Our son has this horrible virus (that has no cure). Has anyone tried any homeopathic remedies that worked? My son is not talking yet, but it is so difficult to watch him experience this. We are on day 2 and he has sores on the roof of his mouth, the back of his throat and on his tongue (he had a fever last night-but the fever is gone now). Most sites say just wait it out, and offer pain reliever....Please help, I welcome your advice and comments.

I used this mixture that helped a lot in healing the sores. Mix together 1/2 teaspoon of children's antihistamine and children's antacid together and then put on the sores with a q-tip. (Once the kids get older, they can swish it in thier mouths and then spit it out). I had a house full of 3 kids with the HFM disease and they all actually looked forward to getting this. They said it made the sores feel better and it tasted good. I also learned that it looks worse than it feels.

that poor baby! would popsicles help? Or even just ice? Something cold might help soothe his poor mouth. We were lucky, our daughter only got them on her hands and feet, we luckily avoided the mouth part.

You can really only give Tylenol. :( So sad. You may also want to give him probiotics and yogurt since this is a viral infection that starts in the intestine. If his mouth hurts you can try giving him popsicles or putting ice in a teething net so that he can suck on it.

We just went through this with our youngest when he was about this age. Call your pharmacist and give him/her your child's weight. Then ask how much and when of both ibuprofen (Motrin) and acetaminophen (Tylenol) you can give. (I have the benefit of being a pharmacist.) I would dose both around the clock but alternate them (ibuprofen at 9 AM, acetaminophen at noon, ibuprofen again at 4 PM, etc.) assuming your child does not have any kidney or liver problems. Be careful not to give too much or double dose if you're sharing the dosing with someone else.

We also gave our baby drinks with ice in it, which he liked until the pain was to the point he couldn't drink at all. We then switched to chocolate ice cream; that kept him hydrated enough that he didn't go into the hospital. He also liked to chew on frozen wash cloths.

Not much consolation now, but it does pass pretty quickly in the overall scheme of things.

My son had this so bad he pulled out his elbow when we were holding him down to get pain reliever down him (previously he had a few episodes of nursemaid elbow as a toddler, that event was his third). While at the ER to get his elbow popped back in, the Dr made up a topical lidocain solution to dab on his mouth sores that he gave us to take home and apply. This helped, but he still mostly refused all food and drink until he was good and desparte for water and would chug it all at once. If you child is refusing to drink, I would see if your Dr would make up a solution for you or maybe there is a prescription form at the pharmacy.
Really really aweful. I was fortunate my other kids had much milder cases (at least I think they all had it when they were around 2-3). Its a typical toddler virus and no there is no antiviral that will stop it in its tracks to my knowledge. Chinese medicine may have some remedies, but by the time you figure this out you will likely be on the end of the infection. Good luck to you and your little one. It was the least sleep I EVER got over a week. I hope you guys fare better.

If it is so unbearable to watch, go to the baby's doctor. I do believe the doctor can cure this, plus this is very contagious, and I hope you are keeping him away from other children until he has the proper medicine. With this virus, home remedies will not work. If it does, it will take a very long time, and I wouldn't be able to watch my child suffer.

It took my son about a week to get over the pain stopped about day four and he was back to normal at day seven, I didn't have anything to give him either. Popcicles, he lived on frozen gogurt's and wheat bread! I know it isn't much! But there didn't seem to be anything else out there

My little girl had it . . . ran a fever of 102 for a good 7 days. Alternating the pain relievers works (a separate trip to the ER months later they gave me the same advice).

You can also do a small dosage of Peptobismol to coat and soothe the mouth. I don't remember the dosage . . . maybe ask the pediatric nurse. I would also avoid anything citus (including tomatoes) as that would aggravate it. Chamomile tea may also help.

From a homeopathic / nutritional standpoint, short-term high doses of vitamin D can be very effective against viruses. Look up "stoss therapy" for vitamin D for the dosage. The last time I got hit with a bug, I did this and felt better within a day.

The good news is that you were able to see the sores so you know for sure that this is what it is.
Both an ER doc at Childrens and the pediatrician recommended "magic mouthwash"- equal parts maalox/children's benadryl for my 11 month old. We used a syringe to put the mixture in his mouth. It helped to coat the sores- then after about 10 minutes or so I was able to get him to nurse. The mixture also helped him to sleep at night. We used it at night for days 3, 4, and 5- then after that didn't need it anymore. Check with your doc for the benadryl dosing for his weight.
They both also recommended cold foods/beverages. We did pedialyte popsicles, but I bet frozen bananas might also feel good... Good luck!

As with any virus, you kind of just have to wait it out and make him comfy. The good thing is, little kids get through viruses more quickly than we do.

My 4 year old had HFM this spring. It was no fun for about 4 days. cold stuff like popcicles and ice cream will feel nice, but be careful because the acidity of the juice can hurt the sores :-(

Other than that, I say go with the meds to keep him comfy.

Sorry you're going through this.

AAARUGH! I just got over this. How does a 38 year old ex- teacher come down with a virus mostly found in children under 10...no idea! I took paid releivers ,ate yogurt, drank milk, sometimes with Carnation instant breakfast mixed in, soup was another food that helped. NOTHING too acidy or salty.
