Hi everyone
My 2yr son started going to preschool since 2 weeks. Suddenly 3rd week he got sick. He is suffering from very bad cough, fever and running nose. It will be really great if any one help me in suggesting home remedies or medicine which will help my son to relief from cough as there is no medicine in counter for 2yr kids.

Thanks in advance.

Hi H.,

With my son, I have used a cool mist humidifier and PediaCare Gentle Vapors. This will help his cough and runny nose. You can also give him either Tylenol or Motrin for the fever. If he's not better in a couple of days, I would be calling the doctor. I hope that this helps!

Honey is great for coughs. I give my kids some warm chamomeille peppermint tea w/ honey when they are sick, a humidifier, vicks, motrin for the fever if its very high or your child is uncomfortable, saline spray for a congested nose, benedryl (ask your pediatrician what you should use for a dose), hylands (i think) makes a natural honey based cough syrup is safe for small children.

Sprouts has this stuff called Umcka CoodCare by Nature's Way and it is for ages 2 and up. The same thing happened to my son when he started preschool a month ago and I gave him this which I think really helped. I am sure Whole Foods will have it as well. Also, I think you can give Children's Advil for fever reduction.

Sounds like croup (esp if the cough is barky). My daughter used to get it around age 2 almost every time she got a cold. The best thing you can do is a steamy bathroom since evenings are by no means cool yet here in AZ. It will take a little bit for the cough to ease and it may take 2-3 treatments per night to begin with, but it eases the cough and allows your child to sleep. The virus, if it is croup, will go away in about a week but you should really take your child to the doctor to be sure it isn't more serious. Otherwise Tylenol for a mild fever, Motrin (with a little something to eat) for one that's a bit worrisome.

Get the Vicks vaporizers, they are great. Wal-Mart and Target have them. Also put Vicks on his chest and feet with socks on. It sounds strange, but it works.

Sitting in the bathroom with the door closed and the shower running for steam can help a lot. A 1/2 teaspoon of honey can help soothe his cough.
Also, if he is coughing at night, put Vick's VapoRub on the bottoms of his feet, then put socks on him before bed. Don't know why but this does seem to help.
You can give him children's Motrin or Tylenol for the fever.

My son take benedryl or an antihistamine for the runny nose and ibuprofen for the cough and it works great for him. Also, a saline nose spray and humidifier works too.

I have found honey to be a great cough suppressant. I give my son a teaspoon - or more if he seems to need it. I hope your son feels better soon!

You have great responses so far, I just want to add one thing about the honey. Our Kaiser pediatrition told us a month ago that honey has been found to reduce the cough safely in little ones and honey has great healing powers. She recommended a teaspon of honey mixed with water or even a little apple juice and have them drink it about 30 minutes before bed. And to make sure to brush their teeth afterward.

i have to wait it out with mine but if it is a dry cough, a humidifier works and for a mucus cough a nebulizer helps* if you can have it pointed right at their nose and mouth while they sleep its better. they have a mouth peice for that. good luck. i know how you feel!
