Hello Mamas! Hope this day & every day finds you all doing well & blessed. My son is 12 months old and has been experiencing constipation or so I thought, is it or is it not constipation that he is experiencing? He has been going through this for about a month now. He has been going fine until a month ago. I breastfeed 2-3 times daily, he takes lactose formula & that is the same since he was born and @ 10 months we introduced fruits and veggies & other table foods, due to him getting really sick with congestion he refused babyfood and so I just started him on fresh fruits and meats & veggies. So up till a month ago I noticed that he was not going every other day so I would help him by inserting a thermometer to help him get his bowel moving, I read this on the internet & used vasoline, he did fine but then I noticed his bowels were getting harder & when he pushed he screamed & I saw blood in his stool from the tearing of the stool passing through. I only did it a couple of times. I called his pedi and they recommended Karo syrup so I bought that did it every day in his formula and nothing, that was a whole week and no bowel movement so I stopped that & purchased glycerin suppositories and it helped him go faster but I don't feel comfortable doing that every day to get him to go. Ok, so now I took him in to the Dr. and he felt his stomach, he's soft as can be, they sent me for an x-ray and nothing, hardly any poop in him. Left the office and they recommended that I give him mineral oil and keep doing the suppositories this has been for the last week and finally today I saw some poop stain in his pamper so I gave him a suppository and he went not too hard and not foul smelling. So, does this sound like he is constipated or just scared to poop? The first times that he had a bowel movement it was foul smelling but he shows NO signs of discomfort, stomach is soft and isn't too fussy. The only time he cries and shakes is when he has the sensation to poop, is this normal and should I take him back to the Dr or ride it out and keep doing what I am doing. I stopped bananas but still give him applesauce in yogurt, he does not like juice because I did not give him any and I give him some water but I'm still trying to get him to drink it from a sippy cup. Ok, think this sums it up. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks and have a blessed day!

Oh my goodness, the poor baby and poor you. I think a probiotic supplement could be helpful. You can get it at the larger HEB's or at Whole Foods - powder form to put in yogurt/milk/water. You might also try baby food/pureed prunes to mix in with things. And just lots of fruit and lots of liquids in general. The whole thermometer thing really scares me (just because it's on the internet most certainly does not mean that it's safe) and I agree with the other poster about watching out for suppositories. It sounds to me like he is scared to poop because he tore - which is perfectly understandable. You need to focus on getting his stool soft so he can have easy bms. This is most affected by diet. If your dr is only giving you medicines and not talking about the foods he eats, you need to get another dr. Hang in there!

My 20 mo. old has had problems with constipation and loose bowel movements since he was 6 mos. old or younger. His pediatrician gave me a few samples of Florastor for Kids, buy it over the counter, but you have to ask the pharmacist for it. It's in little packets in powder form and put it in his drink or yogurt, etc. It helps regulate them and once I use it for 2-3 days, his poop gets back to normal. Sometimes, it's the food that I give him that causes it, so w/time, I've been able to sort out what works for him and doesn't. When I could tell that he was struggling and needed to poop but couldn't b/c of constipation, I would immediately give him Gerbers apple/prune juice, only 1/2 a serving and it would do the trick right away. I'm surprised that your doctor told you Karro syrup, I thought they had did away w/that. Ok, well, good luck and I H. he feels better.

Glycerin suppositories can actually cause constipation if used for more than a week. A lot of times the suppository will make the child dependent on them for a BM also. I personally try to stear clear of them. You might want to try a enema. (ASK YOUR CHILDS DOCTOR FIRST) They have salt water enemas that are in a little surrenge, you insert and squeese the fluid in, usually with in 30 min to 1 hour you get a BM. Keyro syrup is good, you might also want to try prune, juice, pear juice, pineapple juice. You might also try fleet laxative or mineral oil in juice... If all else fails ask to see a gastro. My daughter has had chronic constipation and has been on a stool softner (Miralax is the over the counter name, but before that it was called Poly Glycol NF 3350 powder) since she was 2 years old she is now 6. She would bloat up so bad she looked like a 9 month pregnat 2 year old. It was terrible. The bleeding you saw was fromhis rectum tearing, this is a vicious cycle that can cause with holding, because they have experianced pain with BM, even at 12 months they are qucik learners! Good luck. Constipation is so difficult for young children, I have watched my little girl suffer for 6 years!

Maybe try Miralax (about a tsp daily) in water or yogurt or something. That should help get his stools soft enough to go without pain. Maybe you can do that til he gets really good with the sippy cup and then load him up on water.

Papaya is the best thing in the world. It's a fruit, it's natural and it's healthy and it will help him poop very fast. My son doesn't have that problem and I can only give him papaya once becasue then it came become diarrea. So I hope you try this and that he likes it becasue nothing better than try with natural stuff.

My doctor freaked out when I told her I gave my daughter Karo. I don't think they do that anymore. My doctor prescribed Lactulose. It is a prescription, but it works like a miracle. I used to give it to my daughter every day and now I don't need to anymore. You don't even have to give a full dosage. Just give whatever you find works. It is non habit forming and sweet. Your child may like it, but if not, then it goes great in any type of milk, formula, or food. I would ask the doctor about getting a prescription of that.
