Sounds like he has acid reflux, did the Dr mention it? Many babies do and some need meds. Google acid reflux in newborns and see if it sounds like him.
I would try a different bottle type. We too had the Playtex nursers and they made my son very gassy. We switched to Avent bottles and that helped alot. My son was nursed and would be gassy when he ate from the bottle, so we did not realize it at first.
Both of my children were gassy and spit up a lot and didn't tolerate the milk based formulas that well. I switched them both to Enfamil AR after we got home from the hospital and they both did great on it. My daughter is now 3 and has normal eating habits and no allergies. My son just turned 9 months and he too has a normal appetite, sleeps well and through the night, and is much less gassy and hasn't spit up since we switched him to the AR. It's just gentler on their stomachs, and if you register on enfamil.com they will normally send coupons that range between $5 and $7, not too bad when a big can of powdered formula at Walmart runs about $23-25.
Having had two boys on Nutramigen I say 'use it' . Nutramigen is heat treated to break down the molicules fine enough that they do not hurt babies system. This is not the case with lactose free formulas. Also boys under the age of 15 should not have large quantities of soy milk as it can cause other medical problems. Baby will soon take Nutramigen when given nothing else. My first child took almost a week of nothing to realize there was nothing else. I still have my 19mth on the formula now.
If there are any signs of reflux or allergy then you should not mess with a babies system. Sticking to the Nutramigen means that you can then deal with the greater issues of allergy etc without having to second guess along the way.
By using Nutramigen you then also avoid milk in any form, nuts or shellfish.
By doing this you greatly reduce the risk of lifetime allergies. What is a couple of years of sticking to a restricted diet when it can give you more freedoms later.
I have a child who did not get the help early enough and so I have spent ten years struggling with diets to 9 major allergens. He finally has 6 months to eat as he wishes. I cannot tell you how simple my life seems now.
Good luck with your decisions and please ask me anything about allergies and these formulas. If I can help I will.
Note: What cost do you put on your childs health???
I would do some research on the soy formulas. There are studies that have linked it to increased ADD risk... just to let you know :)
The bottle change sounds like a good way to start - if that doesn't help, then move to changing formulas. Some bottles give more air than others, or milk comes too fast, which would cause the spitting up and gassiness.
Try the lacto free, it made for a much happier baby in our house. I'd also try a different bottle. I love Born Free, I used Avent with my first son and I wasn't as happy with those as I am the Born Free.
