My 11 month old has his first cold. He is very congested and seems to have just a touch of a sore throat... what are the best (easy to swallow) foods for my little guy?

What can I do next?

Our pediatrician has always told us not to worry too much about solid foods when the kiddos are sick. Stick with formula, watered down juice and maybe popsicles... just keep him hydrated!

When they are congested, they are so miserable! Steam up that bathroom and get ready to cuddle in there. Definitely elevate his head while he's sleeping and as much as they hate it, get those boogies out!

apple sauce is great. and some soup. stay away from dairy (yougurt, ice cream) as it will make the mucus worse. I would highly recommend a humidifier in his room and "steaming him". Put him in the bathroom while you shower or run the shower. Block the bottom of the door and let it steam up. This will help the mucus flow better. You can also use saline. I wouldn't suck it out, but squirt some in his nose to losen the congestion. Motrin at night may also help make him a bit more comfy if his throat is hurting.

Elevate him a little at night - put some big pillows under the mattress so the mattress is flat but tilted, and his head higher than his feet.

Applesauce, canned fruits, popsicles (for the liquid and cold - see if you can find fruit-based so it's not all sugar), any pureed baby food, Italian ice. Go easy on dairy. Water water water. A little honey in some lukewarm water or weak decaf tea helps soothe the throat. I know there's a one-year milestone for honey but he's 11 months so if he's miserable, the pedi will probably say that milestone is flexible. See if you can make a game out of preparing liquids - we used to have a little "soda fountain" toy that filled up different containers with water or other liquids and it was fun to "choose" to prepare drinks to serve. It's better than nagging someone to drink all the time! Maybe play "restaurant" and be the waitress, having him order food. Or play "grocery store" and "purchase" the appropriate foods. Good luck!

I second the Nosefreda. I give this snot sucker at all the baby showers I go to. Your baby will definitely benefit from this. I use a little bit of salt water as well to loosen things up.

aww, poor guy! Maybe canned fruit/cold...the cold may feel good on his throat and its somewhat of a slippery consistency.

Just try lots of different things...he'll let you know if its too much on his throat.

Most importantly...push the liquids!! And of course lots of snuggles. Hope he feels better soon!
