Milk is the number one allergen so it isn't neccessary for a child to drink it. You got some good advice from the others.

I don't know why Americans still think the only way to get calcium is thru milk or dairy! You need to google "foods with calcium" ! Milk isn't really meant for human consumption past the breastfeeding years (between newborn and 6 years old)... and that's breastmilk. We force our children to drink synthetic cows milk - if breastmilk isn't given - and force our kids to drink cows milk as a staple. Mammals aren't supposed to have so much milk, especially from another species.

Look into other ways to get calcium into his diet, there are plenty other foods who have a great source of calcium. Don't worry about his lack of interest in cow's milk. At 31 y/o, I STILL will never drink a glass of milk and always refused it as a child. I use milk only for cereal, recipes and the very occasional chocolate milk. My 5 y/o only has milk at lunch time because her school and the entire school system nation wide EXPECT children to drink milk at lunch. Any other time, my daughter will have watered down juice or water.

Leafy green veggies! Kids don't actually NEED dairy to be healthy. For a long time neither of my kids could have dairy (it made them constipated lol), so they had spinach, kale, broccoli, OJ fortified with calcium, etc. Even now that they're older neither child really loves milk, yet they are both super healthy. Just make sure you have as many colors on his plate as possible - he will get all the vitamins he needs. Also in order to absorb calcium, he needs vitamin D. Since you live in Southern CA, that's easy! Just go outside in the sunshine a half hour a day and he will get enough vit D.

I agree with everything posted here (except to give him cheese - don't). Diary is one of the biggest marketing lies and a body does not need it nor should we have most of it out there. If I were to do any dairy, with the research that I have done it would only be raw milk from a very reputable source. Lots of other ways, better ways to get it.

My daughter did not like certain things as a child and it turned out when we got her tested later that she was allergic to them...

Other things to do your research on and not believe the media and Pharma (which doctors are paid by): vaccines. The AAP recommended schedule of shots for children is too many, too soon. Here are sites and books that I always recommend for people to start their research:

My daughter has a milk and egg alergie and gets all the calcium she needs from the foods she eats. many foods are fortified with calcium these days and if your son does not shy from his leafy green vegetables you shouldn't have a problem. My daughter loves soy and tofu and get the majority of her calcium from those foods.

If you have a picky eater try a suppliment. They have chewables for children.

Hey Q.,
I just talked to my doctor about the same thing as our little guy has a milk sensitivity. She told me that there are lots of foods that contain calcium such as broccoli, kale, and even sesame seeds. What I have been doing is making smoothies with our vitamix with raw vegetables and fruits and there fore he gets all the nutrient content from the things I put in it.
Another option is a calcium supplement for babies, which is also available at any health food store.
Rice milk has some calcium in it, but it's only 30% of the recommended daily allowance.

The reason for 'whole' milk... is that a child up until about 2 years old, needs the 'milk fats' because it is an important nutrient for brain development and growth.... in a Toddler.
It is not just about the calcium.
You can ask your Pediatrician, for alternatives to cow's milk... there is also Goat's milk, Almond milk etc.

If for calcium, other things like yogurt have it.
Also just ask your Ped, how much milk a child this age needs.....

Also, if for calcium, you can try kids' calcium vitamins/gummies.

Hi Q.---I agree with the others. Cows milk is NOT a health food for humans. Please go to www.pcrm.org and put dairy in the search box. You can also find some interesting info at www.notmilk.com.

There is a lot of calcium in leafy green veggies, broccoli, kale and bok choy. Sesame seeds are a good source as are legumes. So hummus would also be an excellent source of calcium.

Keep offering him a lot of different kinds of foods and he will get the balance of nutrition that he needs. Be well. D.

Do your due diligence. My children are 15 and 11 and there is no milk, cows, goats NOTHING in this house, hasn't been for years.

There is a myth about how much calcium is really in dairy product AND if the calcium can actually be absorbed.

What about other natural foods that offer calcium? http://www.citracal.com/calcium/foods/vegetables.aspx (please not I DO NOT support medicinal supplements - only natural ones)

PLEASE EDUCATE YOURSELF. Things are not as they seem.

My daughter is almost 19mo and has probably only had 4 oz of milk to drink in her entire life. My pediatrician said it isn't a big deal. She (my doctor) said just be mindful that she's getting enough vitamin A and D (which milk is fortified with). So many other things are fortified with vitamins these days that it isn't difficult. I do cook with a lot of butter and whole milk so I know she is getting it that way.
When my son was little he would only drink milk if it was in a pink sippy cup at his friend's house--kids can be quirky so keep trying to find what your son likes but don't get too worried.
