Sounds like she has a pyelonephritis (a kidney infection) not just a bladder infection. May need a more powerful/different antibiotic. Good luck.
Hi, my daughter started having lower left and back pain on Friday (severe) and she thought she was on her period when she saw urine in her blood. Sat. morning she was peeing dark blood still, it definitely wasn't her period, her panties were clean and it didn't look like period blood. I took her to the hospital and they did a urine test and said she was positive for everything (I quess they meant bacteria....) and that she had a urinary tract infection and gave her antibiotic, Bactrim. Today I took her back in because her pain was soooooo bad last night she was crying and she was still urinating blood. The dr. had a cat-scan done on her to rule out kidney stones, etc. and said it came back fine. She gave her some Tylenol w/ codene and sent us on our way. The dr. told us not to worry about the blood, which I thought was strange. It is not just a little blood either. I don't know what to do, I've tried looking stuff up on the computer, but it's hard to say. Has anyone experienced anything like this or know a dr. that could give me some advice? Oh, forgot to mention, dr. said if she doesn't stop bleeding in 24-48hrs. to bring her back in for a more intense cat-scan to look more further at the tissue. PLEASE help if you have any ideas.... thank you and God bless...
Well, I took her in tonight to a different hospital because the bleeding in her urine and the pain hadn't stopped. They did another urine tests and they said the anti-biotics were working because everything looked good except there was blood in the urine. They did bloodwork and they said everything was normal. They did an ultrasound of her kidneys, pancreas (sp?) and liver and said it all looked good, plus no kidney stones in the ultrasound or cat-scan done yesterday. They didn't have a diagnosis and said it should clear up, if it doesn't in 7-10 days to take her in to get a referral to a specialist. I don't know if I can wait that long, it makes me nervous, but that is the update for now.... thanks for all the advice:)

Hi C.,
I would be camped out in the ER or at the docs office until my child got some help and pain relief. A steady flow of blood is a very dangerous sign.
Blessings....
Hi C. -
It sounds very much like your daughter had a bladder infection that has now moved up to her kidneys. Very common, and very painful.
I would strongly recommend going to another doctor. If she is losing this much blood, she is really sick. I'd be concerned that the anitbiotic is not strong enough to handle this infection.
Best,
J.
I would take her to another dr. now. Be very insistent.
The other moms have given you some good advice, with the exception of acupuncture. This is not a condition for acupuncture, sorry.
Hi C. - I am no expert on this and have not experienced this with either of my daughters - just the occasional bladder infection with a small amount of blood-tinged toilet paper after urinating. However, I definitely agree with the other moms who say GET A SECOND OPINION. Intense pain is not something to ignore, nor is the blood in urine. Also, have you tried any of the online sites where you put the symptoms and they let you know what this set of symptoms could be? I did a google search with "left lower quadrant severe pain and blood in urine" this was one of the links that came up http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/symptoms/lower_back_pain/bo... I think you should definitely research and pursue this and see what other tests should be done - I think an ultrasound at the least to see the left ovary. Also - not sure of your daughter's age but check tubal pregnancy. God bless you and your family and you do need to get to the bottom of this asap. V. G. :o)
She could have ruptured a small blood vessel somewhere in the kidney/bladder regioin. This happened to a friend who peed blood for about five or six days before it stopped. Are the docs sure it's only a UTI and not a kidney infection? UTIs are very painful. Make sure she takes her antibiotics as prescribed and does not miss a dose or stop taking them when she starts feeling better. She has to take the whole course. Also, Bactrim is definitely appropriate for UTIs, but it is always possible she will need a sronger antibiotic. If she started the Bactrim on Saturday and isn't feeling even a little better by tomorrow, I would at least call the doc and ask about the possibility of a kidney infection and/or if she might need a different antibiotic. You may also want to check with your insurance (if you have insurance) to see if you can get coverage for a second opinion and see another doc. I hope your daughter is doing better soon.
Get another opinion/go back in. It sounds like the infection is not responding to the antibiotics. Your daughter should be feeling lots better in 24 hours with the antibiotics. Could be that this bug is resistant to Bactrim. I've had UTI and never had anything like that. She might have a kidney infection or heading that way. Low back pain would point in that direction.
Maybe someone with more medical experience will have better advice. I feel for your daughter.
When my daughter was in her late teens she was hospitalized with the same symptoms. It turned out that she had cysts that were causing extreme pain and bleeding as they popped. I would have your daughter checked for cysts on both her kidneys and her ovaries. I could not believe the pain she was in. Good news was that she has not had them since. I hope you have the same results. The best of luck to you and your daughter.
Have you considered taking her to see an acupuncturist? they can help with the bleeding and the pain. If money is an issue, find out if there is an acupuncture school near by. the treatments there are much less expensive with a licensed acupuncturist and students observing.
hope your daughter feels better fast!!

Hi C.. I'm so sorry you and your daughter are going through this right now. Go see a different doctor if you don't feel good with this one. It is your right.
I have cysts on my kidneys which cause blood in my urine when they pop, and pain so bad I am rolling on the floor. Ask someone to do an ultrasound and rule out polycystic kidneys. In the meantime, I'm sure they have told you about cranberry juice to keep the kidneys in good shape. It just doesn't seem right that she needs to be sent home in such pain. I'm sure I have a red mark on my kids charts, but when I come in, I make sure they know I want something done NOW. Keep us up to date. In the meantime, I will be praying for her. The Lord does have it in His hands and I will pray for complete healing.
Don't panic. This sounds very much like the symptoms of a kidney infection that I had a few years ago. (Mine was also accompanied by an extremely high fever.) The main thing you want to be sure is that the antibiotics your daughter is taking are working. My symptoms persisted for a couple of days past starting on antibiotics before they realized that the antibiotics they had given me were not effective. They ultimately gave me a very high dose of a different antibiotic (via injection in my derrierre) and my symptoms began to subside. Also, you want to be sure that, in the future, if your daughter has any symptoms of a urinary tract or bladder infection that you get her in for treatment before it spreads to the kidneys. Keep pushing lots of fluids, especially (unsweetened) cranberry juice.
She may have kidney stones
I had something like that and it was a kidney infection and I spent the day in the ER and then weeks of anti biotics..the sickest Ive ever been. I hope she's ok. Very scary! Try lots and lots of fluids, esp cranberry juice and if she can tolerate it, the REAL stuff with just a bit of water. Hang in there!
Blood in the urine is indication of a kidney infection, as is a side/low back ache. I had a severe case of acute nephritis (kidney infection) when I was 7; spent 7 days in the hospital, dropped to 35 pounds AND still remember hearing the doctor tell my parents to arrange for someone to come in and administer "last rights". I was home bound for 12 months after that episode which was 50 years ago.
Get a second opinion! Do not wait! She should be in the care of a urologist. I have recently been referred to one on Samaritan Drive, and I really like him: Shahram Gholami, MD. There are 4 doctors in the group called Urology Associates of Silicon Valley, located 2581 Samaritan Dr, Suite 200, SJ 95124. Phone: ###-###-####. I'm not sure if this is close or far from you, nonetheless, take her to a second doctor today. I wish you and your family well and will hold you close in my thoghts and prayers.
Hi C.;
While you are doing the doctor visits trying to figure this out, please consider making your daughter tea made from coliander seeds. It is in my Healing Remedy book saying it helps with UTI's. It has always helped my now 10 year old, but I know everyone is different! Anyway, maybe you have some in your spice cabinet, just steep it. Add honey for the taste and for the anti-bacterial benifits. I do not use cranberry juice, I have not had any luck with it.
I will keep you both in my prayers.

I used to be married to a urologist. I assume you have medi-cal. I know that many urologists do not take medical and that if you have a primary care physician they may be reluctant to give you a referral to a specialist. My husband used to be annoyed that some of the general practitioners waited too long before they sent their patients to him. See if someone knows of a nice urologist in the area where you live who takes medi-cal and call his office and explain the circumstances and ask to be seen. Or ask the ones you saw at the emergency room if she has been seen by a Urologist. It sounds to me like her kidneys are involved and that might be taken care of by the antibiotics, but ask for more information and a clearer diagnosis. Good Luck!!
