14 Month Old and Trouble with NAPS

My son is 14 months old and has been a good sleeper, night and naps since the age of 6 months. For the last 4-6 weeks he has changed his ways at home. My mom babysits (God-Sent), my son and he has his own room at her house and sleeps in a pack and play for 3-4 hours!!! At home he sleeps in his own nursery in his crib but will only sleep 1 or maybe 1.5 hours??!! When he wakes up he is cranky and obviously still tired. My mother and I follow the same schedule on feeding and sleeping; my son usually wakes about 6:30 or 7 and nap at 10 or 10:30. We sleep trained him at 5 months and it worked wonders, we followed Tracy Hogg's suggestions about staying in the room and picking him up if he cried but then placing him right down when he calmed. I know that sleep training at this age is a little more difficult because 1.babies are heavier and 2. every time you pick them up you might overstimulate. I am thinking of getting a Pack and Play for our home, because I am not sure what if anything I am doing worng.....Any Advice?

What can I do next?

healthy sleep habits, happy child- is a good book

with my kids and naptime- I try to adjust the environment to their current needs. maybe a white noise machine? or soft classical music? a white noise machine is something you could use at grandma's and your house- and would cover any extraneous noise that either place may have... could also be that grandma wears him out better??? maybe? hard to say.

white noise tends to be magic though.

good luck-

I know my daughter used to fall asleep a lot when she was in preschool (I know, way older...but...just a thought!)...anyway...she'd fall asleep there and she hardly EVER took naps at all at home. I finally figured it was because her mornings are so busy there...mentally and physically she's doing a ton. The mornings I kept her really busy at home...she also napped. Just a thought :) I certainly don't think you're doing anything wrong!

This is the same for my daughter. I tried to mimic what daycare does for naps, and it never worked.
My other thought is he is going down for a nap TOO early....my daughter was down to one nap by 12 months...it was 1130 or 12 (after lunch) til 2 or 230...at home its 1130 til about 1 if I am lucky
I dont think you are doing anything wrong...its just another phase he is growing into (different surroundings at nap time vs being at grandmas)

We had similar issues with our son. He has had on and off sleep issues since he was young, but like you, we sleep trained him at 6 months. We did add a few things to his sleep routine that seems to help. We have black out curtains and a noise machine that make his room impervious to sound and light. However, there are times when it does not seem as effective and in our case that mostly has to do with him teething. At about 14 months my son's molars started coming in, and once they were in, he was taking 2-3 hour naps each time. So, you may want to put some Hyland's on your baby's gums and give him some teething tablets before his nap to ensure he's comfortable.
Also, I recall that around 13 months we moved my son to one nap a day and it did take him awhile to get into the routine, but he is now napping like a champ.

They all go through phases. I agree, can you put him down later? Make sure he has plenty of morning physical activity to get him ready for a good nap. Also, how many hours does he sleep at night? As they get older they sleep less at naptime... 3-4 hours is a really long time (at least in our house). Good for you!
