2Yo Picking Nose and Eating It!

So disgusting!! I have tried telling her it's nasty, to stop, it will give her worms, etc. She doesn't care. In fact she does it more when I try to stop her. Any ideas on how to get a headstrong and independent 2yo to stop picking and eating?
I'm losing my appetite as I write this....
ETA: I was doing some online research on this topic, and actually found that some research has shown it's good for kids to eat their boogers. Helps build up resistance to certain bacterias that the snotty booger catches in the nose. (I guess it's cheaper than a doctor's visit).

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

This made me laugh! And I thought worms were scary enough to get her to quit. LOL

worms?

Mama duck - you can't get pinworms from mucus. You can get it from dirty fingers, but research it -- it is an old wives' tale that the two are related. Lots of kids pick their noses and lots of kids get pinworms, but they are coincidental, not causal.

You write your post as if a toddler picking her nose is some huge shocking notion and will harm your child irreparably. I'm kind of laughing a bit at how OMG SERIOUS!!!!!1111!! you are about it when she's only two years old.

She's not going to get worms, honey. As gross as it is, it really won't harm her. Yes it's a habit you want to break BUT when she does do it it's actually helping to strengthen her immune system.

She's much more likely to get worms from eating sand at the playground.

EDIT: Not to mention the fact that the bigger deal you make out of it, the more she's going to do it just because she's getting a reaction out of you... and because she's going to prove to you she can do it no matter what you say.

"Pick" your battles. This is not one of them.

And I'm with Veronica .... worms?! It's just her own dried mucus, for crying out loud. Will not cause any harm. Don't freak her out.

I'm not sure if you're a first time mom, but the general consesus is that the bigger a deal you make about it, the more your child will do it. Offer her a tissue when you see you her do it, and move on. The phase will pass a lot quicker if you don't give it any attention.

2 year old kids are gross, and it will take them a while before they actually care about their hygeine. My kid is 6 and still tries to skip wiping and washing and still ocassionally tries to eat a booger or put her hands in her mouth. You can either be paranoid about it all or let them live life and be kids. I would loosen up a bit if I were you.

I read a study that said eating boogers was beneficial to the immune system. I wouldn't make an issue out of it.

I hate that! My ex husband did it as a grown man, one of the many reasons he became an ex. I'd guess this is mostly a phase and it's probably very important on how you handle it so it doesnt turn into a lifetime habit. My kids never ate their boogers. Thank God.
I used to call my husband on it all the time, he learned to to it discreetly thinking I wouldnt see him but I still did. Makes me gag to think about it still!
I'd definitely talk about it to as many people as you can so you can get a good idea on what to do. I had a friend that ate her scabs even when she was grown up and I know it has to be something to do with how it was treated as a child-- I'm still a nailbiter, so I feel there was a parent "fail" when it comes to that too.

So funny.
My daughter never did that.
But my son did.... when he was a Toddler.
Oh well.
It wasn't a big deal to me.
I knew he wouldn't do that in school.
And he doesn't.
What a relief!

Not much fun to watch. Well, I take that back – it can be really funny to watch if your gag reflex is strong enough (did you ever see another driver at a stoplight do this?).

But not harmful, healthwise. Dirty fingers up the nose are probably way more hazardous than putting dried mucus from nose to mouth. That same mucus also drains down the back of the throat, so whatever germs it's got are already home.

If you find the cure, let me know. I'd love to try it on my 11 year old who also thinks that toe nails are snacks. Eeeeewwww.... But hey, he never ever gets sick.

I picked/ate my boogers until I was a teenager, but I never got worms, and I never did it where anyone could see me doing it. I got over it, as I did with most of my oral or sensory fixations.
