I need advice about nail bitting. My 15 month old has started to bite her finger nails all the time. I thought she was chewing her fingers due to teething but noticed she is actually bitting her finger nails, I can hear it. I try to stop it but she doesnt stop. I don't want to get mad at her for it. Are there any suggestions out there to help this I dontt want it to become a habit.

I would try to keep them trimmed and filed (trim every few days and file every night) so there is nothing to chew, and wash her hands frequently. Unfortunately, she might be a nail biter (my husband is and always has been--nasty!). If you minimize what she can bite and offer her teething and biting toys, she might cut back. Good luck! (And you're right--no reason to get mad at her at that age. Try pulling her nails out of her mouth and telling her "yucky" and putting something else in her hands.)

Your daughter sounds very young to be biting her nails, so what I am going to suggest is really for an older child. However, I don't remember the brand name, but at the drug store you can buy a little bottle (nail-polish size, with little brush inside) of this hot-tasting-liquid. Apply to the tips of your daughter's nails just like ordinary nail-polish, and let it dry. When she attempts to bite her nails it will not taste good on her tongue, which should stop her from biting her nails. You might want to apply it to her nails when she is asleep. Make sure you have water handy...so she can rinse her mouth after she would try to bite her nails!

There are anti-nail biting products and anti-thumb-sucking products that you paint onto the kids fingernails, it tastes AWFUL, and they will hate it to much that if you use it consistently over some time it will definitely break the habit! Sally Hansen Nail Biter is one product, I forget which brand makes the product to stop thumb sucking. Both of these will work great, but don't just put it on one day, put it on EVERY DAY consistently for about a month. During that time child will find other ways to soothe him/herself! Good luck!

We are having the same problem with our 25 month old boy. He also started at 15 months to bite his teeth. The doctor suggested putting the stuff they sell for grownups - in the "nail" section of the drug store to stop biting nails. It works - but you have to keep putting it on.
