2 1/2 Year Old Holds Her Poo Poo In

My daughter started out by having constipation, which made it hurt for her to have a bm, which then turned into her holding it in. I'm guessing this started about 6 months ago. I give her Miralax every morning. She only gets one cup of milk all day. I watch her intake of constipating foods and try to make sure she gets enough fruits, and limit bananas. She doesn't eat many veggies. She eats about 2 flavored benefiber tablets a day. She will still hold it in for 2-3 days at a time. Usually at day 3 I'll notice her walking on her tip toes, making a crazy face, and her tooshy is sqeezed tight. I run her to the toilet (sometimes with a fight, sometimes not) and when she goes it is HUGE, seriously ridiculously gigantic. The other day there was blood in it. I give her a reward after she's gone as an incentive to make her want to go again. I've talked to the pediatrician about it but she just tells me the same things...monitor her diet and continue the miralax and benefiber. This is obviously NOT helping. Any suggestions out there???

What can I do next?

Hello B.. I have delt with this before. My son, who is now 10 had this problem back when he was 3-4. It is horrible for them. I use this stuff called CalMag. I know it sounds funny but it is the best stuff in the world. It is calcium and magnesium. That is all that's in it. It is a powder form and you mix it in with hot water and then cool it down and drink. It does not taste good and it takes some getting use to but my son drinks in now every other day with no problem. I started him out with a little and gave him a treat when he was done and he has gotten use to it now. Calmag has many wonderful denifits. It is really good for there bones and muscles. A lot of the time what happens is, we give our kids so much calcium that they don't get enough magnesium so it doesn't do what it needs to do. In order for the calcium to work right, it has to have the magnesium to go with it. I hope that makes sence to you. There is a websit you could visit if you are interested. It is www.VitaminsThatWork.com or you can call them at 1-800-446-7462 and request information on Calmag. This stuff really does work. Good luck with it.

My daughter had that problem for a long time before someone finally explained the problem to us. Does she have a 'diaper rash" on her bottoms that hurts when she finally does poop? If so, you have got to tackle that and cure it so that she will forget about the pain (eventually). Aquaphor and bare bottoms were about the best thing to cure that problem, and it was not easy. Discuss with the pediatrician whether the amount of miralax you are giving her is enough. What is the purpose of the fiber pill? doesn't that just make the bulk bigger? talk to the dr about whether that should be continued. My daughter had to be on miralax for more than six months before she finally got regulated. The dr said the rule of thumb is that they have to be on miralax at least as long as it took them to create the bad habit (of holding it in). Our situation was like a nightmare, because it caused her to have horrible diaper rash issues to the point where she would scream when we had to clean her up, no matter how careful we were not to hurt her; she could not even sit in the tub to gently clean that way. It killed me. We finally had to resort to an enema and me staying with her 24/7 with no bottoms on so that I could immediately clean up after her until she finally got it out; the miralax helped to keep it up. Maybe you are going to have to give her an enema - discuss with dr of course - maybe there is still some up there that is being held back. good luck I really feel for you. I can tell you my daughter has no memory of that problem now six to eight months after she finally got regulated, so there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Hi B.,
My daughter began having chronic constipation at just a few weeks old. We have done everything you are doing and even had to do enemas for a time to get things moving. She was put on a couple of different prescriptions and nothing seemed to relieve our problem completely. By the time my daughter was 2 she had several severe hemorrhoids which only contributed to our problem of her not wanting to go (it hurt too much). I finally decided to try the Dannon Activia yogurt to see if that would help give her some relief. I can happily tell you that she loves getting her yogurt and we have had good regular bm ever since without needing any other medications. Our pediatrician was shocked but did say that sometimes it is just a little imbalance in the digestive tract. I do want to give you a heads up that using miralax and benefiber are great tools, just be sure she is drinking LOTS during the day otherwise we found that they only make things worse. I hope this helps!
Good luck!
M.

My daughter did the same thing to the point she got serious bladder infections as a result. I know this sounds wierd, but a full colon can put pressure on the bladder and keep it from emptying fully. The urologist said it is very common. He recommended everything you are doing, (he did say benefiber powder in juice), but also recommended a mineral oil milk shake 2 times a week. Just make/buy a milkshake and add a tablespoon or 2 of mineral oil. It works to "grease" the works so to speak. He said she couldn't help but go if we do all of this. He was right and she stopped holding it in after about a month.
