Any ideas for a fun, safe birthday gathering for our son's 21st birthday? We're planning a backyard cookout.

What can I do next?

Hi S.,

Make a cirlce with chairs for all to sit in. Get a ball of yarn. One person has the ball of yarn and tossess it to whomever he chooses. At that point, they can either tell stories that happened with that person, how much they mean to them, etc. you get the idea. Then that person tosses it on to the next.
This is ALWAYS sooooooo much fun. Sometimes you laugh, cry, hug - but ALL will enjoy this.

Since I am 23 I can kinda relate. Most 21 yr olds wanna drink on this certain birthday but if it's going to be at your home than atleast you can keep it safe. The BBQ sounds great, add some of his/her favorite music and all of their friends and let your child put in some ideas on what they might like to do.Having it at the lake is also an option.

Congratulations! I lived in Japan for several years and they celebrate their kids' 21st birthdays in such a beautiful way. They actually reserve one day out of the year for all those turning 21 and make a huge deal out of it.

I know one thing that 21 year olds enjoy is kareoke. Maybe you could purchase a kareoke kit and let him and his friends sing their hearts out. This is just one idea that hopefully will help. Enjoy celebrating your son turning into an adult. Where does the time go? Mine will be 17 this year. Also, I'm a photographer and will be glad to take some photos of him. My website is uniquemomentsstudio.com, if you're interested. If not, no worries...we'll continue chating about our sons. I'm sure I can use some advice from you as my son gets older. Take care.

If you're already planning a backyard BBQ, make it themed! One thing to focus on is that you want him & his friends to want to stay at your place to drink so they're not on the road later! What about having a Vegas style party? You can rent casino tables & equipment. Here's a link to a map & list of party rental places near you:

Have a friend be a bartender to serve cocktails & then just serve beer the rest of the night. Maybe hire a couple girls to be cocktail servers for the "happy hour". Craigslist.org is a great place to advertise for that. I do wedding flowers & get most of my gigs there! I've been using it for years & had great results. I hope this helps. Good luck! And don't be insulted if he wants to go out with is friends instead of staying home. It's totally a dude thing! Well, I guess a chick thing, too. I was walking out the door of my apartment with friends to go a bar when my parents showed up with an ice cream cake & got mad at me that I was going out! HAHA! The ice cream cake was my mother's favorite, too. Which made things worse! I ended up going out. I hope your son is more receptive to your party plans. Just keep him in the planning part of things so that he doesn't feel *obligated to oblige*.

I'm a big fan of Jazz'd downtown off Broughton street. It's a tappas bar (appetizer sized portions... good food). They usually have live music later at night. Alcohol is served there, but it's a low key environment... not rowdy like Savannah Smiles.
