My 11 month old son has 8 teeth already 4 top 4 bottom. His molers are coming out now too i think.

He got into the habit of crunching his teeth so bad I shiver each time he does this! I'm scared he is going to chip a tooth before they are even fully grown. He also bites me on the shoulder, my clothes and his blankie. I give him Orajel and Tylenol when he is in pain, but unless he has a teether in his mouth he crunches his teeth when he gets bored or irritated.

Should i take him to a dentist?

What can I do next?

This is pretty normal. I would try not to react when he grinds b.c he will do it more if it gets a rise out of you. I would keep giving teether, wet slightly frozen wash cloth. It is very typical for children to grind their teeth and there isn't much that can be done about it.

My daughter would grind her front teeth together - I was amazed that they never broke. I think that it's pretty normal for kids to grind their teeth when they are new. My daughter still grinds her teeth, but so do I so I can't say much. I think that he'll be OK, it's will become more of a habit than anything.

When my daughter was that age, she would grind her teeth too. Our pedi said not to worry about it and that it was just a phase. Just try not to draw attention to it and he'll quit on his own. If you draw attention to it though, it becomes a game and he'll start thinking about it more too. And probably start doing it more. :)

Good luck!

L.,

I think it is a good idea to take him to a dentist. I would also consider having his hearing checked. Grinding teeth is a sign of hearing loss or inability to hear. It never hurts to be on the safe side!

Thanks,

D.

My daughter went through a time about that same age where she would grind her teeth. The sound killed me! But, I tried my best not to respond at all, because I found the more reaction I made, the more she did it. I didn't scold her for it. Eventually she just stopped and hasn't done it at all since. All her teeth are fine. I think they must just enjoy exploring that new sensation.

The biting I did scold. She would usually bite in playfulness, but I didn't want her biting other kids. My husband and I would tell her no and put her in time out when she did it, and again, she stopped.

Good Morning L., Kids this age it is very normal for them to crunch or grind their teeth. It's something new to them. The biting you can and should stop asap. Say No sternly and remove him from your clothing or shoulder.
He can bite a hole in your clothing or really put a Ouchie on your shoulder or leg. Keep extra teethe rs handy... LOL

A dentist will tell you the same, it's normal and really they won't actually hurt their teeth. Besides that most dentist won't see child under the age of 3, unless it is an emergency situation.

God Bless you, Have a Wonderful Thanksgiving
