15 Month Old with Very Frequent Bms

My son is 15 months old. Last Friday he went the Dr. for his 15 check-up. All was good and he got his MMR vaccine. The next day he had about 6 BMs which is very unusual for him. They were all mushy, not formed, but not watery like diarhea either (sorry, I know it's gross). I had let him eat too many blueberries and watermelon so I just thought it was that and fed him bland foods the next day. He seemed fine - only one BM which was still mushy. Then Monday morning he woke up with a poopy diaper which is also unusual for him and then had 6 again at daycare. They said it wasn't diarhea or else they would have called me. The rest of week he seemed to be OK. His only BMs were at daycare and it didn't seem to be an unusual amount. On Friday he did have one diarhea at daycare late in the day. He didn't have it again that day and they yesterday he was home with us again with frequent BMs and the last one he had at night was watery. What could this be? Did the MMR shot effect him? He didn't have any other side effects. I'm usually worried about constipation with him and just two weeks ago when we were on vacation he had an issue with it now it seems gone completely the other way. He has had a runny nose too. Could it be a virus? Nobody else has gotten any kind of stomach bug and it's not constant diarhea like you usually see with a stomach virus. Could it be a dairy allery/intolerance? Would it come on this suddenly? I'm going to call the Dr. tomorrow but I have a feeling that they are going to tell me that if he feels fine (which he does, his mood had been great) then not to worry. Thanks ladies!

What can I do next?

Amy S is exactly right.
The MMR vaccine uses live viruses (all 3 of the components are living instead of dead or inactivated). So the risk of adverse reactions is substantially greater than with many of the other vaccines.

You are, believe it or not, LEGALLY required to report ANY and ALL adverse reactions (or even possible reactions) to VAERS (Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System). There's a link to it through NVIC (National Vaccine Information Center) http://www.nvic.org/

In the meantime, starting him on a good quality probiotic would be a really good idea & trying to minimize any and all artificial foods, including food dye, artificial flavorings, sugar, etc....

Hope he gets better soon! Good luck!

Call the doctor and ask if this is a normal reaction to the vaccination. You could also try googling it.

There are several things it could be as already suggested: something he is eating, teething, etc. But it's best to talk directly to the doctor.

All 3 of my girls had BM issues after they got their shots. He could be reacting to them. Or it could be that he's eating too many fruits, which have that type of reaction in anyone. Another issue could be he's teething. Also, he could have a bit of a tummy bug. I would call the Dr. later to see if this is cause for concern or if it's something you should be expecting. Good luck!

It could be the shot or he could have a virus. Sometimes hard to tell. May be he was backed up from what you said and may be some how cleaned out his colon between the fruits and the shot. Sometimes when my son has gotten teeth he has gotten diarreha or the poop your described. He could also have allergies. I know we are dealing with that right now at home. Definantly call the doctors office to make sure you could not be something else. good luck

I've heard that one of the main reasons the researchers (who have now been discredited) originally linked MMR with autism is that they found a bug that they thought colinated the gut after the MMR and in some kids they thought it caused a chain reaction which can cause autism.

I never know what to think about all of this myself, but doctors rarely want to admit any link with the MMR at all for anything, in case it puts people off having it...

If you are lucky enough to have a good doctor, then they might be able to have a productive discussion with you about what they know from reliable research and what is hearsay etc... doesn't always mean there's nothing to rumors, but just that they can't always be substantiated.

Personally I would imagine since you saw such a sudden change in his bowel habits immediately after the MMR, its probably linked to that. Its common as far as I'm aware, and probably won't amount to anything serious. Just to help out his gut (whenever its a bit upset by anything), you could make sure he gets enough 'good bacteria' in his gut - give him live yogurt etc as long as he's good with milk, and/or probiotic supplements.

My son has always had gut problems of one sort or other, but is fine developmentally - I just try to manage it with a healthy diet and with probiotics.

try also searching on youtube for different vaccine related reports. It could be vaccine related or it could be nothing. If you start noticing any development losses contact your physician immediately

Backing up Abbie and Amy and the other moms here who can also read between the lines, and verifying the truth of what Abbie is saying: yes, they DO use LIVE viruses.
Vaccinations - like all other drugs and medication - are never 100% safe for everyone, there's always a high chance of anyone having some kind of particular reaction to it, and this could be your son's reaction.
When I was given my Hep B vaccine at ten-years-old, I "inexplicably and suddenly" became an insomniac for the next several months and had to see a specialist to help me be able to sleep again.
Once my husband was "required" to have a flu shot if he wanted to continue working where he was, but he refused. They didn't fire him, but he and the only other person to NOT get the jab were the only two people in the office that DIDN'T get the flu that year.

I have noticed that when my daughter eats blueberries, she also has more BMs than normal, and it seems to last for a while. I really wouldn't worry about it much unless your son is acting like something is bothering him.

Hi, Just wanted to mention that when my daughter's bm's change the way you have mentioned along with a runny nose, almost always we can expect a tooth or two to pop through.
Good Luck :)

We've been going through this too-- in our case, it is just a case of too much summer fruit. Blueberries are the worst culprit, and it can take my son 5-7 days to get back to normal poops after blueberries. I'd load him up on bananas and applesauce, make sure he's getting enough fluids. And no more blueberries! :-)

Diarrhea is not a known side effect of the MMR vaccine. (Just, FYI, I have a doctorate in public health and used to work at the CDC, so you can judge my credibility to talk about vaccines as you like). MMR sheet here: http://cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/vis/downloads/vis-mmr.pdf

Could he have developed a food allergy? My 21-month old son has developed an allergy to sesame, which I discovered after he suddenly began having GI problems to hummus. Good luck!

Definitely sounds like a food intolerance to me...maybe you can cut back on the dairy and start a food journal.
Lots of Luck!

The negative effects of an MMR is a hot and highly debated topic so be prepared for all sides in this discussion.

I will tell you what I know based on my experience with my children....and two years of research I have done for MY kids.

It is not uncommon for children to run fevers, have diarrhea, moodiness, etc. after shots.

BUT

the MMR seems to be one that many children do have a higher level of difficulty with. My children did not do well with the MMR. One of my children lost the ability to self-feed after the MMR and began showing signs of Autism specifically after the shot. I have known children to lose their speech, regress in gross motor and fine motor skills immediately after the MMR.

I'm not trying to frighten you but it is absolutely possible that the symptoms you are seeing fall into the basic category of MMR difficulty at some level.

What I have learned over the years is how to react AFTER the vaccinations. Things you can do. I need to say I am not a doctor of any sort or homeopath...just a mom who has needed to do damage control. So take my "advice" as mom's advice and not medical.

#1. When you do baths, add some epsom salts. Start with a small amount (1/4 cup) and let him soak in it. Epsom salts are great for several reasons. It is a natural chelator...so it helps the body rid itself of everyday environmental and food toxins...so adding that in will help him to pull out the vaccine toxins a little at a time. Epsom salts are also a great source of magnesium which is "natures calming mineral". Great for moods and relaxation.

#2. I'm not sure about his diet but have him eat/drink as clean as you can for a while. Reduce the sweets and preservatives as much as you can and increase his fluids.

#3. Find a way to add in extra acidophylus to his diet. You can do that through yogurt or over the counter acidophylus. One brand that Walmart carries has a sippy straw filled with it...and since it has no taste, the kids sip it down without knowing. I do, however, recommend that if you really are digging in for healing....to buy yours from www.kirkmanlabs.com because not all acidophylus is created equal. But any is better than none.

#4. Try to eliminate food dyes. It is very hard but food dyes contain toxins our STRONG adult bodies aren't able to chelate out....a young child in a "compromised" state (so to speak) will be harder hit by the effects of the food gunk. I'm not an extremist...but once I learned that food dyes are derivatatives of coal tar, petroleum and/or coloring from dead bugs....it was a no brainer for me to remove them permanently. BUT if you are able to just reduce or eliminate temporarily, it would still be extremely beneficial for this time of healing.

I wish you and baby well. God Bless.
