14 Year Old Complaining of Headaches?

Hello,

My 14 year old son has been complaining of headaches and dizziness for a few months now. At first, I thought he was exaggerating to get out of school (he has been hard to deal with in the going to school department), but as time has gone on with the same complaint, I decided to take him to be seen by the doctor. While the doctor was performing a neurological test on him, it was discovered that he has a Cerebellar tremor. That prompted the doctor to order a CT scan. The problem is, we can't have the CT scan done for a couple of weeks, and being that I am anxiety prone, I know I am going to have a heck of a time waiting! My question is, have any of you other mother's had a child with the same problem, and if so, what was their diagnosis? I am scared to death that it is a brain tumor, and while the doctor explained to me that it could be nothing, I can't help but worry!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Sorry everyone, I am not used to using this site so I figured I would answer questions this way. The reason we have to wait for the CT scan is due to our insurance. They have to ok the procedure before it can be done unless it is an emergency. The doctor did say she would try to get us in ASAP. His eyes were checked today also and his vision is good, and he has been to the dentist recently but no problems with teeth either. He is also not much of a gum chewer. I suffer with anxiety and when I do, I do well controlling it in front of my children because the last thing I want is them to panic. Therefore, I thought this would be a good place to release some of my anxiety. Thank You all for your responses and I will make sure to update more after our CT scan.

Hi C.,
If the docs thought your son had anything seriously wrong they would not wait a couple of weeks for a CT scan. They would act immediately from my experiences. I know how terrifying this must be for you and I would advise you to call back your doctor with a list of questions. Hopefully they can put your mind somewhat at ease. I know you can not even think when you are originally hearing the news.
God Bless you and your son.

First, calm down. A friend of ours' teen just had a 2nd brain tumor removed, non-cancerous type both times. Came back as the 1st was removed in infancy and doc said brain is so small then he must have missed a bit of it and grew back but felt he got whole thing this time. She is fine. Best of luck to you and thoughts and prayers sent your way that all will be fine.

I vote to give chiropractic treatment a try. (Make sure you go to one that is recommended to you by family or friends!) We love our chiropractor. But we've been to 2 different ones who give chiropractors a bad name as well.... The chiropractor has helped me out with my headaches!

Does he chew a lot of gum? My daughter was getting frequent headaches and it was found she is sensitive to the aspartame in all the gum she likes to chew. It's in almost every gum in the stores! There are only 3 gums that don't contain it. She was also experiencing weird tingling in her arms and once in a while she would shake or shiver for no apparent reason.

Aspartame has been said to be "safe" but some studies have shown that's it's not so safe for everyone. It has been linked to headaches, stomachaches and seizures.

He may have another issue, but don't let him chew any gum with aspartame! Once we got rid of the gum her headaches stopped along with the other symptoms.

Scary stuff.

Good luck with your scan!

Hi C.,

I am friends with a chiropractor who has the largest pediatric chiropractic clinic in the state of Georgia. Chiropractors can do wonders. If you don't know one you can go to ucspine.com and find one in your area.

Please don't let your head go straight to brain tumor. There can be many minor things that are causing this....things that can be fixed.

God bless....and let us know how he's doing!

Has he been to the dentist? I had an absess tooth once and the only symptom I had were headaches..terrible headaches. It took months to figure it out because the tooth itself didn't hurt. I had a CT and nothing showed up. Does he wear glasses? If not get his eyes checked if you haven't recently needing them could cause headaches. Why do you have to wait for a CT?

I agree with the other moms. If they felt like this was really dangerous to his health, they would have ordered the CT scan done that day.

Did they offer him anything for relief when he is in pain?
I would ask about that.

Remember you set the tone for your son. You can freaked out here on mamapedia and with your husband, but try not to be freaked around your son, he does not need any more drama right now.
