I've been using an organic cherry bark blend for his cough and it wasn't really working, and now i'm using a syrup called Sambucol that has elderberry, echinacea and propolis....which is helping him get through the night. I don't believe in rushing to the hospital and i never was big into the over the counter medicines for infants they finally pulled off the shelves..so i'm looking for as many organic, healthy alternatives for taking care of my little one while we adjust to this cold weather!!

What can I do next?

I have also heard about the vapor rub on your feet. Be careful if your child has asthma or allergies though. I was using the vapor bath liquid until my doctor told me that it can actully restict the airways more if a child has asthma or bad allergies. A humidifier has worked well for us. It helps the lungs stay moisturized so the kids and adults are less suseptible to viruses and bacteria. It's not actually the cold weather that brings on the cold and flu season, but the dry stale indoor air that dries out the lungs and make us more vulnerable. Fresh air, even in the winter is healthy for the body. Just make sure you wash out the vaporizer with distilled vinager a few times a week to keep bacteria from building and getting spread through the house. Hope that helps!

When my little ones have a cough I rub vicks on their feet and put socks on them before bed. It really helps. They did a study on it in Canada. Google it if you want to read about the study. Let me know if it works for you. I even do it when I have a cough!

Dear J.,

I too went thru this with my children too and it was very difficult to find an alternative to over the counter product. I never did find anything that worked well for that except for Wally's ear for ear infections. I want to introduce you to a botanical product line called, Arbonne International. There website is www.Arbonne.com. I have been selling product for two years now and have never been as impressed with anything before because it actually works! I would be delighted to send you a sample if you would like of their baby product but that is for skin care! It is the best I have seen and have several personal testimonials on most of their product.

If you review their web page, and want to place an order, please contact me direct for samples and a 35% discount.

You can reach me at ____@____.com for further information or for a free sample.

I wish you the best.

The Vicks trick does help.

A vaporizier running in the room at night is good as well. Just make sure they can't get to it and remove it during the day.

I also use homeopathic meds. There is a wonderful book called Child Health Guide by Dr. Randall Neustaeder (or something like that) that is wonderful. He also has a website at www.cure-guide.com

One thing I alt. between that works is a homepathic med from Newtons 4 Kids. There is one for allergies, and one for sniffles. I alt. bewteen both of these, and it helps my children when coughing and runny noses.

Another good item is ALC (Advantage Liquid Concentrate) by Wisdom of the Ages. It contains Jasmine tea extract, Green Tea extrat and Grapefruit (Citrus) see extract. You more than likely will have to buy that online (Google them to find them).

I give my children, almost daily, Carlson brand lemon flavored Cod Liver Oil. I notice a huge difference in their recovery time when taking this and when not.

While having a cough like this, cut down (or avoid all if you can) on any dairy they might be consuming...like milk or yogurt. If you are breastfeeding, don't worry about that.

Hi I have never tried this remedy myself but my neighbor and my brother said they have both used it and it works wonders. I got an email from a nurse saying to slather Vicks Vapo-rub on the child's feet and cover them with socks at night and it will ease the cough and help congestion. I always forget to buy it while I'm at the store but, my neighbor said she has been doing this for ten years even for herself and husband and it's great. She told her child's DR. about it and he has been passing the info on to all of his patients. Worth a try it might be stinky but it can't hurt them any :)
