I had an emergency c-section the first time and had an epidural while I was still in labor. I know it hurt, but I honestly can't tell you what the pain was like thanks to those wonderful hormones that make you forget all that.
Then, my second was delivered via scheduled c-section. I had a spinal block, but I think they injected lidocaine into my spine beforehand to help ease the pain. Then once the spinal block was injected, I admit it did hurt a bit (my nerves went weird and I felt something like electric sparks down one leg for a few seconds) but it only lasted about 10 seconds before my lower half went completely numb and then I just got to lay down and enjoy the freakiness of anesthesia ;)
Seriously, the end result is so worth the little bit of discomfort that you feel in the beginning. You'll remember it hurt, but you won't remember how much. That's the beauty of it all. Don't worry, it's so much easier the second time.
Oh, and I just read a few other responses - first, like one mom said, be forewarned that your husband won't be allowed in the room when you get the block. That really surprised and upset me, and although my doctor's had was a good substitute to hold, I really didn't feel better until my husband was allowed in. I think if I had not have been such a surprise, I would have done better.
And for the moms that said they had epidurals for their c-sections, I wonder if that's inaccurate? An epidural stops the pain of contractions, but a spinal block makes you completely numb and even paralyzed until it wears off. An epidural will not be enough to get you through a c-section. If you were already in labor and you already had had an epidural, they would just administer the spinal block medication through the same tubes without the need for an additional shot. But you can still feel the touching sensation on your skin with an epidural. There is no way a doctor could cut you open to take out a baby. Yikes! No one said I needed to lay down after the spinal block, either. Minutes after our daughter was born, I was sitting up in the bed, nursing her. No headache either, and no problem at all!
Good luck and congratulations!
