Choking in the night on vomit means definitely get a second opinion asap!
Do let us know how this ends.
So my 23 month old son has been throwing up almost everynight for about 3 weeks now, no fever or diarrhea. He isn't eating as much as he usually does but is acting quite normal besides the vomiting. I took him to the pedi. 2 times already and both doctors said that they "weren't concerned". I dont know if he has swallowed something that shouldn't have been put in his mouth in the first place and could still be there causing this?? He throws up so random that he will be sleeping at night and i will wake up to him choking in his vomit in the middle of the night! I need some advice asap please!!
Thank you to all the moms and for your advice. I insisted the doctors run some test and the all came back normal and my son is not throwing up anymore so i guess we will never find out but i am happy that he is okay now thank you all for your resonses they were really appreciated : )

2nd opinion & insist on an x-ray or some type of scan. You are the advocate for your child's health & this is obviously NOT normal behavior for any child. More tests & analysis need to be done to determine the reason, regardless if it's an allergy or an object in his stomach or anything like that. Keep pursuing through your medical insurance until you find a doctor that listens to your concerns & takes action, beyond just another routine visit. Good luck!
Go to another doctor, right away.
I agree that you need a second opinion. Our pedi once told us she cared for a child who was starting to develop diabetes, and rather than having the classic symptoms, the child was just vomiting. I'm not suggesting your child has diabetes, just pointing out that children have different symptoms than adults, and you need a pedi that will think outside the box. Vomiting at night during sleep sounds very dangerous. Good luck to you!
Different pediatrician. They should at least be offering you options - like seeing a specialist.
My son did a bunch of vomiting when he was about ten months old, lasted about a month. He wasn't loosing weight and was in good spirits but his pediatrician wasn't about to let it go because he could tell we were worried. Tested his urine to see if he had a bladder infection. Nothing. Tested his blood to see if his white count was high. Nothing. Then, just before we were set to see the specialist, we realized he was allergic to bananas, which we had been feeding him because he was vomiting and they're supposed to be easy on the tummy. Go figure.
Besides going to another doctor asap you can keep a diary of everything that goes into his mouth, then take away one thing at a time and journal all of this. It sounds hard but I did it with my son when he was little because he had food allergies. This might help to determine if he is allergic to something. Does he use a pacifier, and if so could a piece be coming off? I would consider anything at this point. Also you need to be very assertive with the doctors, tell them you aren't leaving until something is done. Tell them you don't want to find him not breathing because of the fact that no one would listen. Yes, it sounds harse but you are paying the doctors for their care for your son. You have gotten some good advise on this site. Please let us know what happens. Good Luck
I would definitely call a different pediatrician and get another opinion. It could be something simple like an undiagnosed GI disorder, or it could be something more serious that requires immediate medical attention.
Be his health advocate and start getting more bold with the physician.
It is possible it's related to a virus that has to run its course, but 3 weeks is a long time. Our son coughs so badly at night, he gags himself. It's really scary.
Good luck - I'd take him to Urgent Care, ER, or to another pediatrician within your health network who can work him in immediately. Don't be afraid to tell them exactly what is going on to get you in sooner.
Take him to a different pediatrician for a second opinion!! that's not normal and ous concern me. I think your concern about him ingesting something bad is totally reasonable too.\. Also, ask about the possibility of strep - in babies, this often manifests with GI symptoms.
Hi S.,
I just saw your post and I'm hoping you have an answer for your son already. If not, I thought I'd share my experience with you.
My son did the same thing starting at about 9 months of age. The vomiting was completely random and he, too, had no fever or diarrhea. If anything he seemed a little constipated. He would have what I called "episodes" of being in unrelenting pain and would then vomit. He was lethargic and would sleep after these episodes for a good 2-3 hours. He would wake up as if nothing happened.
I knew something was wrong but no phycision could tell me the problem. It wasn't until our MD ordered an ultrasound that we learned he had an intestinal blockage, called intassusception. It's most common in boys ages 3 months to 3 years of age and can be associated with bilious like vomiting (Jacob's looked like curdled milk - sorry to be sodescriptive). It can also be associated with bloody stools.
I don't know if any of this sounds familiar to what your son is going through but I thought I'd mention it. I hope things work out. There's nothing worse than watching your littl eone go through a rough time. Good luck!
Every night for three weeks is not normal. I would keep going to the doctor. On Mystery Diagnosis there was a child who threw up everyday and it was caused by his stomach being in his chest due to a hernia. While I am not saying your child has this, it was the determination of the parents constantly returning to the doctors that finally brought about a diagnosis and solution.
He may be allergic to something he is eating or drinking. You have to make sure he gets enough nutrition to replace what is missing. If you need some ideas on healthy snacks let me know and I will show you.
Have a great day.

Perhaps it's food allergies. Start keeping a log of the last thing he ate when he vomits, you may start to see a pattern. Dairy allergy?? Egg allergy?? etc. Ask for a referral to an allergist. Food Allergy and Anaphylactic Network (FAAN) www.foodallergy.org is also a great resourse. If he does have food allergies there is a group in Redwood City. www.sffoodallergy.org where you can find great support and info.
First I would make sure he is getting a lot of fluids. Pedilight is a good fluid replacement. He also needs calories so maybe give him an increase in fluids that are high in calories, pedisure is a good drink and maybe even formula till he is over this. I would have him sleep in the room with me until this is resolved so if he is choking you can help him. Does he have a reflux problem. that is fairly common. those kids have to keep their heads up for about 2 hours after they eat or drink. What does the dr. think it is? did he give you any suggestions? if it keeps up I would take him back to the dr.
good luck

It could be a variety of things and it sounds like you need an answer soon if he is choking in his sleep from vomit. How scary!
My son did this and he has something called cyclical vomiting or abdominal migraines. You might want to google it.
Let us know what you find out.
That just doesn't sound right. I would call an advice nurse at Children's Hospital and see what they suggest.
have you considered going gluten free? I just did it with my daughter, and the results are amazing. It can't hurt to try it.
Good Luck, J.
