My 2-year old has an itchy scalp. There were red/brown patches with some scaly skin on them. I can't really see them anymore, but he's still scratching. Mostly behind one ear...Thoughts? Home remedies?
Thanks.

What can I do next?

I use some baby oil and I bought some kids conditioning shampoo. I also only wash his hair every other day (unless it really needs it).

Lemon juice. Put it on the scalp during bath-time and the wash it out at the end.

My 4 year old suffers from the occasionaly dry/itchy scalp. She get's the same red, scaly patches that you speak of. I use T-gel shampoo by Neutragena and after several uses it's gone. I only use it when I notice she's itchy. So one bottle goes a long, long way. :)

I've had success with olive oil and baby oil. I warm the oil, let it saturate the scalp for as long as he'll let you, gently massage the scalp with a soft baby brush, and this rinse several times with a mild shampoo (I've switched to organic and it seems to keep the scales away). I'd try a natural remedy and if it doesn't work, go see your ped. good luck!

You can try almond oil, which is rich in Vitamin E and is a anti-inflammatory.
If you are not sure if your son has an allergy to almond make sure you do a check in his arm (little oil) before put it in his scalp.
I also would recommend to change shampoo to a more mild/natural one, to check for sun burns or allergies that may causing this problem.

I would try one of the home remedies mentioned but if it doesnt work you may want to take him in. It could be fungal and that only grows. It can be really hard to get rid of if let go. Hope this helps.

Ha the child been on antibiotics?

tea tree oil is an antifungal, antibacterial, and I use it to stop the itch of bug bites. It has a slight numbing quality to it. You can try that. That would help it if it is a bacterial or fungal issue.

Sometimes skin rashes are due to a food allergy or fungal gut overgrowth due to antibiotics.

I get an itch at the back of my head when I dont wash my hair every day. any perspiration does it. When i was younger i had psoriasis in my hairline and around my ears. I think it was a b vitamin deficiency.

Sometimes skin ailments can be helped with vit B complex (liquid) under the tounge, also essential fatty acids.

Tree Tea Oil as well as Almond Oil are very good for that as the other ladies mentioned. But I think you should take him to see his pediatrician just to ease your mind and know exactly what he has instead of guessing.

Try some dandruff shampoo - wash it in and let it sit a minute or two then rinse out. Use it whenever you wash his hair. It can sit on his ears and neck too.

Occasionally our heads get itchy, especially from all the sun and chlorine. Make sure he's clean when he goes to bed, any lasting sunscreen or chlorine can really dry out his skin. We even used it on our baby's cradle cap and it was gone in a week.

I could suggest rubbing some baby oil on his scalp, leave it on for a while then give him a bath and gently rub hi scalp with a wash cloth. This is what my mother in law did for my daughter when she had bad cradle cap and I thought she was crazy, but it worked! Good luck!
