16 Month Old AM Nap Can't I Drop It Yet?

I am in need of dropping my 16m old son's morning nap due to my older son's school schedule and wanting to stay out after drop off and run errands. However, he still loves his am nap. My goal would be for him to consolidate those hours slept in the AM to his afternoon nap but scared he will be so overly tired that he won't sleep well. I can't remember when my 3 year old gave up his naps so any ideas or similar situations out there of some sort of a time line when children give up their AM naps?

What can I do next?

My son gave his up at 15mo. My daughter gave hers up at 10mo (yes, way too early, but it all worked out fine). After dropping their am naps, both of my kids wound up taking one long afternoon nap, approx. 1-4pm. My daughter's started out at 2 hours, but more recently (she's 21 mo. now) it's been 3 hours. You can try it & see how it works. I think he'll adjust b/c he seems to be in the right time frame for dropping it....however, if he is sleeping well at night & napping well during the day as it is, I personally would be afraid to mess with it b/c as you insinuated, it could inadvertently affect his nighttime sleep. I guess you have to decide how important it is to have the free time to run errands now vs. in a couple months or so.

My son gave up his afternoon nap at 16m but kept the a.m. one.
My hubby wanted me to switch it to an p.m. nap.
Have you ever tried swimming upstream?
I tried it twice and figured out my son's body knew better I did when it was tired so I let it be.
So I get out of the house early when my stepdaughter gets on the bus(you do too if it allows), come home for his nap then go out again if necessary.
This makes for a happy and well rested baby. I say work around your son's schedule instead of trying to fight it. Be creative.

my 1 yr old takes an AM nap but doesn't always (meaning only if I'm lucky) will take a pm nap. I really don't think you should make him give it up, it should be when he is ready (like when he refuses to fall asleep and just plays in his crib)

Well, my 2nd child, my son was a real regular napper and ONLY napped at home, not in transit. He napped at least 2 hours, and still does.

What I did was, since I had an older child in school too is this:
I would drop off my daughter at school.
THEN run my errands. Since the stores I needed to go to were all open very early.
THEN me and my son came home. Then he napped.... and finished his nap, BEFORE I had to then leave the house again, to pick up my daughter from school in the afternoon.
THEN afterschool, we came home. Then my son took his afternoon nap.
And my daughter would sometimes nap too. After her homework.

My son, for the first year until his 2nd year, took 3 naps a day. Then, from the 2nd year to the 3rd year, took 2 naps a day. Then from the 3rd year, took 1 nap a day.
And now, he recently made 4 years old, and he still naps, once a day... typically in the afternoon after my daughter comes home from school.
Without naps, my son, does not last all day and gets VERY fussy.

all the best,
Susan
