14 Month Old with Diarrhea

My daughter came down with the stomach flu just a little over a week ago and has had diarrhea lingering now for 8 days. I've seen the doctor and they recommended giving her accidopholis powder mixed in her milk or water. She's hardly eaten anything in the last week except for bananas and yogurt and a few crackers each day. She does drink a considerable amount of water though, so she's not getting dehydrated (I hope). I'm concerned because she has big diarrhea episodes at least 2 times a day. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there anything else I can do to help firm her up? Thanks!!

What can I do next?

MJ,

My family has discovered that too much Apple Juice thins us out, and cheese firms us up. That might work for you.

Hope this helps,
Melissa

I HAVE THIS PROBLEM!!!!!

We have gotten it under control by feeding him plain or vanilla yogurt, applesauce, apples, bananas, rice, crackers, steamed potatos without peels, chicken soup, and by switching to soy milk. We also put rice cereal into his applesauce to add starch to it, and gave him a supplement added to his food that contains the live cultures found in yogurt. I can't remember the name but you can find it at any drug store and they make one especially for kids. Ours also started out with a flu bug and just LINGERED! He's had it for months now. I have taken him to be seen many times and finally got a new Dr. who's advice (above) started working. He also recommended using somthing called Eucerine Aquafor Ointment. It's in the baby aisle near the desitin. It cleared up his BLEEDING MISERABLE diaper rash in about 24 hours, and prevents it from coming back with all the diareah. It seems like no matter how fast you change it, they get irritated with that much diarreah. Poor things! Good luck!

My 4 year old had about 9 days of vomiting and diahhrea. Not constantly though. At any rate, my doctor told me to cut dairy completely until it was over (I'm not sure why). Also go for things like plain white bread (which he never eats), white rice - the more processed stuff. And I remember the acronym BRAT from a couple years ago - bananas, rice, apple sauce (not apples), toast - all things that should help diahhrea.

Good luck!

DO TRY the acidopholis powder, I used it for my kids recently after they had a bout of vomiting and diarrhea (and my daughter had lingering diarrhea) and it worked, and many of my friends swear by it for "regulating" their kids after their little systems are upset. It contains far more of the good bacteria that the tummy needs to digest properly than yogurt does, therefore it will help much more quickly than yogurt. Diarrhea can be a hard pattern to break. You can find it at health food stores or at Fred Meyer in the health food/supplement section. My kids, who are a little older, take the chewables, but the powder is best for babies and younger ones.

I'm sorry your little girl has been so sick lately. The flu has just been horrible this year. :-(

I noticed you said she's been eating bananas each day. Both my daughter and her friend of the same age was having problems with looser poops and bad diaper rashes before they were 2 years old. I ran out of bananas and the poop problems disappeared. I told my friend, and she limited the amount of bananas for her little guys too (he was eating at least 2 a day). We found out that too many bananas gave them problem poop, so as long as they don't get more than 1/2-1 banana a day (at the most) they're fine.

So, I thought you might want to try a different fruit or veggie for a couple days to see if that helps at all (I would suggest something easy, like applesauce or sweet potatoes). Just stay away from citrus or anything known for aiding with constipation (e.g. peaches, pears, prunes, apricots, etc.) Also, it might be worth trying something with rice or oats.

Our little girl has always been too small so when she gets sick she loses any weight she has put on. I always have to limit her dairy (she's a big puker) and try to give her oatmeal, pedialite and other tummy friendly things. I send well wishes for your little girl to get better soon! :-)

Hi - I just went through the same thing with my son. He got the stomach flu and for about 6-7 days he had diarrhea. I also asked the doc and was told that he just has to get the virus out of his system and it would take some time. I think that is what it sounds like with your child as well..it just takes time to run its course.
I gave him applesauce, bananas, yogurt, graham crackers, stuff like that. He would not really eat anything for a while either. I dont think you should worry too much if she is getting enough water and liquids and is not dehydrated. Just have to wait it out unfortunatley!
Hang in there!

i would avoid the yogurt even though it has the beneficial bacteria in it. try the acidophilus powder in a little apple juice (apples carry out toxins from the body) or applesauce. Put her on the BRAT diet, bananas, rice, applesauce, toast for awhile and see if that helps.

good luck

Our son has had two bouts of this in the last 4 months. He is 9.5 months old now, so we try to follow the b.r.a.t. diet as best we can with him, which is what it sounds like you are doing with your daughter. Bananas, Rice, applesauce ,and toast, I think are the coordinating words to the acronym. One thing that finally worked for him after 7 days of diarhea this last time was making rice cereal with water. That gave him bulk without dairy or formula and seemed to slow him down considerably. Good luck!
