I am kind of baffled, my 16 month old has been having ongoing diarrehea for the past 3 weeks. We have done stool test through the doctors and everything came back negative which is good but still having the problem. Then they said to take her off all milk and cheese, she has been off all of it for over a week and is still having the problem, they thought maybe she was lactose intolerant. I don't think that is the case, she is still having the problem. Not sure what to do? Is it a possibility that she might be getting in her molars? She only has 8 teeth 4 on top and 4 on bottom and they all came in with no problem but heard molars can been rough? Does anyone have any suggestions for me? She was in the Hospital this past April with the rotovirus, maybe it came back? She isn't having any pain that she is showing me besides the sore bottom, she isn't dehydrated. She acts like a normal 1 year old kid, laughing and playing and being totally happy everyday.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Wanted to thank everyone for their advice. I went back to the braty diet for 4 days and added in the acidophilis for infants and after 4 days we were back to regular diapers and we are still good. Thanks for everything.

My little guy has also had the rotovirus. He tends to be very loose if I give him too much fruit. His stool is very sensitive to what he eats. But you have to give it a few weeks.

I think you would know if it was Rotavirus, since she has had it once--the diarrhea has a very distince odor, as I am sure you remember! Maybe it is something called something called "toddler diarrhea". Check here:

During serious teething with both of my kids they have very loose and wet stools. I honestly believe that is the case when kids teeth and have excess slobber. Since you have ruled out anything medical, make sure she is hydrated and if it seems ultra runny I would talk to your Dr again. Rotovirus I think is a one time thing, I don't think it is reoccuring or they can get it again but it doesn't hurt to check it out on the internet and look it up either. She should have other signs too if that was it.
Like I said both of my kids went through loose stools with teething and it lasted until all the major teeth came in.
Since you removed dairy too and that didn't help you can probably bring that back into her diet. Cheese or whole grains can help solidify stools too.

Hi K. - my lil guy is exactly the same - he almost always has soft stools/diarrhea. For him, its really a diet thing - he loves fruits and veggies and juices.

We had all the testing done too. One thing to note - if the stools look frothy or if you've noticed a growth plateau, you may talk to your doc about food intolerances to gluten, etc.

My son was not "allergic" but apple juice caused the same problem for him. If yours drinks a lot of juice,(I think it's the sugar) that could be the problem. Try to get her to drink just water.

Not sure if the doctor mentioned that it could be a dairy allergy, which would not be solved entirely by just eliminating milk and cheese. Have a friend who has eliminated all dairy, and that solved her son's problems (he is breastfeeding). This is the website she found for symptoms: www.kidshealth.org/parent/medical/allergies/milk_allergy.... You can also check this website for more information on milk allergies: www.kellymom.com. Hope this helps.

Hang in there it can take over 2 weeks to get rid of symptoms of food allergies. Then start asking lots of questions. Sore bottom and loose stools can indicate silent reflux occasionally. But I wouldn't make any other changes for another week. My daughter went through something similar around the same time. Turns out she can only tolerate cultured milk (cheese and yogurt, no milk, not even Lactaid). Plus like you said yourself she is only 16 months and is acting normal

Hang in there you will figure it out eventually!

Hi K.,
Has she had many rounds of antibiotics? Or even one round? If so, get her on a probiotic. Antibitoic in it's literal term means "against life" Probiotic means "for Life". Antibiotics are made of mold and fungus and they can seriously alter the normal bowel flora which helps regulate diahrrea and constipation problems. I am a beleiver in this because after a colonoscopy at the age of 29 I caught a severe bacterial infection from unclean equipment at the hospital and ended up on an antibiotic...100 pills in 10 days. So my doc reccommended a probiotic called "FLORASTOR" and not only did it help me get well from the infection, it fixed every stomanch problem I had had for 29 years and that is the truth. It does come in a childrens formula but you'll have to go to a pharmacy and have them special order it for you. I use walgreens. Both of my children (now 3 1/2 and 1 1/2) have been on one since 6 mos old and have never had a stomach bug. (Knock on wood!!)90% of our immune system is in our gut so it is very beneficial for everyone to be on and it cannot hurt you. I hope this info helps. Best of luck for a full recovery.

Is she on whole milk? My son is lactose intolerant and there were a few more signs than diahrrea. He had a sour stomach all the time, and would vomit every 3-5 days for about 12 hours that day. We switched him to a combination of lactose free whole milk and the Silk soy milk with DHA and Omega 3 fatty acids. He is also intolerant to a protein in milk. We have found that the 50/50 combination of the two made a world of difference in him. We also only give him the Live Active cheeses and Stonyfield Farms O'Soy of Yo Kids yogurt. The added benefit of the cultures (as Stonyfield Farms has the most cultures in it) have greatly helped with his digestion issues. I am a huge fan of probiotics (before all the hype) and the line of yogurts Stonyfield fram has out. My daughter will help herself to the yogurt in the fridge and she is 3.

I saw that someone else recommended Jell-o water. It is great! We use the rasberry Jello because it also helps soothe the anusea he had and when the tummy bug hits. We put 1-2 tablespoons of jello in 1 cup of warm water. This home remedy was told to me by my mom, my grandma, my husdand's grandmother, and his many aunts.

I don't know if this will help, but good luck and I wish the best for you and your daughter

My daughter had regular diarrhea and it was the result of a food allergy to milk proteins AND gluten (wheat). We did have to eliminate anything with milk from her diet and all wheat. It took us a while to figure out how many things in her diet had milk. For example, we had been giving her soy yogurt, but I read the label more carefully and realized it was made with milk proteins. Once we eliminated all milk products, it took her a little over 2 weeks to start to have normal bowel movements.

Probiotics are a good idea too if she's been on regular antibiotics. They will also help her sore bottom from the diarrhea.

My son just got his molars in and had diaherrea for at least 3 weeks with it. During the day he acted normal and happy. It cleared all on its own when the teeth were in.

K.,

Try giving her a children's acidophilus. You can get this at any Vitamin Cottage or Whole Foods. They even make a powder for babies too young to chew up small pills. Regardless of whether this will stop the problem or not, it will put good bacteria back into your daughter's digestive tract. This good bacteria can easily be stripped away with bouts of diarrhea. Yogurt or Kefer is a good way to replenish this good bacteria as well.

I also have 16 month olds that went through the same thing. One of my girls was hospitalized with a rotovirus too. They gave her a lot of fluids and suggested Gatorade because they wouldn't drink pedialyte. We never stopped the milk. If the milk was the problem I think she would have been showing signs a long time ago. And with the bad diaper rash, I would let her air out on the kitchen floor. This really made a difference with my daughter. Good luck.

the docs always say that teething does not cause other probs such as diarrhea and fever but I dont believe it! everytime my daughter gets a new tooth she has a fever and diarrhea every time!!! Diarrhea can be caused by hundreds of diff things=( so tracking it down is not easy. Do you have any pets? (parasites) have you gone anywhere that where she could pick up giardia? those are 2 things that the docs dont catch right away. or it is possible that the rotavirus is not gone. those are just a few of many possibilities!

K., an old remedy for diarrhea is plain old jell-o water. Make it the regular way, but give it to your daughter in a a bottle or sippy cup. It worked for my siblings (7), and all the grandkids (35), and the great grands (I can't remember how many, but LOTS ; ) ! It actually gels the stool. It may be a different color than normal, but hey, variety in life, right? Good luck.
