16 Month Old on Oxygen

My youngest of 4, Joseph, has had frequent pneumonias and respiratory infections since he was born. Now he has been on oxygen for several weeks after either aspirating or having a reaction to anasthesia during day surgery, He is beginning to become more active which is a wonderful thing, except that he still has to be on his pulse ox monitor and oxygen even when he is playing. Does anyone have tips on how to keep his oxygen on while he is moving around? We have tried tape, cloth tape, and bandaids but they all seem to only work for a couple hours and leave his poor little cheeks irritated and red. He has very sensitive skin anyway, but I know there has to be a better idea out there. Thanks for your help!

What can I do next?

Hi J.-

Sorry to hear of the trouble with your little one! Call your medical supply company...They make these little clear 'stickers'...circle shaped...with a clear sticky 'flap' that you can run the canula tubing thru. I cannot remember what it is called, but my description will help...I hope. The adhesive did not seem to bother my daughters cheeks. They stay on longer...and they used to also have a gentle adhesive remover as well...or a good 'soak' in the bath...

If he needs a pediatric mask...they make really cute ones with dinasaurs (sp?) and things...could ask about that too.

This is years ago for me...BUT I remember...

Best Luck!

I'm in Children's right now with my 8yo on O2 for only the past few days... and I have to tell ya... I'm coming durn close to wanting to SUPERGLUE the mask on him.

Seriously, though, in the morning I'm going to ask about using spirit gum (less strong than superglue and more easily removed).

If not, I'm going to alter the mask to use his snowboard goggle band... which is about 2 inches wide. It does NOT slide around like the thin straps on his mask, and is about a gazillion times more comfy, and is adjustable. I think about half our problem is the thin straps on the mask that keep moving about.

For the o2 sat monitor... we have the wire taped a couple times (finger point, small stretchy tape, on top with wide stretchy semi adhesive bandage -about an inch wide, as opposed to the 1/4 inch tape-, and then on his wrist with 2 inch wide stretchy semi adhesive bandage. When he's allowed more mobility, it'll be taped again just below his elbow / right before the connection.

Please read everything you can on vaccines.

I had a friend who had a child with the same respiratory problems and they finally connected to the vaccines . He was allergic to them! Her doctor would tell her she was wrong but after many many months of research and finding the right doctor, that was exactly what it was!

There is a product called Tegaderm, it's sold in a lot of pharmacys, that is a transperant dressing. If you get the 4x4 in size you can cut them in half to tape the canula tubing to the sides of his face. They work a lot like the circles mentioned by the previous poster, but they cover a little more area on the face and resist pulling more. I am a NICU nurse and we do this with our more active bigger babies that like to pull their canulas off when they only have the circles. I hope this helps.

What about a hat or a headband to hold around the ears? God bless you for going through this. My eldest was plagued with pneumonia but we were blessed to be able to keep her fairly healthy with nebs alone.
