I know in the past I have had dry scalp especially in the summertime, but since the pregnancy it has gotten worse. Is this normal during your pregnancy? Can someone help me? Thanks.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to all of you that responded. I talked to my hairdresser and she gave me Dr. Miracle's oil treatment during my hair appointment. It is medicated and felt great on my scalp. It has help. I did go buy Kera Care's itchy scalp shampoo and conditioner for the times when I have to wash my hair myself. That has helped. Again, thanks for the great advice.

Pick up some (good quality) fish oil supplements. I sell Shaklee, which is an excellent brand, or Whole Foods will have a good brand for you. After a week of taking the amount recommended, you will start to notice a differce. It will be excellent for baby as well.

I just learned this on The Tira Show. Because doctors don't like for you to use to many chemical in your hair while pregnant. Tira suggested (not for just pregnant women, but for all) that you use Olive Oil for dry flaky scalps. It washes out when you shampoo and conditions, but it keeps the flakes away and keeps your hair healthy. The problem with that is Olive Oil is very expensive. Dry skin is normal because the baby is taking all the nutrients it needs from you for it to grow. You can also take some Vitamin E tablets along with anything you are doing outside so that you are doubling up on the moisture internal and external.

I had the same problem with my first pregnancy and I just got it again with my second. All I did was switch to dandruff shampoo, that helps with the dry, itchy scalp. I only use it a few times a week and so far no more itchy scalp.

I JUST went through this. It is normal. I tried all the heavy duty dandruff shampoos and they didn't kick the problem. Having the baby did though so that's the good news. Bad news is that you have many months ahead of you. I kept using the dandruff shampoo and also used green tea. You steep 2 bags in one cup of water. Let it steep overnight and pour over your scalp. Rub it in as much as you can and rinse after a couple of minutes. It helped about 50% over the shampoo alone. Be sure to wash out the tub/sink/shower stall when you're finished because it will leave a ring. Don't worry, if you forget to rinse the tub, it comes off with some cleaner. Good luck and God bless!! Enjoy your pregnancy!

I know that olive oil is very good for your scalp. You might want to try massaging that into your scalp once and see how it helps, then do it every once in a while as often as you want. It is cheap and natural. I think you can just massage it in and let it set for a little bit then wash it out. I am about to try that myself, it can't hurt.

I have to agree about the olive oil. Don't use too much of it because it can clog your pores and cause dandruff (at least it does with me). I just massage a little on my scalp, brush through my hair, and then put a little on the ends to prevent splitting. You can also try a leave in conditioner (Cantu makes a good one).

I am an OB nurse & it is very normal to have more dry skin, as well as scalp during pregnancy. Let me suggest the Arbonne Baby body wash/shampoo. I use it myself & it works great! Arbonne offers pure, safe, beneficial products for your entire family. I would be glad to send you a sample of all the baby line products...they help grown ups too!

Yes, that's normal. The hormonal changes do all kinds of things to your body. I'm also a black woman (36), with two young daughters. I have dry skin anyway, and my skin and scalp got worse when I was pregnant. Unfortunately I've still been unable to find anything that relieves it for too long. Make sure you are using hair products without alcohol, and condition often. If you can find a leave-in conditioner without alcohol, try it. If you find something that works, let me know!

I would recommend to add a high quality fish oil (like Carlson's or Garden of LIfe and not what you can find at Walmart) to your diet - it's healthy for both you and the baby and it should help your dry skin. Also, this website has an excellent suggestion to make sure you're drinking enough water (the fact that the problem is typically worse during the summer is a sign that not enough water could be your issue):

Be sure you are drinking enough water! If you don't think that is an issue (or even if you do), I would recommend trying Melaleuca Oil Shampoo. My boys had terribly dry skin (due to eczema), particularly on their scalps. We tried medicated shampoos that didn't work nearly as well as the Melaleuca Oil shampoo. Their scalp was so much better within just a week or two! :)

I had the same problem and I did 2 things that seemed to really help. I drank more water to try to keep everything hydrated and I use Arbonne's self-adjusting shampoo with tea tree oil. That took care of the problem.

Congrats on your pregnancy and hope all goes well!
