My daughter will be turning one and I would like to get a nice cake for her birthday. Since it's only going to our family and a couple close friends and their kids, I don't need a large cake. What I would like is a larger cake for everyone and a small matching cake just for my daughter. I have been reading about these fondant cakes, and would like order one of those. Can anyone recommend a good bakery in the east valley that I can order her cake?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all the great suggestions. After several people suggesting that fondant was not a good idea for a first birthday cake, I decided to go with frosting. Maybe we will try fondant for the next cake.

I went down to Target as several suggested, but when I was ready to talk to the bakery, the kid behind the counter was very rude. When I would ask a simple question about what I wanted, he would respond like it was an inconvenience to him. Since I couldn't have the questions I wanted answered, I decided to go elsewhere. A friend of mine had told me that Albertson's had made her daughters first birthday cake. So, instead of dragging my kids down to Albertson's with the chance they couldn't do what I wanted, I called them first. Karen, the lady I spoke to, was very helpful. She listened to my requests and told me that they could do what I had in mind. When I arrived at the store, Karen had already written down my request and made a few suggestions that I had not considered. When I went to pick up the cake, I was more then pleased. It came out perfect. She had even made a tag that said happy 1st birthday, because she didn't have the room on the cake because of the design. It was the extra embellishment that made it more then perfect. They also included an free 8" cake just for my daughter that matched her big cake.

And to answer Lisa T.'s question. We technically used Safeway for my son's first birthday, but a good friend of ours is a bakery manager for Safeway, so she made it for him. Besides, ever since Safeway stopped making their own cake batter in store and having the cakes premade, I don't think they are as good.

I will post a link of the picture of the cake as soon as I download the pictures off my camera.

Well, I really don't like fondant... plus, she can't put her fingers in it! I love Robert's Catering in Chandler. It's a small bakery, but they made my wedding cake and my daughter's first birthday cake and they are abosolutly delicious! Believe it or not, Target does have some really good cakes, their carrot cake is the best (besides mine)

Hi C.. My little girl just turned one in May. We had a big party, but I didn't want the expense of a cake. So I make cupcakes! I used the confetti cupcakes and made sugar cream frosting (recipe is on the back of the powdered sugar bag), then also got some colored sprinkles to match the theme of the party. To display them, I got a cupcake holder at Party City. It was fun for me to do and everyone loved the cupcakes, especially my little girl! Good luck with everything!

Hi C.

My Son turned '1' 4 months ago and i wanted a Teddy Bear
theme which turned into a Winnie the Pooh party.
We think ALL Safeway bakeries are wonderful and do
an excellent job! i'm
not saying that just because i work at a Safeway : )
What bakery did you use for your 4 yr son when he turned one?

The BEST cakes in Arizona come from Sugarlips Bakery. They make cakes that taste delicious and can be anything you can dream up.
They cost more but believe me, once you visit their website and look at their gallery of pictures you'll be hooked. They did a 3 level retirement cake for my husband and it was incredible. They completed the cake to match the picture I had in my mind. It was the "HIT" of the party. The fondant is delicious. I would compare it to marshmallow (not as sweet, chewy texture). There is a layer of frosting under the fondant so it just adds to the flavor. Many people at the party commented on the fondant. They were surprised it tasted so good. An 8" round cake is $40.00 w/ fondant, $30.00 with icing. Cupcakes might work for you and their about $2.00 each. The customer service was awesome! It's alot for a cake but there's only ONE first birthday. Check out the webiste:
I just googled "Sugarlips Cakery". It's in the East valley.
Believe me, you won't be disappointed. Enjoy that very special day.

I don't know of any bakery, but I got my 1 year old a jumbo cupcake for $2.99 from Fry's grocery store. They custom colored it to match the theme of pink/purple. I think it works better than Fondant since the frosting was soft and she could dig her hands in. Just a thought.

There is a bakery in I think Tempe, its on Guadalupe just west of Dobson. Its called Sugarlips Cakes. I get all of my cakes and goodies from there and the prices are good. I have never had a fondant cake from there though only because I dont like fondant. Its to gummy. But their frostings are yummy!

C. - I used this lady recently for a birthday and she was awesome and I can't stop thinking about that cake. My kids are 11, 5 and 1 so I have had a lot of cakes in my day and this was the best I had ever tasted. This is her website so you can see what kind of work she does! Good luck!

To be honest with you, I wanted the same thing for my son just a month and a half ago. Someone I talked to actually recommended Target and I kind of looked at them funny. She reassured me and said that their cakes are really good! I called and talked to them and actually looked at their great selection. The other nice thing is that they made a perfect size cake for the amount of people we had which was 9 and he got his own little smasher cake as well that matched, for free!! The cake was only $25. I thought it was a bargain and we were very impressed by the quality of the cake. I will go there again for my daughter when she turns 3 in August.

There is a bakery called Sugarlips Cakery on Guadalupe and about Dobson. They do AMAZING cakes. They did my daughter's 4th birthday cake, and I got so many compliments on its appearance and taste. The owner/baker was so creative. I told her that we were doing a circus-themed party and that we were renting a big bounce house. She sketched something out for me on the spot, and again, the cake was gorgeous. Even the lettering was different than any other cake I'd ever seen. Very creative and artistic. Highly recommend them.
