13 Month Old Won't Drink Cold Milk

Hi Moms,
We have been giving our son (13 months) whole milk for about 3 weeks and he REFUSES to drink it cold. I've tried giving it to him at meal times and as soon as he tastes it, he'll throw his cup on the floor. He'll drink water or juice with no problem, but I'm still having to heat up his milk in order for him to drink it! It's not that big of an issue, but it certainly makes it more difficult when we are out and about. Any ideas? Thanks so much!

So What Happened?

Thank you to all who responded for this. I will try warming it less and less and hopefully that will work! I also loved the idea about buying the individual milks that don't need to be kept at room temp! That is sure to make it easier when we're out. Thanks again!

so heat it up

Just gradually lessen how much you heat it. So start with 45 seconds then after a few days go down to 35 seconds, and every 2 or 3 days go down 5 to 10 seconds.

Hi M.
My daughter was like that with her milk when she was a baby..honestly, we found that we just had to slowly wean her off of warm milk by heating it less and less week after week until she was just offered cold milk. And when they are thirsty enough and all you offer them is cold milk, they will drink it...but this is after weeks of heating it less, so it will take some time usually.
Good luck, I know how difficult this is!

Why don't you continue serving the milk warmed up, but gradually warm it for a shorter time, so he gets used to it slowly - milk is such a great drink in so many ways, it would be a shame for him to suddenly stop drinking it. If you warm it for 40 seconds, just decrease by a couple seconds each week, or as slowly as you want. My kids never liked "cold" milk either, but they love it now !

We have had the same issue. We would start out by warming the milk to take the chill out of it...making it room temp. Then we would slowly not warm it as much...it may take some time, but that is how it worked for us!

I have a 3 year old who still doesn't like milk cold or warm. The only solution I have found is to flavor it with sugar free flavorings like strawberry or chocolate. My ped also suggested give a children's vitamin with calicum to help. Good Luck!

My son just turned 2, and I still warm up his milk. If I need to bring him milk somewhere, I just warm it up before we leave and put it in one of those insulated sippy/straw cups and then into my little cooler pack without the ice. Then, I usually give it to him within 2 hours, and he's fine. On occasion, if he's really wanting milk and all I have is cold, he will drink some of it just to "quench" his milk need. People have told me I spoil him by doing this (warming up his milk), but I don't care.

My suggestion is the same as what Jodi already mentioned.

Wean him slowly off the warm milk so he eventually will be drinking cold milk. For a few days or maybe up to a week warm it up as usual. Then the next week, don't warm it up as much.
Then do this process again... until the are serving him cold milk.

I hope this helps. I did something like this to get my twins off of formula. I slowly added more milk to their bottles and less formula until it was all milk in the bottles.

Neither of my kids drink milk because they just don't like it warm, cold or flavored. I make sure they get enough vitamis/calcium from other sources. My pedi said it's totally fine. Unless you think it's a big deal for your kids to specifically drink milk I would try other sources - yogurt, cheese, brocoli are things my kids like.

I never had this problem, but in the short-term while you try some of these suggestions about warming less and less an easy solution to what to do while you’re out and about is trying the Horizon Organic Milk single serve containers. They are packaged in such a way as to not require refrigeration.

Maybe your child will be OK with room temperature milk. They only come in 2%, but I started using them when we were on the go when my daughter was around 13 months or so. I use these all the time. I always have a spare in the diaper bag in case we get stuck somewhere. I love them. You can get them a Jewel or order in bulk on Amazon.

Hope this helps.

My two daughters have never had their milk cold. It's a pain, but when we are at restaurants, the servers have always been more than willing to heat up the milk a little bit. I thank my mom for causing this because she served my first child warm milk and we never were able to serve cold after that!!!:)

Try slowly changing the temperature every couple of days. Warmed, slightly cooler, then room temperature. This way the change won't be to drastic at once. Make sure he sees and hears you enjoying your glass of nice cold milk. Also, the cold milk may upset his tummy at his young age. Good luck mommy.

Hi M.,
My daughter was also a stinker about cold milk. After I had her used to the sippy cup for a month, I did a "de-tox" on warm milk. It took about a week. Basically, I would not give her anything else to drink except the milk. At first she would just wait until it was room temperature before drinking it, but eventually drank it colder and colder until she did fine with it right out of the fridge. Then I started giving her juice and water again, and it didn't put her off the milk at all. It sounds harsh when I read it over, but it wasn't that bad. She never went on strike for drinking, she'd just wait the temperature change out. I do know that if she thought she would get juice instead though, she would have resisted more stubbornly.
Good luck!

Hi! I learned because one of my friends gave warm milk, and then ran into the same problem as you. So, I never gave warmed anything. It was always room temperature when they did have formula, and cold milk! But that doesn't do you alot of good now! Learn if there is a baby #2 though!!! I agree with several people saying that maybe if you warm it up less and less, and maybe "trick" baby into getting used to it???

Good luck!!!

So warm it less and less each week until he's drinking it cold. Me personally I wouldn't allow him to throw the cup on the floor for a variety of reasons, but that's me. No temper tantrums allowed in the house...not even from mommy and daddy.
