My daughter is 15 months with 8 teeth and I just noiced that the back ones are coming out. I have brushing her teeth or shall I say gums since she was 5 months old. Now that she has teeth I have upgraded to a "big girl" toothbrush but still using the baby or infant toothpast. It was not till 2 weeks ago that I noticed that her breath started to smell when she woke up and throughout the day. I can brush them 3 or 4 times a day and it will not go away. I brush her teeth, rubb her gums and I even get as much as her tounge that she will allow me to. I thought it was her tounge so I started brushing that more, but now Im just thinking that the infant toothpast is just not doing the job. I will take any suggestions. Thank you.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you every for all the help but I got to the root of the problem. My daughter goes to see her father every other week or sometimes more and when she was going over there I of course send everything she will need and then some. I noticed that one her toothpast was not opened for the past 2 visits. I just thought that he had one @ his house. So I asked him for the next visit what I should pack hoping to lighten up the load. He said pack everything except baby food, body wash, cups and lotion. I asked him what about her toothbrush and toothpaste do you have that too. He said no I dont so I asked him then why is it that he has not used what I sent him. He said he didnt know we were suppose to be brushing her teeth. OH MY GOODNESS and he is neat freak!!!! So now that he is brushing her teeth and tounge we now a beautiful little girl with her baby breath again. DONT YOU LOVE IT!

If she is drinking/eating a lot of juice, fruit or sugary things it can cause the teeth to rot and bad breath. Also, if she is going to bed/nap with a bottle of milk or juice (anything other than water) and falling asleep with the bottle in her mouth, then the liquid is basically sitting there and fermenting in her mouth. That could definately cause bad breath. If it's not something simple like this, I would try a dentist. But if she is still swallowing the toothpaste (which I imagine she is at only 15 months) ask the dentist before upgrading from the toddler kind.

She may have some type of infection somewhere, i would talk to her pedi or ask her dentist about it (pedi first though). As far as the toothpaste i will tell you what my kids dentist told me, since you are not able to use the "big kids" toothpaste because of the floride yet until she can learn to spit it all out and not swallow anything while you are brushing, the baby or toddler toothpaste without the floride, just wasting money. Their dentist told me that i could just brush his teeth with water, because all that is is gel flavoring. Just passing that on, he said that but the baby (now 18 months) likes the toothpaste everynow and then. Hope this helps ya.

Hello T.!
I have always been told by my dentist that if you brush your teeth and tounge and you still have bad breath in the morning, it is due to lack of water. So me and the kids drink more water and no more bad breath! It's amazing! Hope this helps.

It could be something that she is eating. Bad breath is usually caused by something going on within. My kids get very bad breath when they are sick, and especially when they are constipated.

She might be drinking to much milk before bed or during the day. My son is 14 months and he has bad breath when I don't let him drink enough water thur out the day. Kids need a lot of water and even though you are brushing a lot maybe she might just need alittle water, you know when us as adults our mouth gets dry it causes your breath to smell.

I'd check with your pedi for an infection too. Sinus issues frequently cause bad breath in infants.

My son had extremely bad breath when he was small. It was due to the fact that he had asthma and would have a certain amount of acid reflux in his sleep. If your child is a snorer this could be a first sign and if your child has allergies that are medicated you might follow up with and ENT for assistance.

Once he reached the age of about 3 we had him start using a mouth rinse like Act to help and we cut down on his milk intake.

It is also possible that her diet is causing this issue. I wish you the best on this.

Keep in mind not to switch her to adult toothpaste until the dentist lets you know as too much flouride can actually cause permanent white spots on her teeth and can actually be toxic.

This is going to sound strange, but maybe baby has put something in her nose. You might want to get that checked out by a doctor.
