I'm nursing but occasionally (at least 1 day a week) our baby takes my milk in a bottle. She had some trouble but today was very fussy and apparently screamed and screamed until she fell asleep and i got home and fed her. I use the silocone playtex nipples, slow. Anyone have any suggestions? does it make a dif to use the other kind (the yellowy brown ones) or dif brands? She's also been a little fussy when i feed her. Sometimes in the begining so its not gas...

What can I do next?

Hi S.,
We went through a similar issue with my son when he was about 3 months old (now almost 2). I was nursing and he was taking a bottle about once a week and then BAM . . .out of nowhere, he refused the bottle.

What we found is to get a blanket or lovey that you sleep with for a couple of days, get your scent on it (I even slept with it between my breasts, as odd as that may sound). And then my mom or my husband (whoever was going to be feeding him the bottle), took that blanket/lovey and held it near the baby's face so he could "smell" me. It worked like a charm.

I know how frustrating it can be. I hope this helps!

Good Luck!
B.

Whenever I had a relative give my daughter a bottle, they had to hold her facing out--not in the nursing position. For some reason, she took bottles fine at daycare in the regular nursing position, but not from my dh or grandma. Keep offering as you have and try having the caregiver hold her facing out and see if that helps.

Hi, I wish I could help, but my 5 1/2 month has refused a bottle for about 2 months now also. She would get pumped milk in a bottle about 2 times/week. One day she just stopped. She screams and can't calm down if you try to give her a bottle. I can't leave the house alone for more than 2 hours. I'm going a little stircrazy here! I've tried switching nipples, I use the same as you, but nothing. My hubby is going to try again tonight, but I'm sure she will deny the bottle. We keep trying it, so far no luck. If you find anything that works, please let me know. Best of luck to you.

The yellowy brown ones, as you say, are latex. I have found with my breastfed babies that they like the latex better...I think it is because they stretch more like a mom's nipple, where as the sillicone holds it's own shape...also the sillicone is kind of slick and the latex is more "grippy" for lack of a better word. If you do try them, make sure you get the natural latch ones, not the old "square" shaped ones...those are kind of weird and neither of my babies would have anything to do with them.

Make sure you squeeze all the air out of the liner before feeding. Also it was suggested to me when I was having trouble with latch to feed the baby from a bottle more like they would nurse...ie...make sure they get a wide latch....if they grab onto the nipple shallowly take your finger and kind of flip their lip up so they are spreading their lips as far as possible and really grabbing onto the nipple like they would do when they are nursing. Also hold the baby more upright when they are taking a bottle so that it takes a little more work to get the milk out...this is also more similar to nursing.

I have been curious myself about those Adiri nursers....they really look like the shape of a breast, but they are expensive and I have not tried them myself. I have always had the best luck with the playtex bottles with the latex nipples. Any brand you try, make sure you get the widest version of the bottle possible (I know some of them have a regular and a wide version) and try latex when you have the option. I know alot of people swear by Avent bottles but my babies have not liked them and the nipples are SUPER hard....no stretch to them like a mother would have. Although they have a nice wide shape, that's as far as I would go saying they are like breastfeeding, and there are lost of other brands out there that have that similarity and others besides that as well.
