Hi Mom's I need your help! I am a first time single mom to a 24 month old little girl. Last night she woke up with a high fever. I gave her motrin and this morning took her to the doctor, her regular doctor is on vacation. They checked and her ears and throat were find. I mentioned to the doctor I noticed that her pee smelled skunk like. Her urine was tested and it can back positive, but positive for??? They said they would send the urine to the lab and get back to me by friday. In the mean time they gave me some medicine for her. Has anyone else gone thew this with there little ones.
My daughter is extremely active and all she has been doing is just laying on the couch, that is not like her. I still haven't been able to get the fever down, I have given her motrin and also hours later tylenol.
Does anyone know what I can do to help her feel better or get the fever down, or what I can give her to eat. She says she is hungry and when I give her something she likes she takes one bite and says "No want it" If anyone can help please let me know. I would really appericate it. I am just so sad that my Destiny is not feeling well.

What can I do next?

Call her Doctor, as Julia M. & Deanna said. They offered good tips.

You NEED to know all details, and WHAT is she tested positive for????

ALSO, she is still running a fever... tell them this.

There are different approaches to fever, depending on the age of the child, and how high the fever is.
1) Tylenol/Motrin does not "cure" the illness...it just brings down the fever if it is dangerously high, and helps the child to feel better.
2) letting the fever run it's course and letting it "burn itself out." A fever is the body's way of fighting back an infection...some parents, do not give Tylenol/Motrin, and let the fever burn out on its own. BUT.... you must be careful.. you MUST monitor her throughout the day and night-time, taking her temperature every 1-2 hours or so. IF the fever is over 101.5 or higher, you must tell your Doctor. I would ask them at WHAT TEMPERATURE should you watch out for, and/or take her into the ER.

For non-medicine methods of bringing a fever down:
1) give her a tepid bath... luke-warm...to cool.
2) give her iced-water.
3) KEEP her HYDRATED... fever dehydrates children. You do NOT want her to get dehydrated...lethargy is one symptom of dehydration.
4) Put an ice-pack on her forehead, and under her armpits.
5) Do not bundle her up, unless she is getting the "chills" as a result of her fever and illness.

MONITOR her fever carefully... yes, they will not feel like eating when they are sick. But, be SURE to keep giving her liquids and keep her hydrated. This is very important, especially if she has a urinary infection.

Sleep and rest, is a body's way of "healing" and it IS a good thing she is wanting to rest. Let her.

TAKE her back into the Doctor or ER, if you are not satisfied, AND if she gets other symptoms or the fever escalates.

ALSO, what kind of medicine did the Pediatrician give her? If it's an antibiotic, follow the instructions carefully. Also, an antibiotic will usually start helping the child to feel better in no time.

Take care, hope this helps,
Susan

Hi J.:
I'm sorry to hear your darlin girl is not feeling well. You know...I think us mothers can handle just about anything, with the exception of seeing our children sick,or hurting. It just pulls at your heart strings. You feel so helpless sometimes. You sound like a very compassionate, concerned mommy and I'll tell you what i'd do,if it were me. I'd call the Doctors office, and ask to speak to his nurse.I'd explain to her that you recently took your daughter to DR and he mentioned her urine was positive. Tell her you regret not asking while you were there, but you have been concerned ever since, and want to know what the doctor meant. He said he was sending it to the lab. If he already knows its positive, why the need for a lab? He must have an idea, as to what is making her feel ill. I'm guessing he believes it to be a bladder infection. Thats a guess. You can find out from the nurse, what he thinks, and what you could be doing for your daughter,to help, until the test comes back from the lab to clarify. Deluted cranberry juice would be great. That purifies, and flushes out infection in the bladder. I'd give her that, till friday, and see if she improves. The nurse,or Dr. should give you some reasurance,so you don't have to fret to much, till the end of the week. You payed for that Dr to care for your daughter, and to get some answers. Please don't think twice about calling. I wish you and your sweet girl the best.

Okay, call the doctor's office and demand to know exaclty what her urine tested positive for...tell them your daughter is still running a fever, and needs immediate care. This cannot wait until Friday...be firm, but remain in control, they will help that's what they are there for...If you know what you're dealing with you can better come up with a game plan of how to treat her. If you need to take her to your local Urgent Care.

You're doing a great job!! The motrin is good, and so in the tylenol...start with hydration, I use Pedialyte for hydration and Pediasure for when my son refuses to eat...he thinks it's chocolate milk and it has great calorie count. Popsicles are great, and pedialyte actually make some that aren't bad...I use them when I'm sick too!! :)

My son loves to sit in a coolish bath when he doesn't feel good, or wash clothes on the forehead...sometimes he chews on them, and it's adorable. Ice chips, made from juice are awesome. Fruit strips, slices, yogurt, pudding...stuff that's easy to swallow.

It's so hard to take care of a sicky, when you don't really know what's wrong or how to attack it. If she has a urinary tract infection, she just needs to flush out her system and you might want to give her juices that are mixed with cranberry juice or just straight cranberry...my son's loved cran-grape and stuff like that from ocean spray, and you can even get market brand one's that are just as good.

I'm a single Mama, so I know you're pacing around and trying to do the best you can!! Don't worry, it'll be okay. Just do what you can, and it will work out. Make sure your little girl is comfy and happy, and the rest will come.

When they said "Positive" it means there was bacteria in the urine (a urinary tract infection). It takes 3-4 days to culture exactly what kind of bacteria which is why they told you they woul give you the results Friday. I'm sure the medicine they gave her is a broad-spectrum antibiotic which will likely treat any of the many bacterial infections that could be in her urine. Keep giving her the meds as directed. If she like cranberry juice that will help the urinary tract too. Good luck and be strong...sick kiddos are the hardest thing in the world for us Mommies.

All wonderful advice, I went thru this with my daughter at about the same age. Urinary tract infection! I had never seen my baby that sick before and nothing brought down the fever! We did all the cranberry juices - she seemed to like the white cranberry the best, and took all the meds. She did start to feel better after about 2-3 days. Call and let the docotr know that she is still running a fever and what else can you do for her, they need to know that she is still with fever! Dont let this go too far or the simple UTI can lead to something worse, like into the kidneys! Be firm with the doctor and ask all the questins you want, and keep asking until they have given you answers that you understand, and if you dont understand them ask again! My daughter had several KIDNEY infections from UTI because I did not catch them soon enough, she has since outgrown most of this, she is nine now. Good luck, call the doc again!

I'd say keep calling the doctor / nurse and let them know about the fever. Cool baths and cool clothes over her body could help with the fever for a little bit to make her comfortable for a while. But, in time, it will come back again. Like another mommy said, BE FIRM.
In regards to eating, unsalted cracker and warm sprite or 7 up. Just sips of the warm sprite or 7 up will help her to not get dehydrated. All the best.
