16 Month Old Son Slept All Day Yesterday? Is Something Wrong?

Hi moms,

I had a quick question. My 16 month old usually very active son slept almost all day yesterday. He was probably up about 4 hours totoal. He would just come and lay down and go right back to sleep. He also didn't eat much yesterday, probably because he wasn't up enough to eat too much. He's never done anything like this before so I wanted to know if any other moms have experienced this. When he WAS up yesterday, he did play and act like his normal self. He is just getting over a cold so I don't know if that may have just drained him or what? But I'm concerned.

What can I do next?

Hi T.,
for my son 23 months now, lots of sleep and lack of appetite means a cold, or stomach virus is about to appear. Sometimes it happens during teething. We just finished a bout of Hand, Foot and Mouth desease that was running through daycare and he had these same type of systoms. If it continues for another day or so, I would contact his Dr.

There is also a virus going around right now called Roseola. My son had it last weekend....it started on Thurs with him sleeping more than normal (with a little running nose too) and not eating and by friday morning he was running a low grade temp that just kept going up all weekend and finally broke on Monday. From Thursday to about wed of the next week he didnt eat much and slept a bunch. There are no symptoms really besides a high fever (when he was awake even with a high temp he was playing like normal)until after the fever breaks whichs takes anywhere from 3-4 days....then they break out in a rash for a couple days. It is not something they keep kids out daycare for b/c its a weak virus but it is contageous. All I was told to do with his fever was give him any liquid that he would drink (not milk) and luke warm baths when the fever spiked to bring it back down. It was getting up to 103+. also alternate tylenol and motrin every 4hrs. Several babies have had it recently so watch for the temp. to spike. There is no telling what is wrong but it sounds like he is fighting something. Good luck.

Time will tell, Mom. Could be he didn't sleep well during the night, if he's been stuffy. Could be his cold has gone into a sinus or ear infection, could be he's teething. It's obvious that something is going on...but not necessarily anything urgent. Just watch him closely, as you are doing, check him for fever, watch his BMs, and see if the nasal drainage turns yellow or green. Now, if he continues this for several days, you might want to have him checked anyway...in case of anemia...but that is so rare. This is just one of those little whispers to keep an eye out. He may be back to his old self by today.

Your mother's instinct is kicking in.

Good luck and God bless...

My daughter did this about a month ago too. She was just getting over a small cold but then come sunday her church shoes and clothes all of a sudden where too small and and now I have to buy more shirts cause all hers look like mid drifts now! haha! So it could be one of those 2 things, but like the other moms said I'd just keep and eye out for other symptoms. Come 5 or 6 that night she was back to normal and even slept all night which is unusual for her. Good luck!

T.,

My kids go through periods where they eat, eat & eat. And then the next week, they sleep, sleep, & sleep some more. I can remeber at least a dozen times when I would put them down for their afternoon nap and they would not wake up until the next morning. I would not worry!!

Hope that helps,
H.

Sounds like what my son does when he's coming down with a virus. Not eating is ok, but you shouldn't let him go all day without drinking something (water, gatorade, pedialyte). One mom mentioned Roseola -- we went through that a few months ago. Also hand-foot-and-mouth, or the related virus called herpangina (which sounds bad, but it's the same as hand, foot, mouth, only it's just in their mouth/throat) cause similar problems -- not wanting to eat, lots of sleeping. Just to be safe, I would start pushing fluids. If he does have a virus and gets too dehydrated (no tears, no wet diaper after 8 hours or so, limp/lethargic, unable to sit up...) you'll have to go to the hospital for an IV -- not fun.
Good luck! Hope it's just a growth spurt.

Because of fighting off an infection or experiencing a growth spurt are the only times my boys have ever just slept the day away... just watch for symptoms of a cold or something... otherwise, I'd just chock it up to growth spurt. :)
