2 Miscarriages in a Row

I really don't have a specific question to ask. I guess I am looking some success stories and encouragement.

My husband and I decided to start trying for another child in Feb. We got pregnant in March and at 5 weeks I miscarried. The Dr said it was a chemical pregnancy. Then we got pregnant again in May and I had to have a D&C at 9 weeks on Wed. The baby's heart was beating at 7 weeks on the sono but when we did another sono at 9 weeks there was no heart activity. I had weird hormone levels the whole time. My HCG levels were on the low side but rising. My progesterone started off low but he started supplementing me with Prometrium and brought them up to the right level.

I know so many of you have gone through this. I feel cheated, pissed off, sad, like I'm defective, etc. The only thing I can think of is getting pregnant again and afraid that I won't be able to have a full term pregnancy after 2 miscarriages. We are going to wait like the Dr suggested though. The Dr doesn't seem too concerned since I already have a child.

My mind is in overdrive thinking about all the what ifs...did I exercise too hard, should they have put me on the prometrium sooner, should I have waited to have another sono before allowing the d&c, etc.

What can I do next?

I had an ectopic pregnancy and after that, it took us another year to concieve baby #2. She is happy and healthy, but she is a miracle.
I just found out that I have had super low progesterone levels for years. It can really affect your chances of concieving and holding a pregnancy.
Keep a check on your progesterone levels. Good luck sweetie! I know it's hard. Try to keep your chin up. I'm so sorry for your loses.
I'll be praying for you, H..

I don't have any answers for you, nor do I really have a "success" story. But I wanted to let you know that I know what you are going through. I have 2 kids who I had no problems conceiving or in pregnancy. Last year, we decided to go for #3. I found out I was pregnant last July. At a 9 week sonogram, we found no heartbeat or anything. I had a D&C at 10 weeks last August. We waited 3 months as suggested and got pregnant right away in December. I lost the baby naturally at 5 weeks. The doctor suspected that one was a chemical pregnancy. We tried again right away and got pregnant the second month of trying in February. The doctor monitored my hormone levels and the HCG was rising slowly and the progesterone was rising with prometrium. After many sonograms and blood tests, we found it to be a failed pregnancy as well. I don't remember all the details as it's all kind of a blur. I ended up taking cytotech at 8 weeks to induce my body to miscarry. That was in March. Actually on the due date I should have had the first baby I lost. I am now out of the 3rd month of waiting, and we can't decide if we want to go on to try again. I just don't know I have it in me to lose another one. I went through a battery of tests after the 3rd one and every test came back fine. There was no medical reason they could find as to why I miscarried those 3 times. He did assure me there was nothing I did to make it happen. In a healthy pregnancy, exercising or any normal activity will not cause a miscarriage. They also told me that the prometrium will not prevent a miscarriage that is going to happen anyway. I'm sorry I don't have any answers for you, but I am here to talk if you need to. I sometimes feel that no one around me knows how this feels. Best of luck to you! And remember, not just your body needs healing. That happens quickly. It's the emotional scars that will take the longest to heal!

I wanted to give you a success story.
I had an early miscarriage/chemical pregnancy at about 4 weeks last summer. We weren't trying at the time, but it was still a sad loss. In January, we started trying again. In April, I discovered I was pregnant and my doctor saw me at 4.5 weeks. She did blood work. My hcg was 91 and my progesterone was 13.3. She did blood work 48 hours later to check to see if the levels had risen. HCG should double or triple in 48 hours and progesterone should steadily increase in each trimester. My hcg was 313 and my progesterone was 9.4. My progesterone had dropped. She immediately put me on prometrium supplements- 200mg twice daily. We went at 6.5 weeks for an early sonogram. We saw the yolk sac and strong beating heart. Since then the baby has had a strong heartbeat and is growing right on schedule. We had a sonogram at 13 weeks and saw her fingers, toes, heartbeat, head, brain, etc. I am 18 weeks now and doing well. I am actually starting to feel the little movements in there. We go to the dr. in 2 weeks for our 20 week ultrasound and we will find out what we're having.

Also, I have another friend who also had an early miscarriage and is now pregnant again. She too, took prometrium supplements from the beginning and is now 22 weeks and having a little girl.

Maybe suggest to your dr. that you start taking prometrium earlier next time. I took a lot of comfort in my dr. seeing me so early and being so proactive with this pregnancy.

Best of luck to you!

I am sorry for your loss... I too had a miscarriage, and I understand the emotions. I did have a successful pregnancy 3 months later, but I also had complications, and my baby girl was born early and small... scary! I now have 2 daughters, 9 and 7, and they are my world. I'd love to have more kids, but pregancy and delivery are, yes, scary.
What I can tell you is that I know TONS of people who have experienced multiple miscarriages and gone on to have successfuly pregnancies. I always had low hormone levels in my pregnancies too, but I couldn't take the supplements because of horrible side effects. If you can handle them, take them. One of my friends had 3 mc's in a row but now has 2 healthy children. Just hang in there-- nature is a mystery!

I am so sorry for your losses. I know how it hurts and you feel defective. I had an ectopic pregnancy in September 08. This was after 18 months of heavy duty fertility medications and injections. I took time off from the fertility meds and saw an acupuncturist. I also have PCOS. My PCOS was regulated in 2 months and at month 3, I was pregnant. I am currently at 31 weeks with this baby - and everything is going great. If you want more information, e-mail me privately. Even if it doesn't help with the miscarriage, it might help you to relax and maybe that is just what your body needs.

Hi, H.! I wanted to thank you for posting your experience. I recently had my first pregnancy and found out the same way that there was no heartbeat- My first sono at 7 weeks was great and the following visit (weeks later mind you) it had not grown since the last visit. I was devastated and I still have my moments. I don't have much info for the reason I miscarried... I did have the D&C right after I found out and I am looking forward to trying again- hopeful that next time all will go well. I was hoping to hear how you have dealt with the loss- no one close to me has ever had to deal with this. Thanks again for posting and hope you find some comfort with others' experiences.
