2Year Old with MAJOR Constipation-help!

My 2 year old hasn't had a BM in 5 days. He is acting normal, playing, no fever or pain, but is vomiting at night in bed. He has been to the doctor and she seems to think it will just work its way out. He did have an xray to make sure nothing else is blocking the way and it showed that he is literally full of poop.

Does anyone have any advice on how to get him to go? We have tried suppositories and tons of fruit and also prune juice.
Please help!
Thanks!

I have been dealing with months of this from my one year old. I used to give him miralax which is over the counter. I worked well for awhile then we finally had to go to a GI Dr. He gave him enulose which is a stool softner. It is a sugar that the body does not absorb, just passes through. It works great! My son is also given little tummies laxative (0.5mL) every night to help him go. You should try the miralaz first-1TBs to start. If that does not help you can increase the dose little at a time. If it still doesn't help, add the laxative. The laxative and stool softner together should work. I am giving you advice on what my son's pediatric GI Dr. did for him. Let me know. Good luck.

If he isn't potty trained give him some quite time. NO APPLE JUICE it is constipating. A warm bath sometimes works. When my daughter was 3 the doctor had to remove the impaction just inside her rectum to get it flowing.

i'm surprised the suppositories didn't work. we had to use those with my daughter when she was a young 3 yr old. and as hard as she tried, she couldn't hold it in any longer. and she didn't like it one bit. so whenever she tried to stop herself we'd ask if she wanted more "poopy medicine" and that was all we needed to say. sometimes it takes more than once for it work but it's just mineral oil, so you can't "over medicate."

We have used Miralax and mineral oil. My 5 yr old will actually take a teaspoon of mineral oil with no problem.

I would think after 5 days, the mineral oil would be the best thing to get it out fast.

I always have to check with my daughter to make sure she goes on a regular basis. I recently bought some Benefiber to start using in her food/drink on a regular basis.

The longer you wait for it to come out, the harder it will be on them, and they will be scared to go poopy the next time and will hold it again.

I agree with changing doctors.

Dark Karo syrup helps my little one. I mix it in her milk ( a table spoon or so) and with in an hour or less of having the cup she'll have a dirty diaper for me.

Good luck!

Kayro syrup has always worked for us too. A small amount in some juice.

Hi, while none of my children have experienced this, I have a friend who 2 out of 3 children have had major constipaton problems for 3 years. Try a probiotic like acidophilus. You can get it in chewable form for childre or get the powder capsules and sprinkle it on their food, there is no taste. Flax seed oil also helps. Both can be found at Whole Foods or Organica. They have the best kinds and most natural so they actually get the benefits of it. The acidophilus can be given as much as need, it's just good bacteria. Hope this helps.

Hi D. -
My daughter also had this from pretty much age 2-3. Her doctor told me to give her mineral oil twice a day, and surprisingly, she took it with no problem...and it worked wonders. Good Luck!

Hi D.,

We have had issues with all 3 of my kids and mineral oil always seemed to work. It lubes them up so they really can't hold it in. Of course my kids are weird and didn't have a problem taking it. I also mixed it into juice sometimes when I didn't want my son to know he was having it, he called it poop medicine. But I didn't want him to rely on it & only go if he had it. We also used prune juice.

Good luck

Hi D.,
You mentioned all the right stuff except water & fiber. (Although, I'm surprised the prune juice didn't work.) Try giving him water consistently in his sippy cup so that he'll drink it often throughout the day. Also, what about some fiber crackers? I use Fiberwise Bars from Melaleuca. They are great and my daughter thinks they are regular snacks. Have you ever shopped at Melaleuca? Let me know if you'd like to. They pay all customers when they refer other customers.

Go to Whole Foods and get Flax Seed Oil. Start with a few drops or you will have an explosion. If the problem continues then give a few drops of oil daily. It will CLEAN anyone out and it's natural.

This was both of my girls from the time they were born. Up until the age of two we used fletcher for childern or kyro we had to add it to two bottles a day then sippy cups as time when on. This was recommened by our doctor. I honestly can not believe that your doctor said that it would work itself out. Being constipated like that can lead to a hernia. I have also heard that minerail oil helps alot. I look up a web site for you and it gives some great advice. I honestly would rethink who you use for a doctor. Here is the web site and hope your little one gets to feeling better soon!

I also wanted to add that my daughters did the water thing, fruit and the purn juice drinking and it also did not work for her. I hate when people say give them more water sometimes it just does not work. Also my step dad uses flax seed but I never tried it with my daughter. It is natural and I am sure it would work great.

My little guy has had the same problem......bleeding and everything! I think we have it under control.....we have used Miralax in the past, it takes a couple of doses to work. Water actually worked the best. We now make sure he drinks plenty of water and he really hasn't had any problems.

Unfortunately this goes beyond our expertise and falls into the hands of your pediatrician. There are certain expectorants that they can prescribe, but it has to be under their care since children dehydrate so quickly. Yes, fruit and vegetables are preventative, but your treating the situation after the fact. Make sure to cut down his dairy intake temporarily because dairy is a huge constipate. That will only add fuel to the fire. Their are Vitamin D, Calcium gummy bear supplements that you can substitute with right now. When all is said and done keep him on high fiber foods. Constipation is mostly caused by what we eat or medical difficulties. I assume he is healthy so it is most likely his diet.
