11 Yr Old Son Crossing Pinkie Toes?

I have noticed lately that my 11 year old son crosses both of his pinkie toes over and on top of the next toe whenever he is barefooted. He probably does this with shoes on also, but of course I cannot tell! Is this a problem? Could this cause problems later in life? He is 5 ft tall and skinny as a rail... thanks for any ideas or help!

Hi B.,
I am THRILLED to hear about your son crossing his pinkie toes over the next toe - I am 37 years old and STILL do it!! :)
I wouldn't be worried about it, really. I have been doing it since early child hood - it's as comfortable to me as for someone who crosses their legs. I walk, sleep & sit with my toes crossed. It's just a part of everyday life that brings me comfort somehow. I suppose this may be the same feeling your son experiences - it's kind of like a security blanket - nothing has to be wrong but just having it near makes things "right". :)

What a wonderful Mother you are to inquire about it - my mother was not as supportive so as a child I hid my toe crossing - I'm not certain if she thought I was doing any harm but I can assure you - there is no harm involved. I have also been a runner all of my life and it has not created any problems for me. :)

So here's to all my fellow toe crossers and the ones who love them - PINKIE TOE CROSSERS ROCK!!! :) lol!

Have a wonderfully blessed day!

LOL...I still do that! And I'm fairly normal. Of course, it depends on what "normal" really means. ;-)

I used to do that all the time when I was barefooted and I think I turned out just fine. I wouldn't worry about him at all.

My 13 yr old son does that with one foot. We consider it quite a talent. No concerns here...but also he honestly doesn't do it all the time, just to show off. :)

How funny! No, I wouldn't worry about it, just laugh and mark it down in a journal somewhere! My brother was real lanky too and he did all kinds of weird stuff when we were younger- i.e. putting his legs behind his head. Just giggle and ask him what else he can do!

my theory is like cracking your knuckles... crossing your eyes... my dad use to say your knuckles are going to be bigger... and your face better not freeze...

My husband does that, too, and he's 51. Nothing to worry about.

Dear B.:

This may not be the case with your son, but my Grandmothers toes just grew like that. You may want to make sure that he can "uncross" them or he may develop problems with shoes fitting, corns, etc.
