24/7 Cooking / Eating

Just wanted to get your feedback. Do you guys ever just get tired of cooking and/or going out to eat...I know that sounds crazy for some, but I calculated this - 3 to 4 meals per day (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack) and 7 days a week ...52weeks, that's like 1456 meals for the year and some. It might be because I don't like the chore of cooking (even though I am a great cook)...but it gets old after a while, so I am just throwing it out there to see if anyone feels the same way or is it just me!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

You guys are the best. Now I don't feel so alone. As you have said in some way, it's the planning that makes it monotonous...what do we eat tonight...and with a family always hungry, you just want to say to yourself "Can't you guys just skip a meal"....

If I wasn't into healthy foods and prefer home cooked meals, it probably would make my life easier, because there's lots of junk food to go around for little or nothing.

Thank you all for hearing my "frustration". Who ever thought something so vital to us living could get so boring at times.

I absolutely cannot stand dinner - planning it, shopping for it, cooking it, and even eating it. By the time I get to that point, I don't want it, seriously. I would gladly make breakfast and lunch daily, yearly, but dinner is a whole other beast. I often say that if I had extra money, I'd hire a meal planner/cook. Even someone to plan what dinners we will eat every week would make me happier than I can explain! So no, you are not the only one... seems like a TON of time we spend for not even 10 minutes of eating!!!!

I like cooking, but agree, when you have a family it is relentless. When you are single, you can open a can of soup and eat it with toast when you just can't be bothered. But you don't get breaks as often with a family. Yes, I get tired of it too. To boot, if you are into healthy eating then its double duty, because fresh produce requires more shopping, rinsing, chopping....

I periodically go on strike. At least once or twice a year for a couple weeks.

For a couple weeks a year it's sammies, cereal, frozen food, premade things from the store (even a premade sammie when I've really got the bit between my teeth).

I consider it vacation, and I have so much more TIME when I do this. I'm generally cooking 3-4 hours a day. Nixing the cooking comes as a WELL NEEDED BREAK.

And then I start craving sauces, or chimichurri steak (aka any meal I can cook at home for 1/10th the cost of buying it) or an all day soup... and I'm back.

But I really do go on strike. Not in an angry way. I'm just "done" for awhile!

It may help to have some go-to, easy meals that you can get help with. For example, if we stare into the fridge and nothing grabs us or we are pressed for time, there's always a pizza, salad and/or fruit. DD and I often have soup for lunch, and I'm thinking I might do spaghetti in a bit.

Going out depends on why, where, and with who. If we take the whole gang, it's very costly. Even if it's just me and DD, she can be very slow. I try not to make a habit of eating out for everyday.

As the kids get older, include them. The older kids can make a pizza as well as I can. DD can get me a bowl for her cereal and she's only 3. My SIL used to leave plastic bowls and spoons down low, put cereal in those tuperware containers with a small flip lid, and buy half gallons of milk. The kids could make their own breakfast. We also do things like make blueberry muffins that people eat for breakfast for several days.

Doesn't anyone in your family ever help you? If you are a great cook, you should be more appreciated.

I love cooking, but there are times when I am working long hours and eating out or bringing in food is easier.

Just not enough time for the whole process, shopping, cooking and cleaning up.

There are also some pretty amazing places to eat in town and sometimes it is nice to sit and be served.

Planning meals and snacks is my downfall. I'm not a terrible cook, but i absolutely hate to do it, and for some reason, I can't plan meals well. I would be one happy mama if I never had to worry about food again- it just appeared in my pantry and fridge, and I had the right ingredients for the meal. I'm not picky about what I eat either, I just don't want to do the thinking about it! Glad to know I'm not alone!

I get tired of cooking and I get tired of eating. If I could just take a pill instead of eating a meal, I would do that about half the time. Really. But my metabolism is such that I need to eat something every few hours. Bummer.

You are funny! I like to eat, so of course I've got to cook. Going out is even better. It's the part about having a family that makes it harder or easier. Do they ever help you in the kitchen. Do they provide input on meal planning or suggestions on spur of the moment cooking? Dirty dishes is what I dislike and I'm not much of a planner, so the planning part too. But over the years I'd like to think I'm getting a little better. We recently purchased our first home and I find I'm much more motivated to keep the kitchen clean...and thus it's easier to do the cooking in a clean kitchen. Anyway, that's my two cents. Have a great day and a great next meal!

I don't mind cooking...but I get sick of trying to think of meals. If someone would just plan my meals out for me I'd be happy to cook them.

I really try to make a lot of meals that'll have leftovers so my cooking time is halved for the week. That helps a lot.

I've pretty much given up on breakfast during the week. My girls are 7 and 9...they fully know where they can get some cereal or a granola bar or make some toast. If they ask I'll make eggs or a breakfast sandwich, but I rarely offer just because.

I love it when my girls decide to buy school lunch...I despise packing 2 snacks and 2 lunches. That's the WORST part of the entire school year!

You actually "cook" 3-4 meals a day? I am a great cook too but probably only cook my self and my family 1-2 meals a day. I eat cereal in the morning, a sandwich for lunch, and cook dinner, usually for 2 days at a time. You are wearing yourself down, girl! And I never get tired of going otu to eat.

I am a good cook, but I have to admit I don't like it. Thinking of things to cook is harder for me than actually just cooking something.
I enjoy cooking on weekends, but during the week, forget it. I'm a single working mother and I was smart, I taught my son how to cook. He's 16, loves cooking, and as long as I have things in the house, he'll get dinner started before I get home from work. That's not every night, but if he knows I've had a rough day, he'll cook. The kid can make ANYTHING.
I love going out to eat, but it gets expensive so we don't do it that often.
When I was married, I cooked during the week and my husband did all the cooking on the weekends. It worked out really well. But still, planning the meals felt like torture to me.
It does get monotonous.

Just my opinion.

I don't like to cook and I'm not good at it. I basically cook Mon, Tues and Wed and make extra to have as leftovers on Thurs. On Friday we have pizza and salad. Depending on what we are doing Sat and Sun we just wing it. So no, you are not alone. =)
