I have attempted to potty train my 15-month-old for the past month or so and she is not interested. All she wants to do is play in the toilet. Is this normal and are there any helpful tips to help with my journey.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your input. I realize that she is still too young and trust me, I love that she gets to stay little for even longer. I've heard people talk about potty training as young as a year but obviously they are sadly mistaken or don't remember those days. Anyways, I appreciate everyones help.

With that experience I have two boys and I thought the youngest was ever get potty trained but with some advice from different people...they will go when they want to, It maybe a month or longer but when she is interested she will go....Just ask her if she needs to go potty. Another thing that might help is take her to the bathroom with you..

I think that 15 months old is very young to potty train. My first child (girl) was totally trained at 2 1/2 yrs. old, and my second daughter wasn't totally trained until a little before 3 years old. I didn't start until they were about 2 yrs. old. Mine are now 10 & 7 so I don't know if it is different now, but I haven't known of anyone else to have their children trained before 2 yrs. old. I think the reason is that they are too young to care. You might be better off trying again in about three months or so. Good luck!

Worked in infant room and two year old room for five years in daycare. The best advice I can give is as soon as she wakes up from the night or at naptimes, immediately put her on the toilet and help support her b/c she will still be groggy. She will be too sleepy to fight her natural urge to go. Wait till she is finished and praise her (yay! good girl). Keep doing that every time ~ eventually she will get it - she will like the attention and praise. Hope this helps!

From one mom to another, she isn't ready. And this is completely normal. I have potty trained twins and it was no picnic!!! LOL Although all kids are different, especially girls and boys, they were not even beginning to show signs at this age of wanting to potty train at this young age. Sit her on the potty from time to time, keep her introduced to it. After nap time, before bath time, just don't push it. She let you know when she is ready. And life will be much more easier, for everyone involved! LOL

Good luck! Take care!

Good that you are starting when she is that young. Most doctors say work with them at 18 months. But Sometimes It takes alot longer to get the child potty train. My daughter Just now fully potty train and she is 4 now. The best way to potty train I would say is make her wear panties. Tell her the pullups are gone. And keep on taking her to the toliet every 30 mins after she eats and drinks. Potty training can be so stressful at times, but you got to make it fun and exciting!! Reward her with stickers etc. But keep this in mind when she is ready she will be potty train. Some kids take longer. Good Luck and God Bless.

It is completely normal. I drove myself nuts trying to potty train my first child & honestly once u introduce them to the concept they will do it when they are ready. 15 months is very early both of mine were 2 ar a little after, you are only going to stress yourself out.

If your child is interested in TV my daughter loved the video Potty Power. I got it through Amazon.com

Hope this helps.

This is way too early. Relax and back off. She'll let you know when she's ready. This is an area that is in the child's total control and the more you push - the more she won't do it. She may not be potty trained until she's three - and that's okay.

At 15months she maybe still a little young to potty train. My oldest (6 now) seemed interested when she was 18mths old, well that didn't last long. We didn't push it until she was a little over 2years old. We concentrated on her pottying and excelled in 1 wk. My twin girls are a little harder they are 3yrs old. I did give them the benefit of the doubt (born preemie). Emily has cerebral palsy and physically it isn't time for her (she doesn't have good control sitting) However, we really started concentrating on Jordyn when they turned 3 in July. She is 3 1/2 and still has accidents. Be patient with her she is still a baby.

I introduced my youngest to the potty chair at about 14-15 months but never pressured him to use it. I put the potty chair in the living room, where he spent most of his time playing, and allowed him to take it apart and investigate it and get comfortable with it. When he was ready, he started using it.

I would say if she has no interest its not going to work or you will pull your hair out trying to make it work.. I would do the occasional trips to the potty (after nap, before bath, etc) but I would not push her. My son was potty trained at 20 months (he started showing interest about 16 months so we slowly worked our way into it) but my daughter was a different story. she still doesnt want to always go to the potty and shes 2 1/2... when they are ready it will happen and you dont want to make it hard on either of you or she will resist. good luck

Most people don't start potty training until the child is about 2 years old. Everything I have read says you have to wait until they become interested for the training to actually work. Good Luck.

way too young. wait until about 2 or 2 and a few months for girls, closer to 3 for boys. otherwise, you will just be training yourself to take her every hour and not actually training her. waiting until she is ready will help avoid a lot of frustration for yourself. you'll know when she's ready. my girl 27 months just started going on her own about 3-6 times a day. i applaud her when she does but don't make a big deal when she doesn't. she started this at about 22 months, then lost interest, then it just came back. so please just wait, don't rush her. believe me, it's a lot easier for them to go in a diaper in public, than to run looking for a bathroom at a mall or cleaning up an accident in a mall. good luck.

15-months is a little early to expect success in most kids. But don't stop trying! There is a window of opportunity between 18 mos & 2 years for potty training. If you hit this window, training is a breeze. If you get her all freaked out about training, you may still be trying when she is 3. At this point, just make it FUN. Sit her on the potty, read books, sing songs, but don't expect much.

Good luck! Life without diapers is AWESOME!

She is to young to actually know what to do with the potty right now. I really started when my 2 boys turned two. They did not like the little potty training chairs so we just used the big potty, also going back and forth from pull up to underwear just confused them so while we were at home they always wore underwear and if (and when) they had an accident I never got on to them( they really dont know better) I just said next time tell mommy. I also took them ever so often even if they said they didnt have to go, and I gave hot wheels as a prize after every time they actually used the potty. They were fully potty trained in 1 month.

I agree with the others. 15 months is too early. I started with my kids between 2 1/2 and 3 years. My son would pee for months but would not poop on the potty. he kept telling me he would do it when he was 3. So shortly after his third bday, i threw alway the pull-ups and put him in underwear. We had to stay home for a few days but he was completely trained in a week. About 3 months before my daughter's 3rd birthday, I noticed she had a radh between her legs where the diaper was rubbing. She had been dry in the morning for a long time so I put underwear on her at night to give the rash a chance to heal. After that, she didn't want to go back to diapers. She potty-trained in reverse (night at first and then during the day). She took about 10-14 days to train but was completely trained months earlier than my son had been. When they are truly ready, you will know it and it will be relatively easy (at least in my experience). Hope this helps.

I have a 16 month old, I have tried to sit him on the potty. Sometimes he does want to others it is that he wants to sit on the "big" potty instead of the potty chair. He usually does okay. I just ask him if he needs to go potty when I see the "face" and we run to the potty, I take off his diaper, and sit him on the potty. But usually it is that I see him looking like he is finished and he is really not. I have almost caught him a couple of times, but I usually sit him on the potty and he doesn't do anything and then I take him off and that is when he goes. Good Luck! But I have heard that if the child doesn't seem ready then don't push.

If she's not interested yet then she's not ready. She is very young and I have rarely seen kids that young interested in the potty, other than throwing things in it. I'd wait a little longer and start reading her books like. One Upon an Potty."

Wait until your daughter shows EXTREME interest before going gung-ho with her on the potty. Sitting and actually using the potty can quickly become an issue with most kids. Definitely introduce it and let her sit on it if she wants, but wait until she REALLY is interested and in my experience, potty training will be a breeze! (Of course, I've never potty trained a BOY!!! LOL!!!)
