Hi everyone, I got up early and tried to back track through some old postings but did not find anything. My grand daughter has had a very red and bumpy rash. I called the nurse and she said it was yeast and that I should go and buy some Lotrimin and use that. That is what I did the rash was still there at the end of the day when my daughter came to pick her up. It is still red and irritated this morning as she arrived back. I am thinking Lotrimin is not doing the job. I am going to try a baking soda bath now and add a pro-biotic to her sippy cup. Hopefully, get some wonderful ideas from all of you meantime. 19 month girl, red bumpy rash under her diaper, 5 to 6 day's it has come and gone but seems to be itchy and irritating for her, please help. (my mom has alway's said if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all) Have any of you ever heard this old saying? Like many of you she is a wise and thoughtful person.
Your friend, K. K.

Hi K.,
My Daughter had the same type of itchy rash at about 14 mos and the doctor's office suggested I create a paste of Maalox and Aquaphor lotion. It completely did the trick within a day or 2.
Good luck!

I just read an article called 'kooky cures' on msn the other day. They said that apple cider vinegar is great for dandruff because it kills yeast bacteria. I've been using it to wash my whole body since, and yesterday I got a mosquito bite. Usually I swell up and itch for days, but it went away in just a few hours. I hope this helps her out, poor baby!

Hi K.,
it looks like there are a lot of good suggestions here. the only thing that I would add, is yeast feeds on sugar, it is important right now while she has this rash that you don't give her a lot of fruit, juice or anything that has sugar, and probiotics are great. This will help support the topical treatment from a systemic approach.

My son had the same rash. We did the RX, the athlete's foot cream, various diaper creams, and finally, after about 2-3 weeks, I found the only thing that worked was the Motherlove, Diaper Cream and Thrush. That is now the only diaper cream I use and he is doing great ever since. I also give him lots of naked time. After taking off his diaper and wiping him off, he then airs out. Try not to put a diaper on damp skin, even if you have to blot with a facecloth, or fan her a bit, if you are in a hurry.

My son had a yeast infection on his butt for a very long time. It looked horribly painful so I tried the remedy my doc taught me-Desitin creamy over A&D-for diaper rash. That didn't cure it after a week. I felt silly taking him in for a diaper rash. Turns out it was a yeast infection & it took a few days to clear it up w/Nystatin cream from the doc. One day won't cure the rash, keep up w/the cream for a few days & make sure Mom & Dad are doing the same.
And thanks, Grandma for being the childcare! I wish our grandmas were so close!!

Both of my boys have had yeast infections on their bottoms... not fun! We always got the Nystatin cream from our Doctor... I think you use it three times daily and you can put their regular rash cream right over top of it. If you can't get the perscription then get something like Monistat or and over the counter yeast infection medicine. HOpe this helps! Good luck!

I like Gentle Naturals Baby Eczema Cream. It works better to prevent. You might try yogurt directly on the rash. I've heard good things for that. I hope she feels better soon! GL!

I have a 19 month old daughter as well and over the past 3-6 months I too was battling with how to get rid of an intermittent diaper rash. She had the same thing, red, bumpy and very irritating and painful. I tried everything from Monistat ( for yeast, perscribed by her doctor), to Calmoseptine ( from the pharmacy (, to Desitin, Boudreauxs Butt Paste, you name it! We questioned foods she had eaten, beverages she had drank, etc. She would off an on eat Go-gurts ( little portable snack yogurts ). then for a while she hadnt had any. Nor did she have the rash for a time. Then one day I gave her one of the Go-gurts and up popped the rash again in full force. I dont know what your grand daughter eats, but my daughter has a strange sensitivity to yogurt. Just an idea, as I was in the same boat as you were, at my wits end, just wanting to make her more comfortable!!
Good luck!

Hi K.,
If it truly is a yeast type infection then the normal diaper rash creams won't work. It will just get worse, and may even begin to bleed. I know for my boys when they got yeast type infections the only thing that cleared it up was to use Tinanctin, which is for athletes foot (also a yeast infection). The cream is expensive but it really does work.

I hope this helps your grandaughter!

Yours truly,
M. Fastrup

The Lotrimin might still work, but if it is yeast you also need to add a couple of steps in there. I have had 3 of my 4 girls with yeast rashes like that and the only way to get rid of them is by using the meds AND keeping them really, really dry. So you need to make sure that she is changed quickly and doesn't sit in the wet diapers for very long. Then while you are changing her, let her air out for a while. Before you put a new diaper on make sure that she is really dry in that area and put on more meds then the new diaper. If you can let her go without for a while, but if not take a blow dryer and use that to dry it out. The yeast loves the wet and moist areas, and if you dry it out it will die. Vinigar baths also help. Pour some vinegar into the bath and then let her sit and play while she soaks that area....just don't let her drink the water. After soaking for about 10 minutes run a fresh bath and rinse her off. Make sure that you dry it really good before diapering her too. Good luck.

Hi K.!

I recommend a good slather of a natural salve like Earth Mama Angel Baby Bottom Balm or Motherlove's Diaper Rash and Thrush. Also, keep her out of her diaper as much as possible, and getting some sun on her bum is a big plus. This, in combination with what you are doing, should take care of her rash. (and the salve's- especially the Motherlove Diaper Rash and Thrush will provide great topical relief for the itching!)

Hi K. - the Lotrimin will take longer to work than that. Maybe a few days. If it doesnt start to clear after that or gets worse, she should be seen by her doc. She might need to get a prescription like Nystatin or another kind of topical antibiotic.

Bathe her once a day. Change her diaper often and use water rather than wipes at changing time. I had good luck with just rinsing the soap out of the baby wipes. Dry the area well - maybe just play with her for a minute or two without a diaper. If you can handle a peepee mess, let her play for a while without a diaper. Apply the Lotrimin and then apply a really good smather of diaper cream. For the bad rashes I found that Triple Paste worked best.

Nystatin has an oily base so I found that if I mixed it with the diaper cream in my fingers, it worked really well.

I hope she feels better!

Hi K.,

I recommend this version of Colloidal Silver. It works wonders on yeast... we just used it on a friend of mine's 5 year old and it got rid of the condition w/in 12 hours or so. Anyway, it's worth a shot. You can get it here:

Hope this helps! Let me know if I can answer any questions or anything. ###-###-####.

That sounds just like the yeast infection my daughter had and my doctor told me to use the same medicine that you would use for an adult yeast infection. He said to apply a thin coat only on the rash and to continue to use four days after all the rash is gone. It is actually a fugal infection and it has to be completely cleared of it will come back worse. My daughter had it clear up to the middle of her back and it took two weeks to clear it up.

Good Luck
