Hello fellow mothers,
My 12 month old daughter is about 16 pounds, petite, with thick thighs and buns. Everytime I get her from her crib, her thighs are stuck in the rails. I have the bumper, but she is to big to have it stop her from putting her legs in between the rails. Her calves are small along with herself , but her thighs are not, so once her thighs get in between the rails she it stuck. Is it already time to move her to a toddler bed?? I hear her in the middle of the night crying because she can't get her legs out of the rails. I have to admit, I've laughed a lot of times seeing her this way, because it's it IS funny :-D, when she gets stuck, but I'm still a mother and don't want her to suffer with her thunder thighs (LOL). Does anyone else have this problem?? Or do I just have to keep waking the middle of the night to get her unstuck?? I hope one of you wonderful ladies have an answer for this. Thanks in advance.

Too cute! I'd sew additional little ties onto the bumper, one for each bar, top and bottom. You oculd do it awfully cheaply, and I think it'd do the trick. Good luck!

My chunky little boy had this problem too when he was a little guy. I felt so bad for him! I found this cool product called the Crib Shield. It's basically a mesh covering for all 4 walls of the crib. It stopped the limbs from getting stuck but didn't restrict his ability to see out. It worked great for 8 months until he moved into his big bed. The only downside is that you have to take the bumper off to put it on. May want to consider toddler bed with soft rail that tucks under first mattress. She may want to grow up and want bed like 3 1/2 year old. I remember putting my child in a toddler bed early. I would also have a twin on the other side that I could lay in until the child was asleep and then I would advance to my bed. There is always a reason for their behavior. if it is not through--she may go over and also they learn how to reach and lower side. Hope this is encouraging
I knew there was a reason we moved our kids into beds young! :-) I have 5 kids and we have moved all of them out of the crib into a regular twin bed when they ae right around a year old. With my oldest it was because I was expecting #2, but then we just kept up the tradition. We have never used toddler beds, just regular twin beds. I usually had one of those inexpensive bed rails ont he side (the oldest was on a daybed and I just truned it around backwards) IT has worked for us. I would make sure that you definately get a picture of her stuck before you fix the problem- I love pictures of my kids stuck in odd ways- they make great scrapbook pages.

I,too, have the breathable crib bumper, it's great. You can tuck it down below the mattress so the little feet can't wiggle under the bumper. They carry them at Babies R Us.

I think it is time to remove the bumper...OUr doctor said to have it gone by 6 months. As for her getting stuck I have no idea. OUr son was a chunker too and he didnt ever get stuck, that I know of. Poor thing. :o(
I had the same issue with my daughter at times. I was weaved the bumper pad in and out of the crib and pushed it down just a little bit so it didn't sit even with the mattress (just a bit lower). It makes it tighter and harder for them to get thier legs under it. It worked for my daughter, hope it does for yours. Good Luck!!
My kids had this happen too. Try using clear plexiglass (you can get it at the hardware store). Pre-measure the four sides of the crib, and have each side cut to fit. Drill holes in the corners and then secure it with zip ties to the crib rails. It only has to come up a little over the bumper pad height so she doesn't kick her leg through.

When my daughter was a year old we took her out of her crib. Not because she got stuck, but because she was (and still is) a climber and would climb out of her crib. We took her crib matress and put it on the floor, without a bedframe. That way if she rolled out of bed, it wasn't very far, so she wouldn't get hurt. This solution worked wonderfully for us.

Why not try a little toddler bed they use the same mattress that is in the crib, or make her bed in a play pen
if you are afraid of her getting out of bed and wondering around. Maybe you'll get some sleep.
Wow, she is little. I thought my girls were small at that age, around 20lbs. I have a 2,4, and 9 year old, all girls.

If your worried about her going into a toddler bed right now you could get a crib tent. They are usually for the climbers but it would also solve your problem as well. It fits on the inside nice and tight and has a dome top so they can stand and they cant get stuck...you dont have to zip it shut if you dont need to. I hope this helps.
Theres a thing called a BreathableBaby Crib Bumber, and also Crib Shield..The shield goes all the way up and over the top of the crib rails. Its made of a breathable mesh material & you can still see through it. Hope this helps you. My daughter was doing the same thing.It started to feel like she was doing it on purpose to get me into her room as often as she liked, LOL! Thats when something had to give. I would definitely still leave your lil girl in her crib tho. Good luck!
My daughter would some times get her leg stuck she also was a little chuncky so, she could not get her leg out. She use to go under the bumper so, I had taken it out but then her legs were getting stuck. So, I turned the bumper unside down and tied it then tucked it between the mattress and crib rail and that seemed to help.
We had this a few times, but because it was overall rare, we did not do anything. If this happens frequently, would she still sleep in a light sleep sack?

Try a crib tent. It has breathable material that blocks all around the crib. They have them at Target and Babies R Us. :)

We actually had the same thing happen with our daughter at the same age. It freaked me out the first time and I was about to lube her up with cooking oil to get her out. :) My calm husband was able to turn her and get her leg out. We actually did not do anything. She did it with and without the bumper. You can take the pad out. I don't think she is old enough for a toddler bed. You might go and get a mesh rail to put in the crib. It should go up far enough so that when she throws her leg, she won't get above the rail. Make sure it is well secured in the crib too. Try Babies R Us or even Craigslist.
My daughter steps over the bumper and sticks her legs out through the lats, so simply reinforcing the bumper with extra ties would not work in my case. You might want to considder a netting, the same kind you see on a playpen. You can get them online at superbabystore.com. It costs about $60, but it's the simplest way to "block" the spaces between the slats. I helped a friend attach sheets of tulle to the inside of the crib rails. It was cheaper, but the crib nets are nicer and easier. Graco also makes a netting that goes over the outside of the crib- like a pillowcase, kind of- but I don't think that would keep the baby from sticking her legs through. This one only costs $12, so I plan to buy one of these nets and line the inside of my daughter's crib with it. Hope this helps! Good luck!
