maybe without spending any money or not spending alot. i believe the idea though is to bring something from home, but its soo very hard to get creative that way, cuz every time i look around the house for something, i think to myself, yeah, someone else is going to do that and he's gonna come home..mom, someone else had that, i told you..or something like that. i appreciate any ideas, thanks so much.

So What Happened?

after my son and i read over all of the ideas, he got very creative and decided he wanted to get a big poster board, and draw a really spooky haunted house on it, and draw and cut out 100 spooky ghosts and goblins. this is going to take some time, but its very inexpensive and i am very proud of his creativity. thank you all so much for your ideas and suggestions, we really appreciated it. and my son isaiah says " i really liked those ideas and i really appreciated it too!!" he's the sweetest thing.thank you all so much, you've been great.

Ah....the 100 day project! When my dtr was in kindergarten we made a sunflower on study cardboard with 10 petals. On each petal we hot glued 10 lemon head candies. It was large and bright! It was an enjoyable project that she still talks about.

I remember the teacher sharing the various projects she had seen over the years. One that stuck with me was a Super Bowl themed football grid using teddy grahams and the like. Good luck!

How about something the teacher could keep and use in the class like 100 pencl erasers, 100 crayons, 100 pieces of some kind of paper (colored, construction), 100 cotton balls.

I worked in K for many years and loved the 100th day celebrations. We always got different items and not many were repeats! I think a very creative idea that would not cost much would be to get a piece of poster board and glue 100 pictures to it. Find pictures of him, the family, etc. and glue them together and call it his 100 memories. I think it would definitely be different and it would be an enjoyable project for you to do without spending a lot of money. You can also frame it later if you want or hang it in his room for him to enjoy later. Good luck with whatever you decide and enjoy all of these fun moments! I

Pennies? Was my first thought...but probably most peoples first thought...Cereal? He probably has about 100 pieces of cereal every morning for breakfast?...Tabs off soda cans? Some schools collect these anyway?...Army men? My son has at least 100 of those:)...Pebbles? Some people have these in their landscaping? Pine needles? We have these all over our yard...Pine Cones? We have these too!

Food would probably be the easiest...and maybe he can munch om it after its over???

Okay, brainstorming it is. What would we have 100 of in the house? Corks, crayons, buttons (ooh, a cool mosaic), rocks, 100 construction paper cutouts that he does), pennies, 100 cutouts of something from magazines, Cheerios, 100 unpopped popcorn kernels and 100 popped kernels (the scientist in me comes out), 100 legos put together to make something of your son's choice.

That's all for now!

My oldest daughter brought 100 little combs that come with every barbie, polly, bratz, etc. dolls that we ever bought. We already had them in a little bin. The other one brought 100 buttons. You could also bring 100 M&M's and share them, or 100 pieces of lego, or 100 puzzle pieces, playing cards (52 per deck I believe, you can take out the jokers), 100 crayons, 100 pieces of his dog's food (or other pet). Since he is a boy and for a laugh he could bring 100 emply toilet paper rolls! or else 100 grubs or worms if he fishes. He could cut out 100 paper shapes of something he loves (boats?) or write his name on 100 index cards. He could write the names of all the kids in his class 4 times and probably get to 100 (or add whatever team he is on). He could make a mobile with 100 stars hanging off of it, or stick 100 stickers or pennies or a paper plate. Stuff like that.

We just had our hundredth day also. We cut up colored straws (the ends actually, because I trim them short to fit better in the boys' smaller cups). It's not terribly exciting but it was kind of neat looking and it fit easily into his baggie.

100 pennies would be fun, but maybe not so original.
OR
100 little pebbles -- fun to collect.
OR
100 acorns (come get them from my yard!, we have millions.)

I think most schools have that project. My daughter did.
For the Teacher, the main thing was that the child did the project themselves or at least was the "lead" in it, with assistance from the Parent, and used things from home. The point being NOT to buy things for it. But lots of kids turned in projects that was obvious the "parent" did it. The Teachers did not like that. They can tell which child did their own project.

How about leaves?
rocks?
nuts?
shells?
cotton balls?
sticks?
stickers?
buttons?
pom poms?
legos?
macaroni or pasta?
Seeds?
pencils?
bottle caps?

Good luck,
Susan

Maybe grass... buy a big sturdy cardboard, draw (let him) a house, sUn, clouds, birds and then have him glue 100 strands of grass to make it look almost 3-D. Or sand (same idea)?

The card board shouldn't be more than a buck and you should have crayons and markers but (if your like me at my house) you'll probably have to spend a couple of dollars on crayons/markers.

Let us know what he decides to do :)

Try 100 pieces of candy or something in a jar, or 100 pieces of macaroni glued to a piece of paper, maybe even shaped like the #100.

I know this is an older post but I wanted to still add some more ideas for the that mother who just can't come up with anything for this exciting, yet annoying day. Don't get me wrong. It's a wonderful to have the kids celebrate and get creative. But, think about it. Coming up with 100 of something to put on a shirt, let alone for 2 kids, boy and girl. And! Possibly have to sew or glue or re-enact plastic surgery to get the items to stay put. So, here I want to list those ideas I came up with walking through the Dollar Tree. Plus, I so badly want to share to save the next mother some mental time.
Puzzle pieces.
Fake dollar bills.
Paper clips
Girl hairpieces-you know all of those that end up on the bedroom floor, in the vacuum, under the couch. I was thinking to use those little itty bitty hairclips that I would be happy together.
Googly eyes-pack of 180.
Permanent markers-the fail safe plan. So many drawing options here.
Band Aids-I was so lucky to find rainbow colored ones and a few superhero characters.
Plus, not only can they do this themselves, but my kids just sat occupied, for at least an hour unwrapping the band aids and had a blast doing the whole thing themselves.
My job is done here! :) Phew.

Have you considered making a long chain out of paperclips? My daughter likes to glue elbow macaroni to construction paper in different designs like flowers. Charts made with beans, yarn, Cheerios, gummy bears, Hershey kisses are also an idea. Good luck and have fun counting!
