Best friend daughter had this and she was born at full term and great weight! Heathly as can be!!! Friend did have to see a high risk OB but that was it, mom and baby perfectly heathly!
Hello ladies,
I am 21 weeks pregnant with my second daughter and i recently had two ultrasounds and they nurse told me that my baby has a two vessel umbilical cord instead of three. I have looked all over online medical sites and asked her a few questions, but I have to wait a few weeks so the actual doctor will make an appointment to do a detail ultrasound in his office. I was just wondering if any moms out there have had any experience with this situation or family or friends. I am very nervous seeing all the complications but the nurse was quick to tell me that many babies are born perfectly fine.

My nephew had a 2 vessel umbillical cord. They diagnosed this around the same time their AFP test came back with an increased risk for birth defects.
My nephew was born at 40 weeks (full term), and has no health issues at all. He is now 6 months old.
My niece had this. She was born on time and perfectly normal. They monitered my SIL very carefully. She is a tad on the small side but my SIL is very petite herself. I also have an online friend who had a daughter with it and she is a healthy happy 3 year old. Try not to worry too much (easy to say, not to do) but likely everything will turn out just fine.
I know how scary this is but, I went through it and my daughter was born (almost 10 pounds) and as healthy and beautiful as can be. She is now 3 1/2 and speaks like a 6 year old and can do kindergarten work. On the plus side you will be monitered closely & have lots of ultrasound pics.
enjoy your pregnancy!!!
I., I don't want to make you any more nervous, so focus on all the other responses with good outcomes, but you have researched and know that there can be serious complications. 23 years ago we lost our little angel to a condition that only 2 vessels in the cord is a symptom. I won't get into all the details, but make sure the doctor does a very thorough ultrasound. You should find out how 'state-of-the-art' your doctor's machine is, and if you need to, go to a hospital or imaging center where they have the very best machine available. You will be in my prayers that the ultrasound will confirm that everything is normal and your baby will be happy and healthy.
I had b/g twins 7 months ago. The day before they were born, a little over 5 weeks early, they found that my son had a 2-vessel cord. The more serious issue that day, however, was that my daughter's umbilical blood flow was reversing, so necessitated delivery via c-section as soon as possible. I went home and got on the internet in between packing for the hospital. While the 2-vessel cord was concerning to me, the reversal of blood flow was life-threatening and scared me more. After my son was born, he had several ultrasounds to check the health of his heart and kidneys. He is perfectly healthy, thank God. So is my daughter, but if we hadn't had the u/s appt. that previous day, we most likely would have lost her.
Many things are possible symptoms or characteristics of certain disorders, but it does not always mean that it's a definite diagnosis. When I was pg with my older daughter, the peri saw white spots on her heart. He said it was calcium and could mean Down's Syndrome. She is fine. Again, there are so many things that can be nothing. It is good to be informed, but not to scare yourself silly unless there is a definite diagnosis of something.
Best wishes for a safe and healthy delivery of your baby.
My niece had a 2 vessel chord and she is a very healthy 1 year old. I was a little bit freaked out when I started researching this abnormality, but it seems that the detailed ultrasound can give you a very clear picture of any of the really scary things that occur with a 2 vessel chord. If the rest of your initial ultrasound looked normal, you are probably in the clear, but get the detailed one anyway. Good luck to you and your daughters!
My very dear friend had this problem. Thank your lucky stars you found out when you did b/c she didn't find out until 34-35 wks & was then in the hospital for the remainder of her pregnancy...
The only major complication was that she had excess fluid build up in her abdomen as she was creating the same amount of amniotic fluid, but it wasn't able to enter the sac at the rate she was creating it. (Does that make sense?) She had to deliver via C-section b/c the DR was concerned about the extra fluid causing problems as the baby tried to come out on her own.
She had a very successful delivery & extremely healthy baby. We just celebrated her 2nd birthday yesterday! =) From my understanding, it only complicated the pregnancy, not the baby. Best of luck to you!!!
Hi,
I was told that my son was a 2-vessel cord baby at the 4 month ultrasound and proceeded to totally friek out after reading all of the medical literature on all of the problems that could signify. It turns out that problems occur if there are genetic predispositins or diseases that occur in the parents' families that could lead to issues with the newborn. As long as you and your husband do not have these genetic issues, then the baby will be fine. I gave birth to a gorgeous little boy who has been healthy, strong and bright since day 1- the two vessel cord was not an issue. Interestingly, my sister was present at the birth, and she said the cord was 'very pretty' :)
I would just recommend that you talk with your doctor to make sure that you get all the information that you need and that you are reassured that you and your new baby will be fine! Congratulations!
