11 Month Old with Thrush and Diaper Rash

I went to the pediatrician on Friday after my daughter had a stubborn diaper rash for 5 days that I suspected was yeast-related. Before I took her to the doctor, we had been trying Lotrimin AF on the rash which helped some but not enough. The doctor gave us oral nystatin for thrush in her mouth (I hadn't noticed the small white patches on the inside of her cheeks.) He also gave us nystatin ointment for her diaper rash. It isn't helping at all. Her butt looks worse, she doesn't want to eat solid food and gags a lot when I give her foods she normally likes, and now she has a case of nasty diarrhea. Anyway, I am now worried about this diarrhea... I wonder if it is the Nystatin? I can't give her diaper-free time since she walks AND has diarrhea. How am I going to get rid of this??? Currently, I sit her in a shallow bath with a little vinegar added each day, I only use cloth wipes with water, and give her yogurt once a day. Any advice? I am at a loss... oh, also, she is still breastfed 4-5 times a day and I am using the nystatin on my nipples too.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I have stopped using the Nystatin have started giving her acidophilus by breaking open the capsule and feeding her a little powder. We have been eating yogurt and I have been using non-medicated diaper ointment to heal the chaffing and redness because the yeasty bumps have gone away.

Hi I had the diaper rash problem with my son many years ago. I do not know if they still have them, but I used a diaper service. They brought me cloth diapers, delivered once or twice a week. They were specially treated and this was a great help.

Cloth diapers... While they are not the most convenient they will clear up even the worst diaper rashes. Wash them in bleach after every use. Cotton is the most breathable fabric and it is easy on any type of skin. Good luck

K. my daughter just got over a very, very nasty diaper rash that was caused by yeast... It was so bad she wouldn't even pee because it burned so bad...she would let a little leak out and cry and beg me to change her... it was heartbreaking.

Anyway I am not one big on medications and antibiotics so I searched for a natural alternative. After a bit of research I decided to get some colloidal silver from our health food store (The brand that we used was Sovereign Silver) I got a bottle with a dropper and one with a spray top, I sprayed it on her bottom tons of times during the day and gave her 3 droppers full twice a day. 24 hours later she was peeing regular and not complaining about her rash, it was still there but the bumps that looked like they were ready to break open and start bleeding were soo much better.
We continued the Silver for about a week orally and then on her bottom until the rash was totally gone.

Colloidal silver is a natural antibiotic and therefor you need to make sure that your child also takes a good probiotic along with it so she's rebuilding her system as well. We used Udo's new line of probiotics. They have one specifically for yeast issues and I would open the capsule and pour half of the powder in yogurt and feed that to my daughter once a day at night.

I know this is probably different that what you would normally do but it worked wonderfully for my daughter and I was at my wits end since her rash was getting SOOO bad and none of the regular things I normally did for a mild rash were working.

Hope this helps. You can also buy colloidal silver and the probiotics online if you don't have a store that sells them.

Our son experienced similar issues. We gave him probiotics to help him build up his gut flora with friendly bacteria - which naturally helps to get the yeast (candida) under control. He was symptom free, but then when he was 2 years old, we went on the Body Ecology Diet to completely rid the yeast from his body.

Probiotic microbes not only suppress the growth of Candida in the gastrointestinal tract and vagina, but they also inhibit the adherence of Candida to the mucosa. The use of probiotics can help fortify natural resistance of the gut microflora to Candida albicans, particularly if antibiotics are used.

Yogurt is great, but you may need a therapeutic dose of probiotic supplementation. You could ask your pediatrician for a prescription or go to a health food store and try to find a good supplement.

I've used Bio-Kult with my son. Actually, my whole family takes it everyday for a maintenance dose, since it help boost immunity. You can find Bio-Kult here:

Hi K.,

Thrush can be a bugger sometimes. Just be sure you're putting the liquid nystatin on her tongue and gums AFTER a feeding, not before. If given before it can upset the stomach and I'd bet could cause the loose stools. If it continues, you might want to call your Dr's office to see what they'd suggest. Be sure to wash your hands before and after diaper changes, using the restroom, nursing, eating etc. This is to keep it from spreading. Any nipples you're using (i.e. pacifier, bottles) be sure to sterilize for 20 minutes or wash through the dishwasher once a day. Once it's gone, throw all nipples away and start with new.

I hope you're both feeling better soon.

What about acidopholis supplements.. you take them so baby get them through the Bmilk.

Hi. My daughter was given Nystatin around 2 months old for thrush. The thrush didn't get better with that or the next medicine, Diflucan. I was so frustrated and worried about her. I kept trying different ways of caring for her and nothing seemed to help. I finally gave her Ultra Bifidus in a bottle which is an all natural product and I saw results right away. I don't know if it will help you, but I would stop taking that Nystatin! I have read what other people wrote and they are right when they said if it hasn't helped it won't help. I thought I was doing the right thing by finishing all what they gave me of Nystatin and even got more, but if doesn't work right away it won't work. Another thing is to try to not worry too much. You are doing great! You will get pass this yeast problem. If there is only small patches in her mouth another thing I would recommend is to try to rub at it and see if it rubs away. Very gently take some gauze and wet it a little and rub at the white. See with my daughter when I started doing that it started to come off. The doctor said it was breast milk that was being left there and building up. I don't know if that could be the same. I hope this helps.

Hello K., My daughter had thrush and severe diaper rash. I used a Aloe Vera plant to "Heal" her. I only used warm water to clean her bottom. Take a piece of the plant leaf and open it, and "gently rub" the area, put a little vasoline over it. Do this every time you clean her. Give her regular "apple sauce" to "stop" the diarrhea. I would put the aloe vera on your nipples to heal the inside of her mouth. Give the apple sauce to cut the taste. You will see it work and a Happy little Girl. Love, J.

You should also be treated for yeast, and watch your sugar intake which increases and encourages yeast production since you are still breastfeeding.

I agree 100% with you that it is a yeast problem. My doctor gave me a home remedy that worked wonders - but for me. I wouldn't want to do the same on an infant without checking with someone who is familiar with the natural things like a person who works in a health store. If you can, go to a health store and ask them what they would recommend.

Good luck - I can fully understand how miserable this makes the both of you. If you can - let her go without a diaper for a short time here and there - the air will help too. If you are using disposable diapers - maybe a change in brand? My kids for some reason could not use pampers without getting a rash.

Good Luck!!

you're calling the doctor today right? she might be having a reaction to the nystatin- diarrhea is a common side effect. the actual rash should be getting better though, not worse. :(

also, "acidopholous" ;) is supposed to help with them not getting yeast from you in the breastmilk.

I would try Resinol medicated oniment. My nephew is severerly handicapped and is 13 years old and still in diapers. It is the only things that works for him. I also used it on my son when he was in diapers. If the rash was really bad it would usually clear up after about a day. I still use it occasional for everything from insect bites to cuts. I know that the CVS pharmacy by my house has it but you have to ask the Pharmacy for it. The one bad thing is that it is pink and it will stain your clothes if you get it on them.

Hi K.,

Our Twins had bad diapper rash when they were teathing. We looked it up online and they said to use Maylox. Something about the acid in the pee and the maylox helps to reduce that. Also it said corn starch. For a bit when it was really bad we would put some maylox on after changing them and then put some corn starch over top of that. It worked wonders and the diaper rash started clearing up right away. Good Luck!

My daughter always get a terrible diaper rash each time she takes an antibiotic. I always use triple paste and have been very happy. Her Dr. did perscribe something once that was very expensive (I'm sorry I can't remember the name) and that worked just as well as the triple paste.

This sounds like Candida. Candida is an overabundance of yeast.

Since you are breastfeeding, are you getting a good amount of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet? What about protein and lean meats?

Getting on a probiotic will help you both. The probiotic will get the good bacteria into the colon. This will help with the Candida, which will help with the symptoms she is experiencing. I have one and it works great for me.

I'd call the doctor. My son had the same thing, and he ended up being allergic to Nysatin. Same symptoms as your little girl...the rash was getting worse. Your doctor can prescribe something different and it should clear up in a couple of days. Good luck, I know what you are going through!

hi K., thrush hurts so that might be the reason why your little one doesnt want to eat, it just plain hurts!as for is butt he might need the med called mupirocin 2%. at one time when my son was younger i thought it was a diaper rash so i was using butt paste and it didn't get better, then use nystantin on it still didn't get better. until my doc gave me this. it cleared it up right away! as for the poops maybe she has a viral infection thats causing that. why the vingar baths? that just seems like it would sting her poor little bottom. if anything i would use baking soda or and oatmeal bath, but not vingar.but if her butt is still looking bad call the doc and get her in again. and tell her about the diarrha. good luck

Hello K., The diarea is not actually due to a side effect to the nystatin, but to the meds working. It is helping ajust the yeast in her bowel also. If she has been on antibiotics it has killed some of the good bactiria, which allows the yeast to grow. Now her system has to re-balance itself. This is a good sign. Try putting her in the tub with vinigar after ever bowel movement. Even if it's for a few minutes it will clean her skin well without irritating it more and the vinigar is helpful for yeast in itself. Hope this helps.

I worked with someone who had the same kind of issue and was breast-feeding. She had a really hard time getting it cleared up, but what finally worked was Gentian violet. You can get it at the pharmacy, paint her mouth and your nipples with it.
Also, try some monostat on her diaper rash. If it's yeast at all, that will clear it right up!

K.,

My son had both of these because he had been on strong antibiotics that killed all of the good bacteria in his system. We tried all kinds of things (including a couple very expensive dermatologist visits and creams) and the pediatrician approved things that worked were changing diaper brands and acidophilus. Yahoo search the acidophilus for yourself - my pediatrician said you can give orally and use the powder to make a paste and rub it on their butt too. It's an all natural thing that can be bought at Whole Foods or probably a vitamin store. Ask the people for help and they'll show you the pediatric one - you can mix it in the yogurt. Also, I have no idea why changing diaper brands made a difference when he went months without having a problem with them, but it did. Good luck!

Unfortunately, the best remedy is diaper free time just so her skin has a chance to stay dry and breathe. Maybe you can do it during nap time. Lay her on a waterproof sheet and drape cloth diaper over her. My kids were younger and no so mobile when they had this problem.

Good luck!
